Labeobarbus semireticulatus is a large, poorly-known cyprinid endemic to the Louvisi River in Gabon, a tributary of the vast Ogooué basin in west-central Africa. Described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1924 from the original genus Varicorhinus, it belongs to the subfamily Torinae — the same broad group that encompasses the Asian mahseers and the big yellowfish of southern and eastern Africa. Its reticulated pattern, referenced in the species name, distinguishes it among the large African barbs of the region, but limited survey work in Gabon's interior has left its biology almost entirely undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus semireticulatus was originally described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1924 under the genus Varicorhinus, a name once used broadly for large African and Asian barb-like cyprinids with lips modified for grazing. Subsequent revisions folded it into Labeobarbus, the genus now used by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) for this group of large African barbs — the same genus that includes the well-known yellowfish of southern Africa and the labeobarbs of East and Central Africa.

The parenthetical authority, (Pellegrin, 1924), signals that the species has been moved out of its original genus. Labeobarbus is placed in the subfamily Torinae within Cyprinidae, sharing that clade with the Asian mahseers (Tor) and related lineages of large, riverine barbs. Within Torinae, the African Labeobarbus species form a distinct radiation tied to the major river systems of sub-Saharan Africa.

This species has received little attention in the ichthyological literature since its original description, and much of its taxonomic context rests on that founding 1924 work. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Detailed morphological data for Labeobarbus semireticulatus are sparse in the available literature. As implied by the species name, the fish displays a reticulated or net-like pattern produced by darker pigment at the bases of individual scales, most pronounced on the upper flanks. This gives the upper half of the body a mottled or cross-hatched appearance that differs from the more uniformly coloured pattern seen in some of its congeners.

As a member of Labeobarbus, it can be expected to share the broad body plan of the group: a robust, moderately deep body, a sub-inferior or inferior mouth often with fleshy lips adapted for benthic feeding, and the standard Cyprinidae fin arrangement. Precise maximum length and weight data have not been retrieved from the available sources, and any figure would be speculative. The size range typical of Labeobarbus in similar Central African rivers runs from roughly 8–19.5 in in adults, but specific data for this species are lacking.

Habitat

Labeobarbus semireticulatus is known from the Louvisi River in Gabon, a watercourse draining into the Ogooué basin — the principal river of Gabon and one of the major equatorial rivers of Central Africa. The Ogooué and its tributaries flow through dense rainforest and savanna-forest transition zones, with water chemistry that varies substantially by season and locality.

Central African freshwater systems in the Gabon interior typically experience marked wet and dry seasons that drive fluctuations in water level, temperature, and turbidity. No specific temperature or pH measurements for the Louvisi River have been retrieved; broader data for equatorial Gabonese rivers suggest a temperature range in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius and near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions, though these figures are general rather than species-specific.

Large riverine barbs in the genus Labeobarbus are typically associated with flowing water — main channels, riffles, and deeper pools — where they forage over rocky or gravelly substrates. The particular microhabitat preferences of this species within the Louvisi have not been documented.

Feeding

No direct feeding studies on Labeobarbus semireticulatus have been located. Members of Labeobarbus are generally omnivorous to herbivorous, with many species adapted to scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces using their modified lips, while also taking benthic invertebrates, detritus, and plant material. The soft, fleshy lips characteristic of the genus suggest a capacity for substrate grazing in this species as well.

In Gabonese river systems, potential food sources would include epilithic algae, aquatic invertebrates, fallen fruits, and organic detritus carried by seasonal floods — a broad dietary base consistent with what is known for large Labeobarbus elsewhere in Africa. Specific gut-content analyses have not been reported for this taxon.

Mating

Labeobarbus semireticulatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with reproductive biology documented across Labeobarbus and the wider family Cyprinidae. No species-specific courtship observations have been published. In related large African barbs, spawning is typically seasonal and linked to river hydrology — rising water levels and flooding at the onset of the wet season trigger upstream or lateral migrations to spawning grounds over gravel beds or flooded vegetation.

During courtship, males pursue gravid females through the water column or over suitable substrate, releasing eggs and milt in brief, close-contact spawning acts. No pair bond is formed and no territory is maintained beyond momentary courtship activity. Eggs and larvae are left entirely unattended once shed.

Breeding

Like all Labeobarbus, this species is an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Spawning in large African river barbs is typically broadcast over gravel or coarse substrate during seasonal high-water events, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settling into interstitial spaces where they develop without guarding. Larvae are free-living from hatching.

No captive breeding records for Labeobarbus semireticulatus have been found. As a Gabonese endemic with very limited trade presence, it is not maintained in aquaria and no husbandry protocols exist. Reproductive parameters such as fecundity, egg diameter, and development times remain undescribed. Facts breeding mode: egg-scatterer over gravel or substrate; no parental care of any kind.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus semireticulatus is not an aquarium fish. It is a Gabonese endemic with no documented presence in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry data are available. Given its large adult size — typical of the genus — and its origin in flowing Central African rivers, it would in any case require very substantial, well-oxygenated aquaria well beyond the capacity of most hobbyist setups.

It is occasionally referenced in systematic accounts of African Cyprinidae and in regional biodiversity surveys of Gabon, but remains a species known primarily from museum specimens rather than living observation.

Conservation

Labeobarbus semireticulatus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the absence of adequate population, distribution, or trend data to assign a threat category. The species is known from the Louvisi River in Gabon and has not been the subject of targeted surveys that would allow an estimate of its range extent or population size.

Gabon's rainforest interior is among the better-preserved tropical landscapes in Africa, with relatively low human population density and large areas under formal protection. However, the Ogooué basin faces ongoing pressure from artisanal and commercial fishing, logging, mining, and the expansion of agricultural land, all of which affect freshwater habitats. Dams and water extraction are additional future risks in Central African river systems.

The Data Deficient designation is a signal that this species needs survey attention, not a statement that it is secure. Its narrow apparent range — a single named river — would place it among the more vulnerable large barbs of the region if that range reflects its true distributional limits rather than collecting gaps.
