Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius lobocheiloides was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000. The genus Poropuntius belongs to the family Cyprinidae and groups a set of barb-like fishes from mainland Southeast Asia and southern China, distinguished in part by features of the lower jaw — in some species thickened or sharpened to facilitate rasping food from hard substrates. FishBase notes a thickened lower jaw with a sharp edge as a diagnostic feature of this species, a character echoed by the specific epithet.
A comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Poropuntius was published by Hoang et al. in 2024 (ZooKeys), updating species boundaries and distributions across the group. Poropuntius lobocheiloides is not available in the aquarium trade and is not kept in home aquaria. It is a Mekong basin endemic known only from a restricted area of southern Laos, listed as Endangered, and has no recorded captive-breeding history. It is therefore unknown in the hobby.
The species is of scientific rather than hobby interest, relevant primarily to ichthyologists studying Mekong cyprinid diversity and conservation biologists monitoring the threatened freshwater fauna of the Bolavens Plateau stream system.

Poropuntius lobocheiloides is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(i,iii,v), reflecting a restricted extent of occurrence, continuing decline in area of occupancy, extent and quality of habitat, and number of mature individuals. The species is endemic to the Xe Nam Noi within the Mekong basin in Laos — a single restricted river system on the Bolavens Plateau — making it highly vulnerable to any local deterioration of its habitat.
The Mekong River Commission lists P. lobocheiloides among key fish species of conservation concern in Lao PDR. Threats typical of the region include hydropower dam construction (which disrupts flow regimes and fragments fish populations in Mekong tributaries), deforestation on the Bolavens Plateau leading to siltation and altered stream hydrology, water extraction for agriculture, and general pollution. Its micro-endemic distribution means that a single significant disturbance in the Xe Nam Noi catchment could eliminate the species across its entire known range.
