Taxonomy & naming
Pethia sanjaymoluri was described by Katwate, Kumkar, Raghavan and Dahanukar in 2016 as a new species of small barb from the Western Ghats of India. The authority is parenthetical in the style used when a species is placed in a genus other than the one used in the original description, here reflecting its placement within Pethia.
The genus Pethia was established by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 to accommodate a cluster of small South Asian barbs long grouped under the sprawling genus Puntius, which had become polyphyletic as molecular and morphological work accumulated. Species now in Pethia are diagnosed by a combination of characters including a black spot on the caudal peduncle, an incomplete lateral line, and a series of meristic features. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Pethia sanjaymoluri as the valid combination.
The species epithet honours Sanjay Molur, an Indian wildlife biologist and conservationist who contributed substantially to the documentation and protection of freshwater biodiversity in South Asia.
Morphology
Pethia sanjaymoluri is a small barb, reaching a modest total length consistent with others in the genus — typically a few centimetres. Like its congeners, it has a laterally compressed body, an incomplete lateral line, and the characteristic small size that defines Pethia. Diagnostic features distinguishing it from related species were detailed in the original description, including counts of scales along and above the lateral line and the pattern and disposition of dark markings.
In the field, Pethia species of the Western Ghats often carry dark spots or bars on the body and caudal peduncle, and the coloration is typically more vivid in live fish than in preserved specimens. Because this species is not established in the aquarium trade, published photographs of living fish are scarce and colour details in life are incompletely documented in available hobbyist sources.
Habitat
Pethia sanjaymoluri is native to hill streams of the Western Ghats, the mountain chain running along the western coast of peninsular India that has been recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Western Ghats streams at the elevations where Pethia species are typically found are characterised by swift, well-oxygenated, clear water flowing over rocky or gravelly substrates, with seasonal variation in flow tied to the monsoon.
Water chemistry in these hill streams is generally soft to moderately hard and near-neutral to slightly acidic, with temperatures that can be noticeably cooler than lowland tropical waters during the cooler dry season. These conditions — high oxygen, moderate temperatures, low nutrient levels — contrast sharply with the slow, warm, organically enriched waters of the lowland plains and impose specific physiological demands on the fish that inhabit them.
Feeding
Like most small Pethia species, Pethia sanjaymoluri is an omnivore, feeding opportunistically on the invertebrates, algae, and fine organic material available in its stream microhabitat. Western Ghats hill stream barbs commonly graze biofilm and aufwuchs from rock surfaces, pick off small aquatic insects and their larvae from the substrate and current, and take terrestrial invertebrates that fall into the water.
No detailed dietary study has been published for this species specifically. Its ecology is inferred from the broader literature on Pethia and on Western Ghats stream fishes, which consistently document a generalist invertivore-omnivore feeding guild for small-bodied barbs in similar habitats.
Mating
Pethia sanjaymoluri is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in keeping with the reproductive strategy of all barbs. No specialised courtship structures or parental behaviour are known for any Pethia species. During spawning a male actively drives a gravid female through vegetation or along the substrate, and the two release eggs and milt together in brief bursts of activity.
There is no pair bond, no territory held beyond a transient courtship area, and no post-spawning association between the adults. In Western Ghats stream barbs, spawning is likely seasonal and tied to monsoon hydrology — rising water levels, increased flow, and changes in temperature and food availability serve as the proximate cues that bring fish into breeding condition.
Breeding
As with all barbs, Pethia sanjaymoluri scatters adhesive eggs over the substrate or among vegetation and provides no parental care whatsoever. Eggs are left where they fall; adults do not guard, fan, or attend them, and will consume eggs and larvae given the opportunity. Hatching and larval development proceed without any adult involvement.
This species has not been bred in captivity in any documented or widely reported sense. Its recent description, narrow distribution, and absence from the aquarium trade mean that the specific conditions required to bring it into breeding condition in an aquarium setting — water chemistry, temperature, flow rate, seasonal cues — have not been established in the hobbyist literature.
In the aquarium
Pethia sanjaymoluri is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is an extremely rare endemic with a restricted natural range, described only in 2016, and has not entered commercial collection or the ornamental fish trade in any meaningful way. No care guides, keeper accounts, or breeding reports appear in the hobbyist literature.
In principle, the requirements of comparable Western Ghats hill stream barbs — cool, well-oxygenated, soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water with good current, a varied diet of live and prepared foods, and the company of their own species in a group — would serve as a starting framework. However, without documented aquarium experience for this species specifically, no reliable care recommendations can be given.
Conservation
Pethia sanjaymoluri has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). This is common for species described recently — the 2016 description postdates the most recent assessment cycles for Indian freshwater fish, and the species' very limited documentation means formal population data are lacking.
Its likely conservation situation, however, is precarious. The Western Ghats freshwater fauna faces severe and growing pressure: agricultural conversion of riparian lands, sand mining from stream channels, damming, water extraction for irrigation, and pollution from plantations and urban growth all degrade the hill stream habitats on which endemics like Pethia sanjaymoluri depend. Narrow-range endemics confined to a single river system or sub-catchment are particularly vulnerable to local extinction because there is no adjoining population to recolonise lost habitat. The region has the highest concentration of threatened freshwater fish in Asia, and newly described species with small ranges routinely qualify for threatened categories once formally assessed.
