Puntius madhusoodani is a small, stream-dwelling barb endemic to the Manimala River in Kerala, southern India — one of the dozens of narrow-range cyprinids that make the Western Ghats one of the world's freshwater biodiversity hotspots. Described formally in 2012 by Krishnakumar, Benno Pereira and Radhakrishnan, it belongs to the residual genus Puntius after the sweeping Pethiyagoda et al. taxonomic revision that split most Indian barbs into new genera. Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, it faces severe pressure from dam construction and water extraction within its single known river system, and it remains essentially unknown in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Puntius madhusoodani was described in 2012 by Krishnakumar, Benno Pereira and Radhakrishnan in the journal Biosystematica (volume 5, issue 2), based on specimens collected from the Manimala River in Kerala, South India. The species was placed in Puntius, the genus that after the landmark 2012 revision by Pethiyagoda and colleagues now serves as a slimmed-down residual group for peninsular Indian barbs not reassigned to Pethia, Dawkinsia, Haludaria, or other newly erected genera. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Puntius madhusoodani (Krishnakumar, Benno Pereira & Radhakrishnan, 2012).

The species epithet honours Professor B. Madhusoodana Kurup, an ichthyologist at Cochin University of Science and Technology who has contributed substantially to the documentation of Kerala's freshwater fish fauna. The genus name Puntius derives from a South Asian vernacular name for small barbs that was Latinised in the early history of cyprinid classification.

Morphology

Puntius madhusoodani reaches a maximum standard length of 3.5 in, making it a moderate-sized member of its genus. The body is fusiform — elongate and streamlined rather than deep-bodied — an adaptation shared by many barbs that inhabit the flowing hill-stream stretches of the Western Ghats. One pair of short maxillary barbels is present, shorter than the diameter of the eye, a character that helps distinguish it from some congeners. The lateral line carries 25 to 26 scales. Dorsal fin soft rays number 10 and anal soft rays number 8.

Detailed colour descriptions from the original account and FishBase indicate a typical barb pattern, but the species remains poorly documented in living or photographic form outside the primary description, and further morphological particulars are data sparse in accessible literature.

Habitat

The species is known exclusively from the Manimala River system in Kerala, a mid-sized river that drains the southern flanks of the Western Ghats before flowing westward to the Arabian Sea. Western Ghats hill-stream barbs of this type typically occupy fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, clear-water reaches with rocky or gravelly substrates at moderate to higher elevations, where temperatures remain cooler and more stable than in lowland rivers.

FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and tropical, consistent with a fish that forages near the bottom and in the lower water column of hill streams. The Practical Fishkeeping notes on this group point to a preference for cool, clear, well-oxygenated conditions typical of Western Ghats hill-stream habitats, with water temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F and broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH. Precise in-situ measurements for the Manimala River are not recorded in available sources.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Puntius madhusoodani a trophic level of 2.6, placing it at the lower end of the carnivore–omnivore spectrum and consistent with a diet anchored in small invertebrates, organic detritus, algal films and plant material gleaned from the substrate and rock surfaces of the stream bed. This feeding guild is typical of small barbs in Western Ghats streams, where benthic invertebrates, drifting insects and periphyton are the principal food resources.

No species-specific dietary study has been published in accessible literature; the general foraging ecology is inferred from the trophic-level estimate and from the ecology of closely related Puntius species in comparable hill-stream habitats.

Mating

Puntius madhusoodani, as a member of the family Cyprinidae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No species-specific reproductive observations have been published for this taxon, but the reproductive biology follows the pattern universal among barbs: there is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the spawning event itself, and no parental care of any kind. A driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together, with adhesive eggs settling among gravel, plant material or rock crevices.

In hill-stream barbs of the Western Ghats, spawning is commonly seasonal and linked to the onset of the monsoon, when rising water temperatures, increased flow and improved food availability trigger reproductive readiness. The species' extremely restricted range and Critically Endangered status mean that field observations of its reproductive behaviour are essentially absent from the published literature.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Puntius madhusoodani appear in the accessible aquarium or scientific literature, and the species is not known to be established in the trade. Based on the biology of closely related Indian barbs, aquarium breeding would follow the standard barb protocol: a shallow spawning tank with clean, slightly acidic to neutral soft water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop over a mesh or marble bottom, and a well-conditioned pair introduced in the evening. Eggs would be expected to hatch within 24–48 hours, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later and accepting infusoria and small live foods.

Adults would eat eggs and fry if not removed promptly — the defining characteristic of non-guarding egg-scatterers. Given the species' Critically Endangered status and its endemism to a single river system under threat, any captive population established from legally obtained specimens could carry conservation value; no such program is documented.

In the aquarium

Puntius madhusoodani is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially unavailable in the trade. Its small known range, Critically Endangered status and absence from hobbyist literature mean that virtually no practical aquarium data exist for the species beyond the general ecology inferred from its Western Ghats hill-stream habitat.

Should the species ever become available through a conservation-linked captive program, conditions analogous to other Western Ghats hill-stream barbs would be appropriate: cool (72–79 °F), well-oxygenated, lightly filtered water with a near-neutral pH and low to moderate hardness, a current-generating pump or powerhead, and a group of at least six individuals to support natural social behaviour. Its modest adult size of around 3.5 in SL would suit a medium-sized aquarium. Until proper captive-breeding programs or lawful collection for ex-situ conservation are established, this barb should be regarded as a species to protect in the wild, not to pursue for personal aquaria.

Conservation

Puntius madhusoodani is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed by Neelesh Dahanukar in 2023. The B1a criterion reflects an extremely restricted extent of occurrence — the species is known only from the Manimala River in Kerala — while B1b confirms ongoing decline in habitat quality, and the b(iii) qualifier identifies continuing deterioration of habitat area, extent or quality as the principal driver.

The Manimala River, like many rivers draining the southern Western Ghats, faces severe pressure from dam construction, water extraction for irrigation and domestic use, sand mining, and encroachment on riparian vegetation. These threats reduce flow, elevate temperatures and degrade the well-oxygenated, clear-water substrate conditions on which the species depends. The narrowness of its range means that a single infrastructure project can affect the entire known population. No specific conservation measures targeting this species are documented in accessible sources, and its absence from the aquarium trade means that ex-situ assurance colonies do not exist.
