Taxonomy & naming
Puntius nangalensis was described by Jha in 1990. The current valid combination, Puntius nangalensis (Jha, 1990), is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names followed here. The parenthetical authority signals that the species was originally placed in a genus other than Puntius, though no older Barbus or Systomus combination for this species has been recovered from the published literature in searchable databases.
The broader genus Puntius underwent major revision in 2012 when Pethiyagoda and colleagues erected several new genera — Pethia, Systomus, Dawkinsia and others — to accommodate the diverse South Asian small-barb radiation formerly lumped in Puntius. Many Western Ghats species were moved at that time. Puntius nangalensis was retained in Puntius under the current Catalog of Fishes treatment, grouping it with a residual set of Indian and Sri Lankan barbs that the revision did not reassign. Anyone encountering the name in older literature should be aware that nomenclature in this group was in active flux through the 2010s.
The epithet nangalensis is a toponym, referring to the type locality area of Nangal or a water body of that name in the Western Ghats, following the standard practice of naming endemic taxa for their place of collection.
Morphology
No detailed published morphometric description of Puntius nangalensis has been recovered in accessible literature as of the assessment date. Puntius nangalensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is not available through normal trade channels. It is a conservation concern rather than a hobbyist subject: the narrow endemic range, Endangered IUCN status, and absence from any ornamental export record mean that aquarists are unlikely to encounter it.
Were the species ever maintained in a specialist or conservation setting, the appropriate approach would mirror that for other cool-water Western Ghats hill-stream barbs: well-filtered, highly oxygenated water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius (or cooler), near-neutral pH, and a furnished tank with current, rocky surfaces, and minimal competition. It is almost certainly a shoaling species that would benefit from conspecific company. Any such husbandry effort would best be framed within a conservation breeding programme coordinated with Indian freshwater conservation bodies.
Conservation
Puntius nangalensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), assessed on 28 March 2021. The criteria reflect a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, both small enough to trigger threshold concerns under the B-criterion, coupled with ongoing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat within the Western Ghats.
The Western Ghats are one of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots, and their freshwater systems face multiple simultaneous threats: hydroelectric dam construction and impoundment of hill rivers, large-scale water extraction for irrigation and urban supply, agricultural and plantation run-off, and encroachment of invasive species including other fish. Endemic species with small ranges — precisely the profile of P. nangalensis — are the most exposed to local extinction when any single water body or stream network is degraded, because there is no nearby refuge population to recolonise it.
The species is not known from captive populations, which removes one safety net available to many threatened freshwater fish. Effective conservation requires protection and management of the specific Western Ghats catchments where it occurs, and further survey work to clarify whether populations persist across its historic range or have already contracted.
