Taxonomy & naming
Bagrus lubosicus was described by the Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg in 1924, based on material from the Lubozi River — a tributary of the Luala River in the lower Congo basin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, which also supplied the species epithet. It sits in the genus Bagrus, family Bagridae, a group of African bagrid catfishes that also includes the well-known B. docmak (silver catfish) and B. meridionalis (Lake Malawi's vundu).
The species' status is not fully settled: sources flag it as possibly synonymous with Bagrus ubangensis, and the Catalog of Fishes should be consulted for the current treatment of the name. Until that is resolved, this account follows Bagrus lubosicus as described, consistent with how it is still recorded in occurrence data such as GBIF.
Morphology
No dedicated morphological description or maximum-length figure could be confirmed for Bagrus lubosicus in the available sources — this is a genuinely obscure, Data Deficient species. What can be said comes from the genus: Bagrus catfishes share a broad, flattened head, a long scaleless body, an adipose fin, and prominent barbels used to hunt by touch and smell in murky or nocturnal conditions. Related congeners give a sense of scale rather than a confirmed figure for this species: B. docmak, B. meridionalis and B. filamentosus all reach roughly 21.5–59 in. Until species-specific data are published, B. lubosicus should be treated as a member of a genus of large-bodied predators rather than assumed to stay small.

In practice this means a nocturnal ambush predator that will take and swallow any tankmate it can fit in its mouth. Like other bagrids it is scaleless, which makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that snag in nets and can jab the keeper; move it in a container rather than netting it. As a nocturnal predator it should be housed with dense cover and, critically, only with tankmates too large to be swallowed — its diet is overwhelmingly other fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Bagrus lubosicus as Data Deficient in 2009. This reflects how little is known about the species: its distribution beyond the Lubozi River type locality, its population trends, and even its taxonomic distinctness from related Bagrus (it has been flagged as a possible synonym of B. ubangensis) all remain unresolved.
As a narrow-range Congo basin endemic known chiefly from one tributary system, it is potentially vulnerable to the same pressures affecting Congo basin freshwater fishes generally — deforestation, sedimentation, and artisanal fishing pressure — but no species-specific assessment of these threats exists. A formal taxonomic and field survey would be needed before its conservation status could be meaningfully updated.
