Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus ansorgii was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1906 under the original combination Varicorhinus ansorgii, based on material from the junction of the Cambo and Kwango rivers near Fort Don Carlos in the Loanda District of Angola. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Labeobarbus ansorgii (Boulenger, 1906), the parenthetical authority marking the subsequent generic reassignment. FishBase also records the species under this placement.
The genus Labeobarbus groups the large African barbs — the yellowfish and related forms — that were historically scattered across Barbus, Varicorhinus and other catch-all genera. Labeobarbus ansorgii is thus part of a broader rationalisation of African cyprinid taxonomy rather than a recent molecular split. The species epithet honours the collector William John Ansorge, a British naturalist active in Angola and West Africa in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who gathered numerous type specimens for the British Museum.
No subspecies are currently recognised, and no widely used common name has been established in English. The species is sparsely represented in the literature and has received limited systematic attention since its original description.
Morphology
FishBase gives a maximum total length of 12 in for Labeobarbus ansorgii, placing it among the larger African riverine barbs rather than the small-bodied schooling forms typical of the aquarium trade. The general body plan is that of a large, deep-bodied cyprinid with the subterminal to inferior mouth, robust lips and prominent snout characteristic of Labeobarbus, adapted for working the benthopelagic zone over heterogeneous river substrates.
No detailed morphometric description is available in widely accessible literature beyond the original Boulenger account. Specific fin-ray counts, scale formulae and colouration have not been recorded in secondary sources reviewed here. Given the species' rarity in collections and the limited ichthyological survey work in the Kwango basin, its external appearance is best known from the type material. Species-level dimorphism data are not documented.
Habitat
Labeobarbus ansorgii is native to the Kwango River (also spelt Cuango) within the Kasai drainage of the middle Congo basin, with the type locality at the confluence of the Cambo and Kwango rivers in northwestern Angola. FishBase codes the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, indicating a life associated with the riverbed and lower water column rather than the open water above.
The broader Congo basin Labeobarbus fauna, studied in part through physico-chemical surveys, inhabit riffles, pools and reaches with heterogeneous substrates — sand, gravel and rock — where conductivity, temperature and current velocity are the principal environmental drivers of distribution. The Kwango drains a region of mixed savanna and forest on the southwestern margins of the Congo basin, with seasonal flood pulses influencing river conditions. No species-specific temperature range has been published; the tropical latitude and basin context suggest warm lowland river conditions broadly typical of the Kasai system.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Labeobarbus ansorgii a trophic level of 3.2, indicating an omnivore with a modest animal component in the diet — consistent with the general feeding biology of large African Labeobarbus, which typically graze benthic algae, detritus and invertebrates and may supplement with plant matter and small organisms disturbed from the substrate.

By analogy with congeners and with the benthopelagic coding in FishBase, the species likely works the riverbed for aufwuchs, organic detritus, invertebrates and whatever plant or insect material the current delivers to the bottom. Mating
Like all barbs, Labeobarbus ansorgii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond, no nest construction and no parental care of any kind. Large African riverine barbs in the Labeobarbus group are broadcast spawners, typically undertaking seasonal upstream migrations to gravel-bed spawning grounds triggered by flood cycles and temperature cues.
Driving behaviour in which males pursue gravid females over suitable substrate, with eggs and milt released together in open water or over gravel, is the reproductive mode across the group. Breeding

Labeobarbus ansorgii is not an aquarium species. Its maximum size of 12 in, its benthopelagic river habitat, its Vulnerable conservation status and its absence from the ornamental trade collectively make it unsuitable and inaccessible for private keeping. There are no husbandry accounts in hobby literature.
The species is best regarded as a conservation-relevant wild fish of the Congo basin rather than an aquarium subject. Those interested in large African barbs in an aquarium context would look to more tractable and trade-available relatives; L. ansorgii itself belongs in its river.
Conservation
Labeobarbus ansorgii is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 2009. The assessment reflects the species' restricted known range within the Kwango River system of the Kasai drainage and the limited survey data available from this part of Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Kwango basin faces pressures common across central Africa: artisanal and commercial fishing, catchment degradation through land clearance, and the poorly documented cumulative effects of extractive industry in the region. FishBase notes no interest to commercial fisheries, suggesting the species is not a target species, but bycatch and habitat alteration remain plausible threats for a large, slow-maturing riverine barb with a narrow distribution. The IUCN notes acknowledge conflicting taxonomic and distributional information, and a reassessment with updated survey data would be warranted to confirm the species' current status.
