Taxonomy & naming
Pethia pookodensis was described by Mercy and Jacob in 2007 from Pookode Lake, Wayanad, Kerala, India, which serves as the type locality. It was originally assigned to the catch-all genus Puntius, in which most small South Asian barbs were then housed, appearing in early literature as Puntius pookodensis.
The comprehensive 2012 revision of South Asian small barbs by Pethiyagoda and colleagues dismantled the old Puntius aggregate and erected several new genera on the basis of morphological and molecular characters. Pethia pookodensis was moved into the new genus Pethia, which now contains a number of smaller, often brightly coloured Indian and Sri Lankan species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, records the current valid combination as Pethia pookodensis (Mercy & Jacob, 2007), with the parenthetical authority indicating transfer out of the original genus.
Morphology
Pethia pookodensis is a small, deep-bodied barb reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in. The body profile is laterally compressed with the rounded, high-backed shape characteristic of the genus. Adult males are visually arresting: the body is suffused deep red, and the dorsal, pectoral, ventral and anal fins are saffron to red. This intense colouration makes breeding males one of the more striking small barbs in the Indian ichthyofauna.
Comparative morphological data from work on related Pethia species confirms the species' diagnostic characters within the genus, including fin colouration and body proportions. Females are presumed to be less intensely coloured and rounder in the abdominal region when gravid, as is typical for the genus, though detailed published dimorphism data are sparse.
Habitat
The entire known distribution of Pethia pookodensis is restricted to Pookode Lake in the Wayanad Plateau of the Western Ghats, Kerala, India, at an elevation of approximately 2526 ft above sea level. This is a small, shallow natural lake fed by hill streams and surrounded by mixed forest and agricultural land. The lake is classified as a freshwater habitat and the species shows a preference for flowing or well-oxygenated conditions within and adjacent to the lake system.
FishBase records a temperature of approximately 77 °F and a pH of around 6.5 with a hardness near 10 dH for the type locality, consistent with the cool, soft, mildly acidic water typical of elevated Western Ghats lake habitats. The Seriously Fish profile indicates a slightly broader temperature window of 72–77 °F, reflecting seasonal and microhabitat variation within the lake. These conditions — cool, oxygen-rich, near-neutral to slightly acidic — place it firmly among the Western Ghats hill-lake assemblage rather than the warmer lowland river barbs.
Feeding
Pethia pookodensis is an omnivore typical of small South Asian barbs. In its lake habitat it forages on a mixed diet of diatoms, filamentous algae, organic detritus and small invertebrates including aquatic insects, worms and crustaceans. This broad dietary flexibility allows it to exploit the varied food resources available at different times of year in a small, enclosed lake system.
In aquarium care the species accepts small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp — as well as quality dried flakes enriched with plant matter. Providing a diet that includes vegetable components is advisable for long-term health and colour maintenance, mirroring the algal and detrital component of its natural intake.
Mating
Pethia pookodensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in common with all barbs. There is no nest construction, no pair bond, and no parental care of any kind. During courtship a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the two pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are simultaneously released.
Colouration intensifies in males at spawning readiness, with the already vivid red body becoming even more saturated as males compete to drive females. The adhesive eggs fall among plants or onto the substrate below, where — with no adult remaining to protect them — they are vulnerable to predation by the spawning adults themselves.
Breeding
In aquarium conditions Pethia pookodensis can be bred using a setup similar to that employed for other small Indian barbs. A separate spawning vessel with soft, slightly acidic water at the cooler end of the species' temperature range (around 72–73 °F), fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate mesh or fine gravel layer allows eggs to fall clear of the adults.
A conditioned pair or small group is introduced and spawning typically occurs in the morning. The adults must be removed promptly after spawning is complete, as they will consume eggs and fry given access. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at suitable temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later. The species is rarely encountered in the hobby owing to its rarity and Critically Endangered status, and captive breeding is therefore of genuine conservation significance.
In the aquarium
Pethia pookodensis is virtually unknown in the aquarium trade and essentially absent from the mainstream hobby. Its extreme rarity in the wild and its Critically Endangered status mean that collection and export from India is not a realistic source of specimens; any fish available would be from the very rare captive-bred stock.
For the small number of keepers who do maintain the species, it requires cool, soft, well-oxygenated water in the 72–77 °F range at a pH near 6.5, consistent with its high-altitude lake origin. It is a peaceful schooling species that should be kept in groups of six or more. Tankmates should be small, non-aggressive species that tolerate similar cool conditions. A varied diet of small live and frozen foods alongside quality flakes with plant matter suits it well. Given its conservation status, any captive population should be managed with breeding records and potential coordination with conservation programmes.
Conservation
Pethia pookodensis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 11 June 2010. It is one of the most threatened freshwater fishes in India, confined entirely to a single small lake — Pookode Lake — with an effective range that is negligible on any biogeographic scale. Any catastrophic event affecting the lake, or any sustained degradation of water quality, could extinguish the species entirely.
Pookode Lake is a tourist destination in the Wayanad district and is subject to pollution, increased nutrient loading and catchment disturbance from surrounding agricultural and residential land use. The Western Ghats as a whole is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots and is under severe and escalating pressure from habitat conversion, water extraction and pollution. Pethia pookodensis exemplifies the vulnerability of single-lake endemic fishes: lacking any refugial population, it has no buffer against local stochastic events. Conservation measures focused on the Pookode Lake catchment, water quality monitoring and potential ex-situ captive breeding represent the primary avenues for securing the species' survival.
