Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius genyognathus was described by Tyson Roberts in 1998 and is placed in the genus Poropuntius, a grouping of Southeast Asian cyprinids recognised on the basis of pores at the base of the scales and other morphological characters. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid name. The species has not, to date, been moved to or from the old catch-all genus Puntius in the same way that many of the smaller ornamental barbs were reshuffled by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012); Poropuntius is a distinct genus with its own pre-2012 standing.
The species epithet genyognathus is formed from two Greek roots — genys (jaw) and gnathos (jaw, chin) — and refers specifically to the sharp cutting edge on the lower horny jaw sheath, the anatomical character that distinguishes this species within the genus. The authority is unparenthesised, indicating Roberts placed the species in Poropuntius at the time of description.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum size of 4.5 in standard length for Poropuntius genyognathus, placing it among the larger members of the ornamental-barb grade though still modest on a cyprinid scale. The defining feature is the lower jaw: the horny jaw sheath carries a sharp cutting edge, a structure adapted for scraping biofilm, algae and organic crusts from hard substrates — a trophic specialisation shared with other Poropuntius species.
Beyond the jaw structure, the species is a typical member of the genus: moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed, with the small pores at the scale bases that give Poropuntius its name (Greek poros, pore, + Latin puntius, the parent barb group). Detailed meristic data from the original description are not widely reproduced in the secondary literature accessible at the time of writing. Mild sexual dimorphism typical of the group — females fuller-bodied when gravid, males slimmer — is presumed but not specifically documented for this species.
Habitat
Poropuntius genyognathus is recorded from the Tenasserim basin of southern Myanmar and the Kraburi River, which forms part of the Myanmar–Thailand border and drains westward into the Andaman Sea near the northern end of the Malay Peninsula. The Tenasserim range is a narrow, hilly corridor of forested terrain with clear, fast-flowing streams over rocky and sandy substrates — habitats consistent with a scraping jaw sheath adapted to epilithic biofilm.
FishBase characterises the species as freshwater, benthopelagic and tropical, inhabiting soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral waters typical of the rivers draining the western slope of the Tenasserim Hills toward the Andaman Sea. Precise temperature and pH records from field sites have not been widely published, but conditions in the broader region are warm year-round, generally in the mid- to upper twenties Celsius, with moderate soft water chemistry.
Feeding
The horny, sharp-edged jaw sheath of Poropuntius genyognathus points to a diet built substantially around scraping algae and microbial biofilm from rocks, woody debris and other hard surfaces — a feeding mode convergent with that of loricariid plecos and some other rheophilic cyprinids. In fast-moving, clear streams of the Tenasserim range, epilithic algae and periphyton are typically abundant on sunlit rocks, providing a reliable food source.
In addition to scraped material, other Poropuntius species and closely related genera in similar habitats are known to supplement their diet with small invertebrates, plant matter and detritus. Detailed dietary studies for P. genyognathus in the wild have not been published in the sources available, and its captive feeding ecology is poorly documented, but the jaw morphology is the primary character guiding inference about its trophic position.
Mating
No specific field or aquarium observations of courtship behaviour have been published for Poropuntius genyognathus. As a cyprinid barb, it is expected to reproduce by egg-scattering with no parental care — the universal mode in the family Cyprinidae and shared by all members of the barb grade. Spawning is typically triggered by seasonal rainfall, water temperature changes, and photoperiod cues that bring rivers into spate in the Tenasserim region.
In egg-scattering cyprinids generally, a driving male pursues and presses against a gravid female during spawning, the pair releasing eggs and milt together over suitable substrate — rocks, gravel, or plant material. No pair bond is formed and no territory is defended beyond the brief moment of courtship. The adults take no interest in the eggs after broadcast.
Breeding
Poropuntius genyognathus has not been bred in captivity in any documented account in the sources available. On the basis of its family membership (Cyprinidae) and genus, it is inferred to be an egg-scatterer: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered over substrate or among vegetation, with no parental care and eggs or larvae that would be at risk from the adults if kept together.
FishBase records a high resilience rating with a population doubling time of fewer than 15 months, which is consistent with a fast-reproducing small- to medium-bodied cyprinid that likely produces multiple clutches per spawning season when conditions allow. Captive breeding attempts, if any have been made, have not entered the scientific or hobbyist literature. Until specific data become available, breeding guidance for this species must remain inferential.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius genyognathus is not an established aquarium fish. It does not appear in the hobbyist trade under any recognised common name, and no captive husbandry accounts have been published in accessible sources. Its relatively large adult size — approaching 4.5 in SL — and origins in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated Tenasserim hill streams suggest it would require spacious, well-filtered, highly oxygenated water with moderate to strong current if ever kept in captivity.
The scraping jaw morphology implies a need for biofilm or algae-bearing surfaces and supplemental vegetable matter in the diet. Water conditions consistent with its native range — clean, moderately soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm — would be the baseline for any husbandry attempt. Given the absence of captive experience, this species remains a field-study subject rather than an aquarium species.
Conservation
Poropuntius genyognathus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment carried out on 14 March 2011 by Chavalit Vidthayanon. The assessor found no evidence of major population decline, and the species' range in the Tenasserim basin and Kraburi River spans a region that, at the time of assessment, retained substantial forest cover relative to more heavily deforested parts of mainland Southeast Asia.
The Tenasserim range, straddling the Myanmar–Thailand border, has historically experienced less intensive agricultural and industrial pressure than many other parts of the region, though logging and expansion of agriculture pose ongoing threats to freshwater habitats throughout the area. The species' benthopelagic, rheophilic lifestyle in hill streams makes it potentially sensitive to sedimentation and changes in stream flow associated with deforestation. Fishing vulnerability is rated low by FishBase, consistent with Least Concern status, but dedicated freshwater fish surveys in this border region remain sparse.
