Pethia setnai, the indigo barb, is a small endemic cyprinid restricted to the clear, fast-flowing streams of Goa and the northern Western Ghats of India. Reaching barely 2 in in total length, it is a benthopelagic schooling fish of pristine hill streams, identifiable by the vivid red coloration of the fins in males. Its highly restricted range and dependence on clean, intact riparian habitat have made it one of the threatened endemics of the Western Ghats — it has been assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN — and captive breeding studies document its egg-scattering reproductive strategy for the first time in laboratory conditions.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia setnai was described by Chhapgar and Sane in 1992 from specimens collected in Goa, India. The species was originally placed in the genus Puntius, the old catch-all for South Asian small barbs, and for many years appeared in literature and trade under the combination Puntius setnai. A phylogenetic revision of the group by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) split the heterogeneous Puntius complex, and the Catalog of Fishes now lists the valid genus as Pethia for this cluster of small, chiefly Indian-subcontinent species. Subsequent osteological and phylogenetic research by Katwate et al. (2013), published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa, confirmed the placement of setnai within Pethia and investigated its position among the threatened endemic barbs of the northern Western Ghats.

The species is placed in the subfamily Smiliogastrinae within Cyprinidae. The common names "indigo barb" and "narayan barb" circulate in trade, though the latter is sometimes applied confusingly to P. narayani as well; "indigo barb" is the more distinctive epithet and is preferred here.

Morphology

Pethia setnai is a small, laterally compressed barb reaching a maximum total length of 2 in, typical of the compact hill-stream cyprinids of the Western Ghats. The body is deep-bodied and short, with the characteristic Pethia profile. Males develop conspicuously bright red fins during breeding condition, a striking display against the body coloration that makes them readily distinguishable from females. Females are generally plainer in fin color and become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid with eggs.

Beyond the sexually dimorphic fin coloration, the species shares the general Pethia bauplan: a relatively large eye for a stream fish, moderately sized scales, and the small, subterminal mouth appropriate for a benthopelagic omnivore picking food from substrates and the water column.

Habitat

Pethia setnai is endemic to Goa and the adjacent northern Western Ghats — its westward-flowing river drainages in Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka — making it one of the most range-restricted barbs in the Indian subcontinent. The species inhabits clear, well-oxygenated hill streams and small rivers, living as a benthopelagic shoaler over rocky and gravel substrates where water clarity is high and current is appreciable.

The freshwater systems of this region are seasonally influenced by the monsoon, delivering a strong annual cycle of discharge. Outside the monsoon, streams run clear and cool in the upland sections where the species is most at home. The Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot holds extraordinary concentrations of endemic freshwater fish, and P. setnai is one of many narrow-range species dependent on the intact forest cover and clean water of these catchments.

Feeding

Pethia setnai is an omnivore, taking a mixed diet of small invertebrates — worms, aquatic insect larvae and crustaceans — alongside plant matter and organic detritus as it forages over the substrate and through the water column. This feeding strategy is typical of the small Pethia barbs of the Western Ghats, which exploit the invertebrate fauna of clear-water streams as well as algae and terrestrial inputs.

In the aquarium the species accepts readily available foods without difficulty: quality flakes and micro-pellets form a suitable base, supplemented with live and frozen items such as bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp to maintain condition and coloration. Vegetable-based foods are a useful dietary component. The species feeds actively and does well on varied offerings.

Mating

Like all barbs, Pethia setnai is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. A receptive male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, pressing alongside her briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. No pair bond is formed and no territory is held after spawning.

Males in breeding condition are distinguished by their intensified red fin coloration, which is likely a signal of fitness in the competition to drive and court females. The eggs are adhesive and settle among plants, gravel, or substrate after release, where — in the absence of any parental care — they are as likely to be consumed by the spawning adults as to hatch undisturbed.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Pethia setnai has been documented for the first time by Ravi et al. in research published via SSRN, representing a significant milestone for a threatened endemic with limited captive husbandry knowledge. The study recorded a fecundity of approximately 92 eggs per spawning event, with hatching occurring within 26–28 hours under the study conditions. Larvae measured approximately 0.5 in total length at hatch.

The reproductive mode is the standard barb egg-scattering pattern: eggs are scattered over plants or fine substrates during a driving pursuit by the male, and the adults provide no care thereafter. In captive settings the adults should be separated from the spawn after spawning to prevent egg predation. Newly hatched larvae require infusoria-scale food initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. The relatively low fecundity compared to many cyprinids reflects the restricted production typical of small hill-stream specialists.

In the aquarium

Pethia setnai is a peaceful community fish suited to a species tank or a carefully chosen community of similarly-sized, non-aggressive fishes. It requires clean, well-oxygenated water reflecting its hill-stream origins: temperatures between 20 and 81 °F (68–81°F), a pH of 6.0–7.5, and moderate hardness (broadly 90–268 ppm total dissolved solids). Good filtration and regular water changes are important for a species whose wild habitat is characterised by clear, unpolluted water.

As a shoaling species it should be kept in groups of at least six; a larger group reduces stress and elicits more natural schooling and courtship behaviour, bringing out the males' striking red fin coloration. A planted tank with some open swimming space and a dark substrate complements the fish's appearance. Pethia setnai makes no special demands on water chemistry beyond maintaining good water quality — it is not a delicate fish in a well-maintained setup, but it does not tolerate neglect or poor conditions.

Conservation

Pethia setnai is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B2ab(iii), assessed by Dahanukar (2015; assessment year 2015, original assessment 10 September 2010). The Vulnerable listing reflects its small area of occupancy, its restriction to a limited number of locations within the northern Western Ghats, and ongoing decline in the extent and quality of its freshwater habitat.

The species faces the full suite of pressures bearing on Western Ghats freshwater fish: deforestation and agricultural conversion reducing riparian cover, water extraction for irrigation and domestic use, pollution from agricultural runoff and mining, and the construction of small check dams and diversions across hill streams. Its narrow endemic range — confirmed by Katwate et al. to span westward-flowing rivers in Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka — means that localised degradation of even a few catchments could have population-level consequences. The Western Ghats are a global biodiversity hotspot, and P. setnai is one of numerous endemic cyprinids requiring targeted watershed protection to persist.
