Pethia sahit is a small, recently described barb endemic to the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India, known from the Kumaradhara River drainage in the Sahyadri mountain range. Described in 2018 from a site shared with other Pethia species, it represents the continued discovery of narrow-range cyprinids within one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots. The species is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, its restricted area of occupancy and ongoing degradation of its forest stream habitat placing it among the more vulnerable members of an already imperilled regional fauna.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia sahit was formally described by Katwate, Kumkar, Raghavan and Dahanukar in 2018, published in Zootaxa 4434:529–546. The species was collected from the Kumaradhara River drainage in the Western Ghats of Karnataka and was distinguished from syntopic congeners on the basis of meristic and morphological characters. The Catalog of Fishes places it in the genus Pethia, with the authority in parentheses reflecting the standard notation for a species described under that name from the outset — unlike many Western Ghats barbs that were originally described in the old genus Puntius before the 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda et al., Pethia sahit was described directly into the modern genus arrangement.

The genus Pethia, erected to accommodate a suite of small South Asian barbs previously lumped in Puntius, takes its name from a Sinhala vernacular term for small cyprinids. The species name sahit has not been explicitly glossed in the available literature, but likely honours a person or locality connected with the discovery locality in the Sahyadri ranges. This region — the Sahyadri or Western Ghats — gives the species both its habitat and the informal colloquial label sometimes applied to it.

Morphology

Pethia sahit is a small barb, with published data placing maximum standard length at approximately 1.5 in SL, consistent with the diminutive body size typical of the Indian Pethia assemblage. Its body form follows the compressed, moderately deep profile characteristic of the genus. As with most of its close relatives it lacks a dorsal spine, and the lateral line and squamation patterns form part of the suite of characters used to distinguish it from the several syntopic Pethia species in the Kumaradhara system.

Detailed colour descriptions from the type series have not been widely disseminated in hobbyist literature, as the species has not entered the aquarium trade. Its small size and the broadly similar patterning shared by many Western Ghats Pethia — often involving dark lateral blotches, a dark caudal spot, and subtle fin markings — make careful examination of meristics and proportions necessary for certain identification alongside sympatric congeners.

Habitat

The species is known from the Kumaradhara River drainage in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India, a system draining the eastern slope of the Sahyadri range before joining the Netravathi–Gurpur network. Like most Western Ghats stream barbs it inhabits clear, fast-flowing hill streams with rocky or gravelly substrates and dense riparian forest cover, where the canopy shades the water and fallen leaf litter and woody debris provide shelter and feeding opportunities.

These streams tend to be well-oxygenated, cool to moderately warm, and near-neutral in chemistry, reflecting their origin in highland forest catchments rather than the warmer, more organic lowland zones. The precise physical parameters for Pethia sahit have not been published in detail, but Western Ghats congeners in analogous drainages typically inhabit water at roughly 64–75 °F with a pH near neutral. Seasonality is pronounced: monsoon flood events dramatically alter flow and turbidity in these systems, and the fish are adapted to the feast-and-drought rhythms of a Ghats hill stream.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies exist for Pethia sahit, but its ecology and body form place it firmly within the guild of small omnivorous insectivorous barbs typical of Western Ghats hill streams. Such species typically forage on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — chironomid larvae, mayfly and caddisfly nymphs, small crustaceans and worms — as well as algae and fine plant or detrital material scraped or picked from rocky and gravelly substrates.

The active, schooling behaviour seen in Pethia generally supports continuous foraging throughout daylight hours, with food items taken from the substrate, the water column, and the surface film as opportunity arises. In the aquarium, congeners with similar ecology accept fine-grade prepared foods, live and frozen small invertebrates, and vegetable-based supplements without difficulty.

Mating

Pethia sahit has not been kept or bred in captivity to any documented degree, and its reproductive behaviour in the wild has not been specifically studied. Its placement in Pethia and its hill-stream ecology point clearly toward the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal in the genus. During courtship a driving male pursues a gravid female through submerged vegetation, among rocks, or over gravel, and the pair press together briefly at the moment of egg and milt release.

No pair bond is formed and no territory is maintained beyond a transient assertion during active driving behaviour. Spawning in Western Ghats barbs is often tied to monsoon onset or the period of post-monsoon high water, when rising temperatures and increased flow can act as environmental cues. Adults take no interest in the eggs once they are scattered, and in many species will consume them if given the chance.

Breeding

There are no published accounts of Pethia sahit being bred in aquaria, reflecting its complete absence from the hobby trade. As a Western Ghats endemic that has not been collected for ornamental purposes, the species exists in the literature as a scientific description rather than as a husbandry subject. By analogy with congeneric species that have been bred in captivity, breeding would be expected to follow the pattern common across Pethia: adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, moss, or gravel, hatching within one to two days at appropriate temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later and accepting infusoria-grade live food at first.

Adults offer no parental care and would need to be separated from the eggs promptly in a controlled breeding situation. In the wild, egg survival depends on the eggs lodging in substrate crevices or among plant roots out of the reach of the scattering adults and other stream residents.

In the aquarium

Pethia sahit is not present in the aquarium hobby and has not been commercially collected. Its status as a Critically range-restricted Western Ghats endemic, combined with its Endangered listing, makes it an unlikely candidate for legal collection, and no captive population is known to exist outside its native drainage.

For those with a specific interest in the Western Ghats Pethia group, several congeners with similar habitat requirements are occasionally available through specialist suppliers and represent an appropriate proxy for understanding the care requirements of the group: cool, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water, rocky or gravelly substrate, and a diet emphasising small live or frozen invertebrates. The endemic hill-stream barbs of the Western Ghats are among the most interesting small cyprinids in the world, and increased hobbyist awareness of the group may support the conservation visibility these species need.

Conservation

Pethia sahit is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (Category EN, criteria B1ab(iii)), with the assessment completed on 28 June 2020. The primary basis for the listing is the species' extremely restricted area of occupancy — under 311 mi² — combined with continuing decline in the quality and extent of its riparian forest habitat. As an endemic of the Kumaradhara River drainage alone, any degradation of that system represents a disproportionate threat to the species' entire global population.

The Western Ghats are a global biodiversity hotspot subject to intense and continuing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, dam construction, water extraction for irrigation, and pollution from settlements and plantations. Hill-stream endemics like Pethia sahit, confined to a single river system and dependent on intact forest cover to maintain stream flow, temperature, and water quality, are among the most vulnerable elements of India's freshwater fauna. The species has not entered the aquarium trade and so faces no additional pressure from collection, but its survival is contingent on the protection of the remnant forest patches within the Kumaradhara catchment.
