Taxonomy & naming
Puntius dorsalis was described by Thomas Claverhill Jerdon in 1849. The parenthetical authority in the name — (Jerdon, 1849) — marks its transfer out of Jerdon's original genus to the current combination Puntius. In the taxonomy of South Asian barbs, the genus Puntius has undergone considerable revision: Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012) split the old catch-all Puntius into several new and resurrected genera, transferring many Indian and Sri Lankan species to Pethia, Systomus, Dawkinsia, and others. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer), the authority for valid names followed here, retains Puntius dorsalis in Puntius.
The specific epithet dorsalis is Latin, meaning "of the back" or "dorsal", a reference to a dorsal feature noted by the describer — likely the prominent dorsal fin or coloration along the back. The species is sometimes encountered in older literature under the genus Barbus or as Barbus dorsalis.
Morphology
Puntius dorsalis is a large barb by the standards of its genus, with a recorded maximum total length of 10 in, though common specimens in the field run considerably smaller — around 5–5.5 in TL. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, with the longer snout that gives rise to its vernacular name. Fin ray counts recorded by FishBase are 11 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays.
