Taxonomy & naming
Scaphognathops bandanensis was described by Boonyaratpalin and Srirungroj in 1971, placed in the genus Scaphognathops, which has been recognised for the large-jawed sharp-mouth barbs of mainland Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) carries Scaphognathops bandanensis Boonyaratpalin & Srirungroj, 1971 as the valid combination. The genus name alludes to the characteristic jaw shape that sets these fish apart from the broader Cyprinidae assemblage of the region.
The species belongs to a small genus of riverine barbs restricted to the Mekong and closely associated drainages of the Indochina Peninsula. It is not closely allied to the smaller Puntius-complex barbs that dominate the aquarium trade, and the recent revision of Southeast Asian cyprinids (which redistributed many former Puntius among Puntigrus, Pethia, Dawkinsia, and other genera) has not affected the placement of Scaphognathops, which was never assigned to Puntius.
Morphology
Scaphognathops bandanensis is a large, elongate, benthopelagic cyprinid reaching a maximum recorded size of 15.5 in standard length. The most diagnostic features are the wide mouth with a broad, massive lower jaw and rudimentary lower lips — an architecture suited to scraping and processing benthic material. The caudal fin is pale yellow-grey. The dorsal fin has 9 branched rays and the anal fin has 5 branched rays.
The body plan is that of a robust, actively swimming river fish rather than a compressed, shoaling barb. The pale, streamlined profile and broad jaw give the species a distinctive appearance among the Mekong barb fauna. Habitat
The species is potamodromous — it undertakes regular migrations within fresh water rather than between fresh and salt water. During the dry season adults congregate in the deep, slow-moving reaches of the main Mekong River channel; when the annual flood rises they migrate into smaller tributary streams and floodplain habitats. FishBase also records the species in rapid-running mountain streams, suggesting it uses a wide range of lotic environments across the seasonal cycle.
Flow is the key habitat cue. Feeding
Scaphognathops bandanensis is omnivorous, feeding on detritus, periphyton (attached algal films), worms, and insects. The broad lower jaw and rudimentary lips are consistent with a benthic scraping and picking strategy, allowing the fish to process organic material from substrates in both the main river and the floodplain habitats it occupies during the high-water season.
The species is marketed fresh and is of commercial importance in the Lower Mekong countries. No detailed gut-content studies are recorded in available sources, but the combination of periphyton, detritus, and invertebrates places it in the broad omnivore guild of large riverine cyprinids rather than a specialist predator or grazer.
Mating
Like other large riverine barbs, Scaphognathops bandanensis is a broadcast spawner that releases eggs and milt without constructing a nest or guarding the spawn. In the aquarium
Scaphognathops bandanensis is not an aquarium fish. Reaching 15.5 in SL, depending on seasonal migrations across the Mekong floodplain, and requiring the environmental cues of the annual flood pulse, it is wholly impractical for captive maintenance. The species is absent from the ornamental trade and is unlikely ever to enter it.
It appears in the aquarium literature only peripherally, as a Mekong species that illustrates the scale and ecological complexity of the riverine barb fauna — a counterpoint to the small, shoaling barbs that make up the bulk of the Asian barb hobby. Those interested in the Mekong cyprinid fauna are better served by conservation literature than by aquarium husbandry guides.
Conservation
