Poropuntius speleops is a small, cave-dwelling cyprinid known from a single underground stream system in northeastern Thailand — one of the very few members of the genus Poropuntius adapted to subterranean life. Described in 1991 from Tham Phu Khieo cave in Chaiyaphum Province, it reaches barely 2.5 in standard length and lives in the perpetual darkness of a cave stream that floods dramatically during the monsoon. The population is small, geographically pinned to a single locality, and classed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List; it faces pressure from collection for food and the aquarium trade as well as the broader agricultural pollution risk that hangs over its karstic watershed.

Taxonomy & naming

Poropuntius speleops was described by Tyson R. Roberts in 1991, originally placed in the genus Barbus (as Barbus speleops Roberts, 1991). It was subsequently transferred to Puntius, the broad catch-all genus that housed the majority of South and Southeast Asian barbs through the twentieth century, and was known in that literature as Puntius speleops (Roberts, 1991). Under the current classification accepted by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the valid combination is Poropuntius speleops (Roberts, 1991), with the parenthetical authority marking the shift out of Roberts's original genus assignment.

Poropuntius is a genus of medium to large Asian barbs distributed across mainland Southeast Asia and southern China. P. speleops stands out as the only confirmed cave-adapted member of the genus — a troglobitic fish in a group otherwise entirely composed of surface-river inhabitants. This makes it of considerable interest to both ichthyologists and subterranean biology researchers. No subspecies or geographical variants are recognised.

Morphology

Poropuntius speleops is a slender, moderately compressed cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded size of 2.5 in standard length (SL), with the holotype measuring 5 in SL — indicating a larger maximum size in the wild than FishBase's general figure may suggest for typical adult specimens. The body is elongated compared with many surface barbs, consistent with the crevice-navigating demands of cave stream life.

As a troglobitic species, P. speleops shows reductions in eye size and pigmentation typical of cave-adapted fishes, though the degree of troglomorphism and detailed morphological descriptions from the original 1991 account remain the primary record. Data on fin counts, lateral-line scale counts, and full meristic detail are sparse in the widely accessible secondary literature beyond the type description.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Tham Phu Khieo cave system (16°02'05"N, 101°32'10"E), located within the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary in Chaiyaphum Province, northeastern Thailand. This places it in the Mekong basin drainage of the Khorat Plateau. It is the only barb in the Poropuntius genus recorded from a wholly subterranean environment, occupying the underground stream that flows through the cave.

The cave stream is subject to major flooding during the rainy season, a hydrological feature that likely shapes the biology and ecology of all resident fauna. The habitat is classified as benthopelagic freshwater. Temperature and chemistry data specific to Tham Phu Khieo's stream are not well documented in the accessible literature, but the tropical karst setting of northeastern Thailand suggests warm, mineral-rich water consistent with limestone dissolution — generally harder and with higher pH than the soft blackwater habitats of Sundaland lowland barbs.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Poropuntius speleops in the wild are sparse. Cave-dwelling cyprinids typically subsist on organic detritus washed in by flooding, biofilms on rock surfaces, invertebrates carried into the cave by water flow, and the guano-supported invertebrate communities that develop in inhabited cave systems.

The monsoon flooding that characterises Tham Phu Khieo likely delivers periodic pulses of allochthonous organic material — leaf litter, soils, and small invertebrates — from the surface watershed, which would be the primary nutritional subsidy for the fish population during and after the wet season. No aquarium feeding observations or gut-content studies are reported in the accessible literature.

Mating

No direct observations of courtship behaviour in Poropuntius speleops have been published in accessible literature. As a cyprinid barb, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner typical of the family. In related surface-dwelling barbs, a driving male pursues a gravid female and the pair release eggs and milt in close contact over the substrate or among available cover, with no pair bond and no parental involvement following spawning.

The cave environment constrains the substrate and spatial options available: the rock and gravel floor of the cave stream, and any fine debris accumulated there, would serve as the egg-deposition site. The monsoon flood cycle likely plays a role in triggering reproductive condition, as in many seasonal Southeast Asian cyprinids, though this remains unconfirmed for this species.

Breeding

Poropuntius speleops is not known to have been bred in captivity, and no aquarium breeding accounts appear in the accessible literature. Based on cyprinid biology, it would be expected to scatter non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs over the substrate with no nest construction and no parental care of any kind — adults would not guard eggs or larvae, and cannibalism of the spawn by the parents cannot be excluded.

The single-locality, small-population nature of the species makes collection for captive breeding programmes a conservation concern rather than an opportunity; the Subterranean Fishes of the World assessment notes that harvest for the aquarium trade is one of the pressures on the wild population. Any captive study would need to be conducted with extreme care given the fragility of the only known population.

In the aquarium

Poropuntius speleops is not a standard aquarium fish and is not commercially available through the ornamental trade in any meaningful sense. Specimens have occasionally entered the trade through collection from the wild, which the IUCN assessment flags as a contributing threat to the population.

Given its cave origins, any captive specimens would require low light or darkness, stable water quality, and a diet of sinking foods — animal protein, frozen or live invertebrates, and high-quality prepared foods. Without established husbandry protocols or any captive-breeding stock, this species is not suitable for the general hobby and its collection from the wild is ethically indefensible given the population's vulnerability and single-locality restriction.

Conservation

Poropuntius speleops is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 on the IUCN Red List, evaluated by Vidthayanon in 2011. The D2 criterion applies to species with a very restricted area of occupancy — in this case a single cave location — such that a plausible future threat could push the species to Critically Endangered or Extinct in a very short time. The population is reported as currently stable, but the single-locality restriction leaves it acutely exposed to any degradation of Tham Phu Khieo cave.

The Subterranean Fishes of the World assessment identifies two direct pressures: occasional collection of fish for local food consumption and collection for the aquarium trade. Agricultural pollution from the surrounding watershed in Chaiyaphum Province represents a broader environmental risk — chemicals and sediment entering the karst groundwater system could reach the cave stream and impact the fish population. The Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary designation provides formal protection to the locality, but enforcement against opportunistic collection and the more diffuse agricultural pressure on water quality are ongoing concerns for this highly endemic species.
