Taxonomy & naming
Pethia striata was described by Sekharan in 2015 from the Tunga River, a tributary of the Bhadra River within Kudremukh National Park, Karnataka, in the Western Ghats of peninsular India. The holotype (ZSI/SRC F8728, 1 in SL) was taken from a pool-riffle sequence in a clear flowing stream. The species is placed in the genus Pethia, which was established by Pethiyagoda et al. in 2012 to receive a cluster of small South Asian barbs pulled out of the sprawling, paraphyletic Puntius — the valid combination therefore follows the current Catalog of Fishes placement.
The specific epithet striata derives from the Latin striatus, meaning striped, in reference to the lateral stripe pattern that distinguishes this species from congeners. The common name Kudremukh barb refers directly to the national park and massif in which the species was first collected. Older literature may reference small Western Ghats barbs under Puntius, but P. striata has no earlier combination — it was never placed in Puntius; Pethia was the genus used in the original description.
Morphology
Pethia striata is a very small barb, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed and moderately deep-bodied, with the typical cyprinid profile of a small hill-stream barb. The species is characterised by the lateral stripe pattern that gives it its name, running along the flank as a dark horizontal band.
Sexual dimorphism follows the typical Pethia pattern: females become noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder in the abdomen when gravid, while males are slimmer and may show more intense coloration during the breeding season. Detailed meristic data are recorded in the original description by Sekharan (2015), which serves as the primary morphological reference.
Habitat
Within the Tunga River basin, Pethia striata occupies pool-riffle sequences in clear, flowing streams beneath dense riparian canopy. FishBase records the habitat as shallow pools with a substrate of leaf litter — including bamboo leaves — and clay, with aquatic vegetation dominated by Lagenandra, a genus of rheophytic aroids characteristic of fast-water sections in the Western Ghats. The species has been found in groups of three to four individuals in association with Puntius sahyadriensis and Dawkinsia arulius.
Water chemistry at the type locality was measured at pH 6.1 and a temperature of 78 °F (78 °F), with a general range of around 79 °F (79 °F) noted for the region. These are soft, near-neutral, well-oxygenated conditions typical of Western Ghats hill streams draining the high rainfall zone of the southern escarpment. The species' entire confirmed range lies within Kudremukh National Park, Karnataka.
Feeding
Pethia striata is inferred to be omnivorous, consistent with the feeding ecology of other small Pethia and broader cyprinid associates found in the same stream community. In the wild, small barbs in Western Ghats hill streams typically take a mix of microinvertebrates — chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, and worms — alongside algal films scraped from submerged rock and leaf litter surfaces, and incidental organic detritus.
Specific stomach-content studies for P. striata are not available in published literature. The species' small size (max 1.5 in SL) and association with a structurally complex, leaf-litter substrate suggest foraging near the bottom and among plant stems rather than open-water feeding.
Mating
Like all barbs, Pethia striata is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courtship follows the typical cyprinid pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released simultaneously in a brief press. No pair bond is formed beyond the act of spawning, and no territory is held.
In the cool, clear streams of the Western Ghats, spawning likely peaks during or after the monsoon rains, when flows rise and water temperatures shift. Eggs are adhesive and fall among plant stems, leaf litter and the streambed substrate, where they receive no further attention from the adults.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Pethia striata are documented in the available literature, which reflects the species' status as a narrow endemic rarely if ever seen in the ornamental trade. The reproductive biology of the species is inferred from its membership in a well-characterised group of egg-scattering cyprinids.
As with related Pethia and small Western Ghats barbs, breeding would be expected to involve the scattering of adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, aquatic moss, leaf litter or gravel, with no nest construction, no spawning site defence, and no parental care whatsoever. Adults would eat any accessible eggs after spawning. In an aquarium context, a separate spawning vessel with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop — with adults removed after spawning — would be the standard approach used for similar congeners.
In the aquarium
Pethia striata is not established in the ornamental fish trade. As a narrow endemic from a protected national park in the Western Ghats, wild-caught specimens are not legally commercially available, and no captive breeding programme appears to have been documented in the hobby literature.
Should the species ever become available through conservation-sanctioned breeding efforts, its water requirements — soft, near-neutral water around 77–79 °F (77–79 °F), good oxygenation and moderate current — mirror those of other Western Ghats Pethia kept by specialist hobbyists. Its very small size (max 1.5 in SL) would suit a species-only or quiet community aquarium with live or fine-leaved plants and a dark substrate that shows off its lateral stripe. The fin-nipping tendency associated with larger, more active barbs is not characteristic of the genus Pethia.
Conservation
Pethia striata is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. The principal basis for this status is the species' extremely restricted range: all known records come from within the Tunga River basin inside Kudremukh National Park, Karnataka, an area falling within the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. Even within protected boundaries, Western Ghats freshwater species face ongoing pressures from upstream land-use change, plantation forestry that alters riparian hydrology, invasive species, and the longer-term effects of climate-driven changes to monsoon rainfall patterns.
The Western Ghats are recognised as one of the world's most important centres of freshwater fish endemism, with a high proportion of species having ranges of only a single river basin or stream system. Atkore et al.'s landscape-scale study of fish diversity and turnover in the region underlines the conservation significance of site-specific endemics like P. striata, whose persistence is tied directly to the integrity of a single protected watershed. Continued protection of Kudremukh National Park and its catchment hydrology is the most important conservation action for this species.
