Taxonomy & naming
Puntius crescentus was described by G. M. Yazdani and H. S. Singh in 1994 from material collected in south India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Puntius crescentus (Yazdani & Singh, 1994), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally described in a different genus before being placed in Puntius.
The old genus Puntius was a broad repository for South and Southeast Asian barbs for much of the twentieth century. The 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda and colleagues split that assemblage into multiple genera — Pethia, Systomus, Dawkinsia, Haludaria, and others — reserving Puntius sensu stricto for a tighter assemblage of peninsular Indian species. Puntius crescentus falls within that revised, restricted Puntius and so retains the genus name under the current treatment. It belongs to a guild of small, stream-dwelling barbs endemic to the Western Ghats, a range that includes numerous species of conservation concern.
Morphology
Published data on the external appearance of Puntius crescentus are sparse. The original description notes that the head is relatively long, measuring approximately one quarter of the standard length, which places it among the longer-headed members of the Indian Puntius assemblage. The species is a benthopelagic fish characteristic of the small-to-medium hill-stream barbs of the peninsula.
Beyond head proportions and the pharyngeal tooth formula noted in the primary literature, detailed morphometric and colour data have not been widely reproduced. Until a full redescription with photographic documentation is published, the species should be treated as data-sparse on meristics and external appearance.
Habitat
Puntius crescentus is a freshwater, benthopelagic species restricted to running waters of the Western Ghats, the narrow mountain chain running along the west coast of peninsular India. Western Ghats streams typically flow fast and clear over rocky and sandy substrates, with water that is well oxygenated, near-neutral to slightly acidic, and seasonally responsive to the monsoon.
The region experiences marked wet and dry seasons driven by the southwest monsoon; stream flows, temperatures, and turbidity fluctuate accordingly. Many small barbs of the Western Ghats occupy fast riffles and pool-to-riffle transitions where current keeps dissolved oxygen high. Precise habitat data for P. crescentus within the Ghats are not published in widely available sources, but the ecology of congeners in the same region provides the most reliable framework for inference.
Feeding
FishBase classifies Puntius crescentus as a benthos feeder, consistent with the ecology of small Indian Puntius species that forage along stream bottoms for insect larvae, small invertebrates, algal films, and fine organic detritus. The relatively long head noted in the original description may reflect adaptation to probing rocky substrates.
Detailed dietary studies specific to this species have not been published in the accessible literature. Its feeding niche is inferred by analogy with sympatric Western Ghats congeners, which are predominantly bottom-associated opportunistic omnivores in fast-flowing streams.
Mating
Like all barbs, Puntius crescentus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No barb builds a nest, broods eggs in the mouth, or defends offspring; the reproductive mode across the family is scatter-and-abandon. In stream-dwelling Indian species, spawning is typically seasonal, keyed to monsoon hydrology and rising water temperatures at the onset of the wet season.
A driving male pursues a gravid female over the substrate or among fine-leaved vegetation and submerged detritus, pressing alongside her briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. No pair bond forms. Adults give no parental care and will consume scattered eggs if the opportunity arises.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding records for Puntius crescentus appear in the accessible hobby or scientific literature, reflecting how rarely this Endangered Western Ghats endemic reaches the trade. In principle the breeding approach for congeners applies: a separate breeding vessel with soft, slightly acidic water, a fine-leaved plant mass or spawning mop, and conditioning on live and frozen foods should induce scatter-spawning if adult fish can be obtained.
Adhesive eggs would be expected to fall among plants or onto the substrate; adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Larvae typically become free-swimming within a few days at tropical room temperatures and are started on infusoria before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' Endangered status, any successful captive reproduction would carry real conservation significance, but established protocols specifically for P. crescentus do not yet exist in the public record.

Puntius crescentus is not an established aquarium fish. It is absent from mainstream trade catalogues and has no significant presence in the hobby literature, a situation consistent with its narrow endemic range and Endangered status in the wild. The few references to it outside the primary description arise in conservation checklists rather than fishkeeping sources.
For aquarists who might encounter it through scientific collection or specialist exchange, the ecology of its Western Ghats habitat suggests cool, well-oxygenated, fast-moving water with soft to moderately hard chemistry and a near-neutral pH, reflecting the montane stream conditions of the region. Keeping it alongside peaceful, similarly sized congeners from comparable habitats would be appropriate. Any such holding should be subject to the legal frameworks governing collection of Endangered taxa.
Conservation
Puntius crescentus is assessed as Endangered (EN, criterion B1ab(iii)) on the IUCN Red List, with the evaluation dated 29 August 2010. The criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with continuing decline in the quality and extent of its freshwater habitat. It is confirmed as a Western Ghats endemic, listed in compilations of India's endemic fauna as one of the region's threatened freshwater species.
The Western Ghats are among the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots and support hundreds of endemic freshwater fish species, many of them under severe pressure. Threats across the region include conversion of riparian lands to agriculture, dam construction that alters flow regimes and fragments populations, groundwater extraction that reduces dry-season base flows, and pollution from agricultural run-off and domestic waste. The narrow range of Puntius crescentus — likely confined to one or a few river drainages — means that localised habitat degradation can affect the entire known population. No active conservation programme specifically targeting this species is documented in the accessible literature.
