Pethia nigripinnis is a small, darkly finned barb from the cool hill streams of the Western Ghats in southern India, known from the Moyar River drainage in the Nilgiris and the Kalindi Stream in the Wyanad area. Described formally in 2012 from what was long treated as part of the sprawling old genus Puntius, it is a specialist of fast, well-oxygenated, rocky hill-stream environments — a narrow range that places it squarely in the cross-hairs of the hydrological pressures bearing down on the Western Ghats. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2021, and it remains essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, valued more as a data point on the precarious state of peninsular India's freshwater biodiversity than as an ornamental fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia nigripinnis was described by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 as part of a sweeping revision that broke up the old, polyphyletic genus Puntius and erected several new genera to hold the South Asian barbs on a more defensible phylogenetic footing. The species was previously carried under the combination Puntius nigripinnis, and older literature will refer to it by that name. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names and records the current placement as Pethia nigripinnis (Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura & Maduwage, 2012).

The genus Pethia was established to receive a cluster of small, often colourful, predominantly South Asian barbs distinguished by a combination of characters including a simple, un-serrated last dorsal spine (in most species), a dark blotch on the dorsal fin, and a similarly placed blotch near the caudal peduncle. Pethia nigripinnis fits this mould: it is a small, unobtrusive species whose defining visible character is encoded in the specific epithet itself.

Morphology

Pethia nigripinnis is a small barb reaching a maximum of approximately 2 in in standard length. It has the typical deep-bodied, laterally compressed form of the genus, with the moderately large eye and relatively short snout characteristic of these hill-stream minnows. The specific epithet nigripinnis — from Latin niger (black) and pinna (fin) — refers to the dark pigmentation on the fins that distinguishes this species from close relatives.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data in the primary description separate P. nigripinnis from congeners on the basis of fin-ray counts, squamation, and colour pattern. Sexual dimorphism follows the standard cyprinid pattern: females become visibly fuller-bodied when gravid, while males in breeding condition may show more intense pigmentation, though detailed accounts of dimorphism in this species are sparse in accessible literature.

Habitat

The species is known from fast-flowing, clear hill streams in the Western Ghats — specifically the Moyar River drainage in the Nilgiri Hills and the Kalindi Stream in the Wyanad district. These are cool, well-oxygenated, rocky and cobble-strewn watercourses typical of the upper reaches of rivers that drain the high Western Ghats escarpment before descending to the Deccan plain or the Malabar coast.

Water conditions in these habitats are markedly cooler than in the lowland rivers of peninsular India: Seriously Fish records a temperature range of 61–70 °F for the species, with a pH of 5.5–7.5 (soft to slightly acidic through neutral) and a hardness range of approximately 36–215 ppm. The combination of cool temperature, strong flow, high dissolved oxygen and relatively low conductivity defines the niche. The fish are benthopelagic — associated with the substrate and lower water column among stones and cobbles — rather than occupying the open midwater.

Feeding

Pethia nigripinnis is an omnivore, exploiting the range of food sources available on and among the rocky substrate of its hill-stream habitat. FishBase and Seriously Fish record a diet encompassing diatoms, filamentous algae, organic detritus, aquatic and terrestrial insects, small worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton — a profile typical of small barbs that feed opportunistically across the benthos.

In an aquarium context, the species would be expected to accept small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworm, along with good-quality micro-pellets and some vegetable matter. However, because the species has not been established in the hobby, accounts of captive feeding are essentially absent from the literature.

Mating

Pethia nigripinnis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of barbs generally. No specific field or captive observations of courtship in this species have been published in accessible sources, but its biology follows the standard Pethia pattern: when a female reaches spawning condition, a male pursues her through the substrate and vegetation, driving her insistently until the pair press briefly together and release eggs and milt simultaneously.

There is no pair bond and no territory beyond a transient chasing range during active courtship. Spawning in the wild is likely triggered by seasonal shifts in temperature and flow associated with the monsoon cycle, which brings heavy rainfall to the Western Ghats and raises stream levels, cools water temperatures further, and flushes fine food particles through the system.

Breeding

Pethia nigripinnis has not been bred in captivity to any documented extent, and Seriously Fish notes that captive breeding has not yet been achieved. The species' requirement for cool, well-oxygenated running water — conditions that are technically demanding to replicate in an aquarium — is the primary obstacle. In the wild it would scatter adhesive eggs over rocky substrates and fine-leaved vegetation, with neither parent providing any care; eggs and fry are left entirely to their own devices and are subject to predation by the adults themselves.

Any future captive breeding attempt would logically follow the protocols used for other cool, fast-water Pethia species: a dedicated spawning tank with strong circulation, a substrate of smooth pebbles or a fine spawning mop to catch falling eggs, soft-to-neutral water chilled to the 61–70 °F range, and removal of adults immediately after spawning. Eggs of similar species hatch within 24–36 hours at cool temperatures, with free-swimming larvae appearing a few days later.

In the aquarium

Pethia nigripinnis is not an established aquarium species. It has not entered the hobby trade in any meaningful way, and essentially all knowledge of the species derives from scientific survey work and the IUCN assessment process rather than from hobbyist experience. Its cool-water requirements (61–70 °F), preference for fast, well-oxygenated conditions, and restricted wild range make it a poor candidate for standard tropical community tanks.

For the specialist keeper of Western Ghats hillstream fishes, it would require a well-filtered, powerhead-driven tank replicating fast, cool, clear, rocky stream conditions alongside other Pethia or hillstream loach species adapted to the same environment. The species should be regarded as a conservation curiosity rather than a hobby target: its wild populations are under pressure, and the practical challenges of sourcing and maintaining it — combined with its non-existent captive-bred availability — place it firmly outside mainstream fishkeeping.

Conservation

Pethia nigripinnis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, based on a 2021 evaluation. The species has a small and restricted range within the Western Ghats — one of the world's most imperilled biodiversity hotspots — confined to the Moyar River drainage in the Nilgiris and the Kalindi Stream in the Wyanad area of Kerala. Such a narrow endemic range leaves it with almost no buffer against local habitat degradation.

The Western Ghats freshwater fauna faces a convergence of threats: agricultural water extraction reducing stream flow and raising temperatures beyond the tolerances of cool-water specialists; dam construction fragmenting river systems; siltation from deforested hillsides smothering rocky substrates; and pollution from plantation agriculture. For a species like P. nigripinnis, whose entire known range could fit within a handful of stream kilometres, any one of these pressures operating at the local level is capable of causing effective extirpation. The species' absence from the aquarium trade means there is no captive population providing any insurance against wild population collapse.
