Puntius ocellus was described by Plamoottil and Vineeth in 2020, published in the Egyptian Academic Journal of Biological Sciences (Zoology), volume 12, number 2. The type locality is a stream at Kasargod, in Kerala, India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the name as valid under the genus Puntius Hamilton, 1822.
The genus Puntius was once a vast catch-all for small South and Southeast Asian barbs, but Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) reorganised the group, erecting several new genera — Dawkinsia, Pethia, Systomus, and others — and restricting the name Puntius to a core set of peninsular Indian species sharing specific morphological characters. Puntius ocellus, described after that revision, was placed directly in the narrower Puntius and appears to represent a genuinely distinct species within that restricted assemblage.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 3.5 in for Puntius ocellus, placing it in the mid-size range for the Indian Puntius group. The species' most distinctive external feature is the ocellus on the caudal peduncle — a bold, rounded dark spot that resembles a second eye and from which the specific name is drawn. Beyond this defining mark, detailed morphological information in widely available literature is limited given the species' recent description.
As is typical for Indian small barbs, the body is likely laterally compressed and moderately deep, with the standard cyprinid build: a terminal or subterminal mouth, no adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin. The original description in the Egyptian Academic Journal of Biological Sciences would contain the full meristic and morphometric data, but that paper has not been broadly redistributed through secondary sources accessible at the time of this writing.
Habitat
The type locality for Puntius ocellus is a stream at Kasargod, a district in northern Kerala abutting the border with Karnataka. This region lies at the foot of the Western Ghats — a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot — where numerous short, fast-flowing rivers descend the western scarp to the Arabian Sea. Streams here are typically clear and well-oxygenated, running over laterite, rock, sand, and leaf litter through forest and agricultural land.
FishBase records the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, with a reference temperature of 77 °F and a pH of approximately 6.5, consistent with the moderately soft, near-neutral chemistry common in Kerala lowland streams. No additional field or ecological data have been published in widely accessible secondary literature.
Feeding
No published feeding data specific to Puntius ocellus are available in major databases. By analogy with closely related peninsular Indian Puntius species, the diet in the wild is most likely omnivorous, taking small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — along with algal films, detritus, and fallen organic matter picked from the substrate and current.
This foraging strategy is typical of small, benthic-associated barbs inhabiting fast-flowing hill streams, where a diverse, opportunistic diet is favoured by the variable food supply across seasons. Mating
Puntius ocellus, like all barbs, is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific observations of courtship or spawning have been published. In closely related Indian Puntius species, spawning is typically triggered by seasonal rains that raise water levels and flush the streams with cooler, well-oxygenated water, signalling reproductive readiness to the fish.
Courtship follows the pattern common to the family: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together as the pair make brief contact. No nest is constructed, no territory is maintained beyond the transient courtship chase, and there is no pair bond.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Puntius ocellus appear in published hobby or scientific literature, reflecting its status as a recently described and currently obscure species. Given the biology of its congeners, it would be expected to spawn in the manner standard for small Indian barbs: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants or over a clean substrate, hatching in one to two days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming within a few more days.
Parental care is absent — adults will consume eggs and larvae if not separated — and fecundity is likely moderate, consistent with a small barb of this body size. Captive breeding attempts, should aquarium specimens become available, would benefit from soft, slightly acidic water, a well-planted spawning vessel, and the removal of adults immediately after spawning.
In the aquarium
Puntius ocellus is not currently known in the aquarium trade; it was described in 2020 from a single stream locality in Kerala and has not appeared in hobbyist literature or online stocklists as of the time of writing. Its modest size (up to 3.5 in TL) and the clear, moderate-temperature streams it inhabits suggest it could adapt reasonably well to aquarium life, but this remains speculative.
If specimens were to become available, husbandry by analogy with similar Indian hill-stream barbs would call for a roomy, well-filtered aquarium with good water movement, temperatures in the mid-twenties Celsius, a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.5–7.0, and soft to moderately hard water. A varied diet of small prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates would be appropriate. Whether the species is gregarious or suited to a community context is unknown.
Conservation
Puntius ocellus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; it was described in 2020 and is currently Not Evaluated (NE). Its known range is extremely restricted — a single stream at Kasargod in Kerala — which, by itself, is a risk factor common to many Western Ghats endemic freshwater fishes.
The Western Ghats are under sustained pressure from agricultural conversion, plantation forestry, sand mining in river beds, dam construction, and the effects of changing rainfall patterns. Small, localised barbs adapted to the specific chemistry and flow regime of a single river system are particularly vulnerable to these impacts. A formal IUCN assessment would be a meaningful first step in understanding the species' status; until then, its restricted provenance warrants precautionary concern.
