Taxonomy & naming
Puntius deccanensis was described by G. M. Yazdani and M. Babu Rao in 1976 from specimens collected at a nalla (seasonal drainage channel) near Katraj Tank, Poona (now Pune), Maharashtra, India. The name deccanensis refers directly to the Deccan Plateau, the broad elevated plateau of peninsular India in which Pune sits.
The species belongs to the genus Puntius as delimited after the major revision by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012), which broke up the old sprawling Puntius into a series of better-supported genera including Pethia, Dawkinsia, Sahyadria and others. Puntius sensu stricto was retained for a handful of South Asian species, of which P. deccanensis is one. Under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) the current valid combination remains Puntius deccanensis (Yazdani & Babu Rao, 1976), with the parenthetical authority indicating the original description used a different generic placement.
Morphology
Puntius deccanensis is a small barb: FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for male or unsexed specimens. It is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of the body form typical of Indian hill-stream barbs — moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed, with the small mouth and forked tail characteristic of the genus.
Detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. The original description by Yazdani and Babu Rao provides the diagnostic characters distinguishing it from contemporary congeners in the Western Ghats fauna, but that paper has not been widely reproduced in secondary sources. Available data from aggregators confirm only the small size and the species' placement within Puntius on meristic and morphological grounds.
Habitat
The type locality is a nalla near Katraj Tank, Poona (Pune), Maharashtra — a small seasonal or intermittent drainage channel on the northern fringe of the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats form the western escarpment of peninsular India, and streams draining the Pune district are part of the upper catchment of rivers flowing east onto the Deccan Plateau, characterised by seasonally variable flow, moderate gradients and historically clear, near-neutral to slightly alkaline water.
Beyond the type locality, confirmed habitat records are absent from the literature accessible to secondary sources. The species is listed as endemic to the Northern Western Ghats of India. Given its hill-stream affinity and the ecology of comparable small Puntius from the region, it likely favoured shallow, clear, well-oxygenated water over sand, gravel or rock in areas with riparian cover — conditions that have been heavily degraded across the Pune urban fringe.
Feeding
No specific diet studies have been published for Puntius deccanensis. Small omnivory is the norm across Puntius and allied genera in the Indian subcontinent: feeding on small aquatic invertebrates including insect larvae, crustaceans and worms, supplemented by algal films, plant material and detritus picked from the substrate and water column.
The feeding ecology of this species in its restricted nalla habitat remains undescribed. Given the agricultural and peri-urban context of the Pune watershed, the natural food base has likely changed substantially since the species was first collected.
Mating
Like all barbs, Puntius deccanensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Barbs hold no lasting pair bond and build no nest; courtship consists of a male pursuing and driving a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate until eggs and milt are released together. No territory is defended beyond the brief act of spawning.
No courtship or reproductive behaviour observations have been published for this species. The seasonal hydrology of its nalla habitat suggests spawning may be linked to the monsoon, when flow and water quality improve and the waterbody expands — a pattern seen in other small Western Ghats cyprinids.
Breeding
Puntius deccanensis has not been bred in captivity in any published account. As with other small egg-scattering Puntius from the Western Ghats, the expected reproductive pattern would be adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, submerged roots or gravel, with neither parent providing any care and adults likely consuming eggs if given the opportunity. Fecundity, incubation time and larval development remain undocumented.
The species' Critically Endangered status and unknown current population make captive-breeding conservation programmes a theoretical priority, but no such programme has been documented in accessible sources.
In the aquarium
Puntius deccanensis is not known in the aquarium trade and has never been maintained as an ornamental species in any documented programme. Its extreme rarity in the wild, restricted type locality in a heavily urbanised watershed, and Critically Endangered status place it far outside the scope of normal fishkeeping.
For aquarists interested in comparable small Indian barbs from the Western Ghats, better-documented congeners and related species in genera such as Pethia offer a more appropriate choice, supporting captive populations without drawing on wild stock of threatened species.
Conservation
Puntius deccanensis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The species is endemic to the Northern Western Ghats of India, known from the Pune district in Maharashtra, and its range is one of the most restricted of any freshwater fish in the subcontinent. The type locality — a nalla near Katraj Tank — lies within the rapidly expanding urban footprint of Pune, one of India's fastest-growing cities.
Threats to the species centre on severe habitat loss and degradation: drainage of seasonal waterbodies, pollution from agricultural runoff and urban effluent, groundwater extraction reducing base flow in small streams, and encroachment on riparian buffers. The India Biodiversity Portal records the species for the Western Ghats but notes no confirmed observations from recent decades, raising the possibility that the population has declined to very low numbers or been extirpated from accessible localities. Its extreme endemism, small population, and the scale of anthropogenic pressure on the Pune watershed make recovery prospects uncertain without targeted survey work and habitat protection.
