Mystacoleucus lepturus is a slender, small-bodied cyprinid of the upper Mekong River basin, described by Huang in 1979 from headwater drainages shared between southern China, Laos and Thailand. Barely reaching 3.5 in standard length, it is built for clear, fast-flowing streams — a benthopelagic shoaler with a compressed, elongate body, a single pair of barbels, and a dorsal fin edged in black. Although inconspicuous in the trade, it is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the narrow range and the mounting pressure on large-river headwaters in the Greater Mekong.

Taxonomy & naming

Mystacoleucus lepturus was described by Huang in 1979 and is placed under the genus Mystacoleucus, a group of Asian cyprinids distinct from the sprawling old catch-all Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Mystacoleucus lepturus Huang, 1979 as the valid combination. The genus name derives from the Greek mystax (whiskered) and leukos (white), referencing the barbels that characterise this group of small barbs.

The species epithet lepturus comes from Greek leptos (slender, thin) and oura (tail), describing the notably slender caudal peduncle that sets this fish apart from broader-bodied relatives. No subspecies are recognised, and the species has not carried any well-documented synonym combinations in the literature.

Morphology

Mystacoleucus lepturus is a laterally compressed, elongate barb with a body depth 3.4–3.8 times into standard length — notably more slender than many of its congeners. It reaches a maximum recorded size of 3.5 in SL. The dorsal fin bears a characteristic black distal margin, a useful identification mark in the field. A single pair of barbels is present at the corner of the mouth, consistent with the genus.

The overall colouration is typical of a clearwater rheophilic cyprinid: a pale, silvery body without bold bars or spots, the black dorsal-fin margin providing the most distinctive visual cue. The slender caudal peduncle — referenced by the species name — distinguishes it from heavier-bodied Mystacoleucus species sharing parts of the Mekong drainage.

Habitat

The species inhabits the upper Mekong River basin, with confirmed records from the Lancang Jiang drainage in southern China, and downstream into Laos and northern Thailand. It is a riverine fish of clear, well-oxygenated running water over sand and gravel substrates, and is also found in rock and boulder-filled headwater streams at higher elevations.

These figures reflect the cool, clear headwater character of the upper Mekong tributaries, which differ markedly from the warm, turbid lowland stretches of the same river system.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study has been published for Mystacoleucus lepturus specifically. By analogy with other small Mekong cyprinids occupying similar benthopelagic niches in clear headwater streams, the diet almost certainly includes small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms — taken from the substrate and water column, along with algae and biofilm scraped from rocks and gravel.

The benthopelagic classification on FishBase is consistent with a species that forages across both the bottom and the mid-water of its stream environment, exploiting the invertebrate drift and periphyton communities characteristic of well-oxygenated upland rivers.

Mating

Like all barbs, Mystacoleucus lepturus is almost certainly an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific spawning observations are documented in the accessible literature for this species, but the pattern universal to cyprinids of this type involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, with eggs and milt released together in a brief burst.

No pair bond forms, no territory is held beyond the moment of courtship, and there is no parental investment of any kind. In headwater rivers, spawning probably coincides with seasonal rainfall patterns and warming of the water, which increase stream flow and food availability — conditions that trigger reproduction in many Mekong cyprinids.

Breeding

No aquarium breeding account for Mystacoleucus lepturus has been documented in the accessible hobbyist literature, reflecting the species' rarity in the trade. Based on its biology as a small, cool-water, clear-stream barb, it would likely follow the standard egg-scattering pattern of the family: adhesive eggs deposited over fine gravel or among aquatic plants, with no nest construction and no guarding of eggs or fry.

A breeding setup for a species of this type would logically replicate the cool, clean, well-oxygenated conditions of its native headwaters — softer, slightly neutral water around 68 °F, strong filtration and current, and a substrate of sand and gravel into which scattered eggs could settle out of adults' reach. Adults would be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

In the aquarium

Mystacoleucus lepturus is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered by hobbyists outside specialist importers dealing in wild-caught Mekong rarities. Its requirements — cool temperatures near 68 °F, clean well-oxygenated water, a low hardness of around 5 dGH, and a neutral pH — place it outside the warm-water tropical community tank norm, and it would need dedicated cool-water conditions similar to those used for hillstream loaches or White Cloud Mountain minnows.

Its slender body and active schooling behaviour would, in principle, suit a spacious tank with good current, sand and gravel substrate, smooth rounded stones and minimal planting. The black-tipped dorsal fin offers a degree of visual interest for the species-focused keeper. Given its Vulnerable status and narrow wild range, any specimens in the trade are likely wild-caught, and captive breeding efforts would carry conservation value.

Conservation

Mystacoleucus lepturus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (assessment year 2009), reflecting concerns about the species' restricted range within the upper Mekong basin and threats to its headwater stream habitat. The upper Mekong and its tributaries in southern China, Laos and Thailand face increasing pressure from hydropower dam construction, water extraction, and sedimentation from land clearance in the catchment — all of which degrade the clear, well-oxygenated riverine conditions this species requires.

The species does not appear to have a significant presence in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a recognised driver of decline. Conservation of Mystacoleucus lepturus depends primarily on the protection of intact upper Mekong headwater drainages and the broader freshwater biodiversity commitments of China, Laos and Thailand within the Mekong River Commission framework.
