Taxonomy & naming
Pangio elongata was formally described by Ralf Britz and John Maclaine in 2007, based on specimens from streams associated with the Tenasserim and Mitan Chaung drainages in Myanmar. The genus Pangio belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true loaches — and was long obscured under the name Acanthophthalmus, a genus first used in the nineteenth century. In 1987 Maurice Kottelat revised the group and placed these eel-loaches in Pangio (Bleeker, 1860), the senior valid combination now followed by the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase.
The epithet elongata is straightforwardly Latin for 'elongated', naming the fish's defining character: an unusually slender, stretched body relative to others in the genus. Vertebral counts (57–62) and the proportionately shallow body depth (~7.8% SL) are the diagnostic features that separate it from morphologically similar congeners such as Pangio oblonga. No subspecies or locality variants have been described.
Morphology
Pangio elongata is a small loach, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of about 2 in — making it one of the more compact members of an already small genus. The body is markedly cylindrical and drawn out, with a shallow body depth that gives the fish an almost thread-like look when seen from the side. Coloration is plain light brown above, paler below, without the bold banding or spotting seen in some other Pangio species. Fin counts are typical for the genus: 9 dorsal soft rays, 8 anal soft rays.
Like all kuhli loaches, Pangio elongata is effectively scaleless — the scales are tiny, deeply embedded and difficult to see — and it carries a small suborbital spine below each eye, a family trait shared across Cobitidae. The skin's near-naked character means the fish absorbs waterborne substances readily, with meaningful implications for medication sensitivity. The species is a facultative air-breather, capable of gulping atmospheric air at the surface when dissolved oxygen is low, a trait common across the Cobitidae.
Habitat
The type locality for Pangio elongata is in the Tenasserim region of southern Myanmar, in stream drainages associated with the Mitan Chaung system. This part of the Malay peninsula and its northern extensions is characterised by slow-moving to gently flowing forest streams over soft substrates of fine sand, mud and accumulated leaf litter, shaded by dense lowland forest canopy. The water is typically warm, soft and slightly acidic, often tinted with dissolved tannins leaching from decaying vegetation.
This is the broad habitat template for the kuhli loach group across mainland Southeast Asia and the Sunda shelf. Pangio elongata, occupying a more northerly part of the genus's range, inhabits lowland freshwater streams and is not a brackish or seasonally migratory species in the manner of some larger loaches. Precise ecological data for this recently described species remain sparse.
Feeding
Pangio elongata is a micro-omnivore and bottom-dweller in the manner of all kuhli loaches, foraging along and just beneath the substrate surface during the hours of darkness. The natural diet consists of small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans — as well as organic detritus and any edible particles encountered while sifting through sand and leaf litter. No specific dietary study has been published for this species.
In the aquarium the species should be offered sinking foods delivered at or after lights-out, when it is most active and boldest. Sinking pellets, frozen or live bloodworm, tubifex, and small sinking wafers are all appropriate. Because kuhli loaches feed mainly after dark and stay buried or hidden by day, they are frequently underfed in community tanks where food is added at the water surface in the morning; a targeted late-evening feeding is the most reliable way to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.
Mating
Nothing is documented in the scientific literature about the mating behaviour of Pangio elongata specifically. Across the kuhli loach group, external sexual dimorphism is minimal: sexually mature females tend to be visibly plumper in the belly region when in breeding condition, and the pectoral fins of males in some Pangio species show subtle differences in cross-sectional shape, but sexing individual fish — particularly outside of spawning condition — is difficult at best.
Broadly, spawning in Pangio is understood to occur in association with warm, soft water conditions, and in some species has been linked to the onset of the rainy season. The fish are not reported to form lasting pair bonds or territories. The practical difficulty of maintaining confirmed sexed pairs, and the species' rarity in the trade, means that mating observations for Pangio elongata in captivity are essentially absent from the aquarium literature.
Breeding
Pangio elongata is not bred in home aquaria, and there are no documented aquarium spawnings in the available literature. Kuhli loaches as a group are very rarely bred in captivity; when spawning does occur it follows the general Cobitidae pattern — the fish scatter small, greenish adhesive eggs among floating plant roots or fine-leaved surface vegetation, with no parental care whatsoever. Eggs and larvae are left to develop unattended, and adults take no further interest in them.
The trade in kuhli loaches, including the less common species such as Pangio elongata when they appear in the hobby, is supplied primarily by wild collection rather than captive propagation. There is no evidence of hormone-induced farm production for this species. Keepers should approach Pangio elongata as a fish to observe and maintain over the long term, not one likely to spawn under normal aquarium conditions.
In the aquarium
Pangio elongata is a peaceful, timid, nocturnal fish that does best in a species-appropriate setup rather than a busy community tank. The single most important husbandry requirement is substrate: fine, smooth sand is mandatory. Kuhli loaches burrow, and sharp gravel or coarse substrate damages their near-scaleless skin and prevents the natural burrowing that is central to their sense of security. A sand bed of at least 1–2 in depth, supplemented with leaf litter, smooth pebbles and pieces of driftwood, closely replicates the forest-stream environment and dramatically reduces stress.
The species should be kept in a group — a single kuhli loach is a hidden, rarely-seen kuhli loach. A group of five or more individuals will interact, emerge more readily and show natural clustering behaviour. Water should be warm (75–84 °F), soft and slightly acidic, with gentle filtration; strong flow is not required. Because Pangio elongata is near-scaleless it is sensitive to copper-based medications and should be treated at reduced doses if disease arises — and it may well be the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich, so close monitoring is warranted. Lighting should be subdued; floating plants help reduce surface brightness and encourage daytime activity. Feed sinking foods at lights-out to ensure the fish actually get fed.
Conservation
Pangio elongata is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2011), reflecting the limited information available about its population size, distribution extent, and the pressures it faces. The species is known from a restricted area of the Tenasserim drainage in Myanmar, a region that has experienced deforestation and land-use change but where freshwater fish communities remain poorly surveyed.
The kuhli loach group as a whole is susceptible to the habitat changes affecting lowland forest streams across Southeast Asia — sedimentation from forest clearance, water extraction and the degradation of riparian canopy. For narrow-range species like Pangio elongata, even localised habitat loss could represent a significant portion of the total population. The species rarely appears in the aquarium trade, and wild collection pressure is likely minimal at present, but the combination of restricted range, poor data and ongoing regional land-use pressures merits continued monitoring.
