Taxonomy & naming
Pethia lutea was described by Plamoottil and Abraham in 2014, placed directly in the genus Pethia rather than in the old catch-all Puntius. The genus Pethia itself was one of several segregates erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in their landmark 2012 revision of the South Asian barb assemblage, which broke apart the highly polyphyletic Puntius into numerous more natural genera — among them Pethia, Dawkinsia, Sahyadria, and Systomus — based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence. Because Pethia lutea was named after this reclassification, it has no widely cited old Puntius combination.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid name. The species belongs to a cluster of small Indian barbs in Pethia characterised by reduced or absent lateral-line scales, a modest adult size, and a preference for cool upland waters. The genus now contains several Western Ghats endemics, many of them described in the 2010s as systematic attention turned to the region's exceptional cyprinid diversity.
Morphology
Pethia lutea is a small barb, reaching approximately 2 in in standard length. The body is typical of the genus — laterally compressed, moderately deep, with a short snout and a subterminal mouth suited to picking small food items from the substrate and mid-water. The ground coloration is yellowish to golden (the basis of the specific name), and the flanks may show darker pigmentation or spotting consistent with the patterning seen in related Western Ghats Pethia.
Detailed published morphometric and meristic data for this species remain sparse in the secondary literature, as is common for many barbs described in the wave of revisions that followed the 2012 generic overhaul. Information on scale counts, fin-ray formulae and precise colour pattern in life should be taken from Plamoottil and Abraham's original description.
Habitat
Pethia lutea is known from hill stream habitats in the Nilgiri Hills region of the Western Ghats, one of the world's recognised biodiversity hotspots. Western Ghats hill streams are typically cool (commonly 64–75 °F at elevation), clear to slightly tea-stained, well-oxygenated, and fast-flowing over rocky or gravelly substrates with patches of aquatic vegetation and leafy debris. Water chemistry tends toward soft and near-neutral to mildly acidic (pH around 6.5–7.0), reflecting the laterite and granite geology of the highlands.
Like most small Pethia from this zone, the species likely inhabits the shallower, swifter margins of streams rather than deep pools, sheltering among rocks and riparian root mats. The Nilgiri Hills receive strong seasonal rainfall from both the southwest and northeast monsoons, so stream conditions — temperature, discharge and turbidity — fluctuate considerably across the year.
Feeding
Pethia lutea is presumed to be an omnivore in the manner characteristic of small Western Ghats barbs, taking small invertebrates (insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms), algal films, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. In the fast-flowing, often food-rich hill streams of the Nilgiris, such a generalised diet provides access to the diverse benthic invertebrate communities supported by leaf litter and biofilm.
In aquarium settings, the species accepts standard small foods: good-quality micro-pellets and flake, supplemented with live or frozen fare such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and bloodworm. A component of vegetable matter — blanched spinach, spirulina-enriched foods — is consistent with the diet of related Pethia and is advisable for long-term health.
Mating
Pethia lutea, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed and no pair bond is formed. When a gravid female is in condition, males compete to drive her through fine-leaved vegetation or over gravel, pressing alongside her briefly as eggs and milt are simultaneously released. The adhesive eggs settle among plants or into crevices in the substrate.
In the hill streams of the Western Ghats, spawning activity in wild populations is likely tied to seasonal cues — temperature shifts and changes in water volume associated with the monsoon — though specific data for this species are not published. Males in breeding condition typically intensify in colour, and dominant individuals may be more active in courtship pursuit.
Breeding
As a barb, Pethia lutea is expected to breed in the typical egg-scattering fashion. Adults give no parental care and will consume their own eggs if left with them. In an aquarium breeding setup, a separate shallow tank with soft, slightly acidic and well-oxygenated water is appropriate, furnished with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop over a mesh or marbled base so eggs fall beyond the adults' reach. A well-conditioned pair or small group is introduced, and spawning typically occurs in the morning.
Eggs should be expected to hatch within one to two days at appropriate temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming shortly after. First foods of infusoria and, once mouths are large enough, newly hatched brine shrimp are standard for hill-stream barb fry. No published captive-breeding accounts have been widely circulated for this species specifically, given its rarity in the hobby.
In the aquarium
Pethia lutea is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely, if ever, available in the mainstream hobby. Its care requirements, inferred from related Western Ghats Pethia, are those of a cool-water hill-stream species: clean, well-oxygenated, moderately fast-moving water in the range of 64–75 °F, soft and near-neutral chemistry (pH 6.5–7.0), and a tank decorated with smooth stones, fine gravel and some live plants. High summer temperatures common in unheated indoor tanks in temperate climates can be tolerated briefly but should be avoided long-term.
As a shoaling species, it should be kept in groups of six or more. Appropriate tankmates are similarly sized, cool-water fish that will not outcompete it at feeding. The species' restricted range and limited availability mean that any captive stock should be treated as potentially important for maintaining a population outside the wild, and breeding records would be a valuable contribution to knowledge of the species.
Conservation
Pethia lutea has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species is endemic to a restricted area of the Western Ghats, one of the most threatened freshwater fish regions on Earth. The wider Nilgiri Hills and surrounding Western Ghats face severe and ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion (especially tea and coffee cultivation), water extraction for irrigation, siltation from erosion, altered hydrology from reservoir construction, and pollution from agrochemical runoff — all of which degrade the cool, clear hill streams on which small endemic barbs depend.
Numerous Pethia species from the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka are formally threatened on the IUCN Red List, several at Endangered or Critically Endangered level, because of their tiny ranges and highly specific habitat requirements. Given that Pethia lutea appears to be a localised Nilgiri endemic described only in 2014, there is a strong a priori case for treating it as conservation-sensitive until a formal assessment is completed.
