Taxonomy & naming
Puntius nelsoni was described by Mathew Plamoottil in 2014 in the International Journal of Fauna and Biological Studies, in a paper that simultaneously erected two further new species from Kerala — Systomus chryseus and S. rufus. The holotype, ZSI/WGRC/IR/2353, measures 3.5 in standard length and is deposited with the Western Ghats Regional Centre of the Zoological Survey of India.
The Catalog of Fishes recognises the species under Puntius, but some earlier and parallel literature placed it in the genus Systomus, which was applied broadly to larger, robust-bodied South Asian barbs before the nomenclature was clarified. The parenthetical authority (Plamoottil, 2014) signals that subsequent revisers moved it into the combination currently accepted. Hobbyists and regional fisheries workers may also encounter it under the Systomus combination in older checklists covering Kerala's freshwater fauna.
The species epithet honours Dr. Nelson P. Abraham, Associate Professor at St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry, Kerala, in recognition of his contributions to the study of the region's ichthyofauna.
Morphology
The Travancore yellow barb is a moderately sized barb with a holotype length of 3.5 in standard length, and FishBase records a maximum standard length of approximately 3.5 in. The original description notes a yellowish colouration over body and fins — the character that gives the species its common name — combined with a head that is proportionately deeper and a snout shorter and mouth wider than those of closely related Kerala congeners.
Beyond the diagnostic characters in Plamoottil's original account, detailed published morphometrics for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. The overall build is that of a typical medium-sized Puntius: moderately compressed, with the rounded profile and barbel-bearing mouth characteristic of the genus. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in the available literature, but as with many barbs a gravid female would be expected to show a noticeably fuller abdomen at spawning condition.
Habitat
The type locality is Kallumkal, at the confluence of the Pamba and Manimala rivers in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, in the southern Western Ghats. Both rivers drain the mid-elevation hills of Kerala and flow westward toward the Arabian Sea, passing through a mosaic of paddy land, coconut groves, and remnant riparian forest before entering the Vembanad backwater system.
No detailed habitat survey of this species has been published, but the Pamba and Manimala river systems at Kallumkal are lowland to mid-elevation rivers with relatively warm water, moderate current, and a mix of sandy, silty and rocky substrates. The Western Ghats as a whole receive very high seasonal rainfall, and many of the fish communities here experience strong monsoon flooding alternating with lower dry-season flows. Temperature data specific to the site are not in the current literature, but the lowland Kerala climate suggests warm tropical conditions through most of the year.
Feeding
No formal dietary study of Puntius nelsoni has been published. As a member of the genus Puntius in a typical river environment, it almost certainly functions as an opportunistic omnivore in the manner of related South Asian barbs — picking small invertebrates, algal films, fine organic detritus and fallen plant matter from the substrate and the water column.
In the aquarium, related Indian barbs of comparable size accept good-quality flake and micro-pellet foods readily, and their condition and colour benefit from supplementary live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp. Until a dedicated dietary study is conducted, care parameters for this species are best inferred from its ecology and from the husbandry literature on comparable Kerala river barbs.
Mating
Like all barbs, Puntius nelsoni is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No account of mating behaviour in the wild has been published for this species, but the reproductive biology of Puntius and related genera in similar Western Ghats rivers is well characterised: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the two pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are expelled.
There is no pair bond, no territory, and no parental care beyond the moment of spawning. Like many barbs, males are likely to be more intensely coloured and more active in the days preceding a spawn, competing with one another to court receptive females. The adhesive eggs fall among plants or onto the river bed, and the adults play no further role in their development.
Breeding
Reproductive biology specific to Puntius nelsoni has not been documented in the literature available at the time of writing. Based on the egg-scattering reproductive mode universal in barbs, females would scatter adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, or gravel, with no subsequent parental care — a pattern repeated across the Puntius assemblage of the Western Ghats.
If the species becomes available to hobbyists, a standard barb breeding setup would be appropriate: a separate shallow tank with slightly warm, near-neutral soft water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a substrate grid or fine net to protect the eggs from the adults, which should be removed after spawning. Larvae would be expected to become free-swimming within two to three days at tropical temperatures and can then be raised on infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Puntius nelsoni is not established in the aquarium trade at the time of writing and is known almost entirely from the scientific literature describing it. Its relatively large size for an Indian Puntius — up to around 3.5 in standard length — and its origin in the lowland Pamba–Manimala river system suggest it would suit a roomy aquarium with clean, well-oxygenated, near-neutral water and moderate current, analogous to the conditions offered to other mid-sized Kerala river barbs.
Should the species enter the trade, it would be best kept in a shoal of at least six individuals in the manner of all barbs, with active but peaceful companions of comparable size. Its restricted range and lack of IUCN assessment mean that any wild-caught specimens should be acquired with caution regarding the sourcing practices of the supplier.
Conservation
Puntius nelsoni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE) in FishBase (version 2025-2). The species is known only from Kallumkal at the confluence of the Pamba and Manimala rivers in Kerala, a point locality that suggests a naturally restricted distribution.
The Kerala Biodiversity Board has noted the species from this restricted site and flagged the potential vulnerability that comes with such a narrow endemic range. The rivers of lowland Kerala face pressure from agricultural runoff, sand mining, channelisation, and seasonal water extraction, all of which affect small-bodied fish communities. Until a formal range survey and population assessment are conducted, the conservation standing of this species remains uncertain. Its very recent description in 2014 means it has simply not yet entered the IUCN assessment queue rather than that it has been evaluated and found secure.
