Mystacoleucus atridorsalis is a small Southeast Asian cyprinid described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1937 under the original name Barbus atridorsalis, the epithet referring to its dark dorsal surface. A member of the genus Mystacoleucus — a group of slender, riverine barbs distributed across the rivers of mainland Southeast Asia and the northern Sundaland fringe — it inhabits flowing freshwater systems in Thailand and nearby Indochina. Like other members of its genus, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner of the benthic and mid-water zone. It remains largely absent from the international aquarium trade and is not widely documented in hobby literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Mystacoleucus atridorsalis was originally described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1937 under the combination Barbus atridorsalis, one of many small Southeast Asian cyprinids placed in the broadly defined genus Barbus during the early twentieth century. The genus Mystacoleucus was established to accommodate a cluster of slender, barbel-bearing Southeast Asian cyprinids distinguishable from the catch-all Puntius complex by consistent morphological features including the form of the barbels and body proportions.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, records the current valid combination as Mystacoleucus atridorsalis (Fowler, 1937); the parenthetical authority reflects its transfer out of Barbus. The species epithet atridorsalis is Latin for 'black-backed', describing the dark dorsal coloration that characterises the live fish. No subspecies are recognised.

Morphology

Mystacoleucus atridorsalis is a moderately slender cyprinid with the typical elongate-fusiform body plan of the genus. The dorsal surface is notably darkened — giving rise to the species epithet — and the flanks are silvery. The species bears two pairs of barbels as is characteristic of the genus Mystacoleucus, distinguishing it from barbel-less relatives. Fin coloration is generally plain.

Adults may eat their own eggs if they encounter them. Larvae hatch after a short incubation period dependent on water temperature and become free-swimming once the yolk sac is absorbed.

Based on the biology of the genus, any captive specimens would likely benefit from spacious, well-oxygenated aquaria with moderate flow, reflecting the flowing-water habitat of the species in the wild. A soft, slightly acidic to neutral water chemistry at tropical temperatures would be appropriate, along with a varied diet of quality dried, live and frozen foods.
