Puntius euspilurus, the slim barb, is a slender-bodied freshwater cyprinid described by Plamoottil in 2016 from the highland water bodies of Wayanad, a forested district in the Western Ghats of Kerala, India. Distinguished from its congeners by a proportionally narrow body and a distinct black spot at the base of the caudal fin — the feature that inspired its species name — it is endemic to unpolluted, rapidly flowing streams in one of South Asia's most ecologically rich but increasingly pressured highland landscapes. Though barely known in the aquarium hobby, it represents a thread in the intricate web of barb diversity that characterises the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot where dozens of small cyprinids occupy narrow, stream-specific niches.

Taxonomy & naming

Puntius euspilurus was formally described by Mathews Plamoottil in 2016 in the International Journal of Research Studies in Biosciences (volume 4, issue 9, pages 1–6), based on specimens collected from Wayanad, Kerala, India. The valid combination is Puntius euspilurus (Plamoottil, 2016), with the parenthetical authority indicating the original genus assignment has been retained under current usage — the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.

The old genus Puntius was long used as a catch-all for barbs across Asia, but a landmark revision by Pethiyagoda et al. in 2012 split it into several well-supported genera. Some South Indian and Sri Lankan species were reassigned to Pethia, Systomus, and other newly erected genera; however, a core group — including this species — remained in a narrowly circumscribed Puntius. The Nova Taxa blog noted a possible morphological similarity to Puntius mahecola, another small barb from the Western Ghats, but Plamoottil distinguished the new species on the basis of body proportions and coloration.

Morphology

Puntius euspilurus has a distinctly slender body — its common name, the slim barb, reflects this directly. Body depth is 23.8–26.3% of standard length, which is shallower than many congeners. The fish reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The dorsal fin carries 8 soft rays and the anal fin 5 soft rays; lateral line scale count is 23–24.

The species' defining character is a conspicuous black blotch at the base of the caudal fin, which informs both the etymology and the visual identity of the fish. Beyond this basal caudal spot, detailed coloration data from the type description are not widely available in accessible literature, and claims about additional patterning should be treated with caution pending closer study of the type series.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Wayanad region of Kerala in the southern Western Ghats, occurring in rapidly flowing, shallow, clear-water streams. FishBase records it as a fish of clean, well-oxygenated upland waters — it appears to be restricted to areas of low anthropogenic impact, and FishBase notes it is found only in unpolluted localities.

The Wayanad plateau sits at elevations between roughly 700 and 2,100 metres and drains into both the west-flowing rivers that reach the Arabian Sea and the east-flowing tributaries of the Kaveri system. The upland streams where this barb occurs are characterised by fast current, rocky or gravelly substrates, and cool, near-neutral to slightly acidic water typical of monsoon-fed hill streams in the region. During the monsoon the species has been observed to range into paddy field margins alongside the permanent streams.

Feeding

No published dietary study exists for Puntius euspilurus specifically. By analogy with closely related small Puntius species from the Western Ghats — and consistent with the trophic ecology of small rheophilic cyprinids generally — the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore, taking benthic invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms, along with algal films scraped from rock surfaces and fine organic detritus.

Its preference for fast-flowing, clean-water habitats with hard substrates suggests it feeds primarily in the benthos, gleaning items dislodged by current rather than actively hunting in open water. In an aquarium setting, small live and frozen invertebrates alongside quality sinking pellets and spirulina-based foods would replicate the breadth of its presumed wild diet.

Mating

No spawning observations of Puntius euspilurus in the wild or in captivity have been published. As a member of the barb subfamily Barbinae and the genus Puntius, it is expected to reproduce by egg-scattering without parental care — the reproductive strategy universal in the group.

In related small Puntius species from similar fast-water environments, courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released in brief spawning rushes. No pair bond is formed, no territory is defended beyond the moment of spawning, and no nest is constructed.

Breeding

Puntius euspilurus has not been bred in captivity, or at least no account exists in the accessible literature. Based on its biology as a small stream barb, spawning would be expected to involve the scattering of adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, among root masses, or directly onto clean gravel — habitats that mirror the rocky, fast-water streams it occupies in Wayanad.

Adults give no parental care and would likely consume their own eggs if not separated. For any keeper fortunate enough to obtain wild specimens — which remains unlikely given the species' obscurity in trade — a cool, well-oxygenated spawning tank with a gentle current, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate grid to protect eggs from predation would be the logical starting setup, following the general approach used for related Indian hill-stream barbs.

In the aquarium

Puntius euspilurus is virtually unknown in the ornamental trade. Described only in 2016, endemic to a single highland district in Kerala, and documented as sensitive to water quality, it has not entered the hobby in any meaningful way and is unlikely to appear in mainstream retail. Any future interest would require specimens sourced through specialist or scientific channels.

If ever kept, the species' known ecology — clear, fast-flowing, cool, unpolluted hill streams — points firmly toward a well-oxygenated, current-rich aquarium with cool water temperatures, a neutral to slightly acidic pH, and scrupulously maintained quality. Its slender body and preference for clean water suggest it would not thrive in warm, sluggish, or enriched conditions. It should be kept as a shoal, consistent with the gregarious habits of most small barbs.

Conservation

Puntius euspilurus has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it is listed as Not Evaluated (NE), likely because it was described only in 2016 and assessments for very recently described species often lag several years behind publication.

However, the species' known biology and geography raise conservation concerns worth noting. It is endemic to Wayanad, a district in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot where agricultural expansion (particularly coffee, tea, and spice plantations), irrigation extraction, and chemical runoff from paddy cultivation are well-documented pressures on freshwater habitats. The species' apparent intolerance of pollution and its restriction to clean upland streams makes it a potentially good indicator of ecosystem health — and a species that could quietly disappear before any formal assessment is completed. The Western Ghats as a whole harbour dozens of stream-endemic barbs, many of which share this profile of narrow range combined with shrinking, degraded habitat.
