Taxonomy & naming
Synodontis notatus was described by the French ichthyologist Léon Vaillant in 1893. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — and to the large, diverse genus Synodontis, which spans well over a hundred species across the rivers and lakes of tropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Synodontis notatus as the valid combination.
The specific epithet notatus is Latin for 'marked' or 'spotted', a reference to the bold, dark lateral spot that characterises the species in life. Trade and hobbyist sources also list it as the one-spot squeaker, onespot catfish, and domino syno — all pointing to the same diagnostic blotch. The type locality is the Congo River basin, with specimens originating from Pool Malebo (formerly Stanley Pool) and tributaries including the Kasai and Ubangi drainages. It is therefore a Congo endemic, not to be confused with the Tanganyikan squeakers (S. multipunctatus, S. petricola) that need hard, alkaline rift-lake water.
Morphology
Synodontis notatus has the classic squeaker body plan: a broad, flattened head, a heavy thorax, three pairs of barbels (one long maxillary pair and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs), a prominent dorsal fin, and a deeply forked caudal fin. The ground colour is a warm buff or pale brown, and the most distinctive feature is a large, solid dark spot on the flank — usually one prominent blotch behind the pectoral fin insertion, from which the common name derives. The fins may carry faint dusky markings.
Maximum total length is reported at 10.5 in (FishBase) to 11 in (Seriously Fish), making this a medium-large Synodontis — not a species that stays small. Like all mochokids, the skin is entirely scaleless (naked), which is significant for medication. The leading rays of the dorsal and pectoral fins are hardened, serrated, and lock into an erect position when the fish is alarmed; glandular tissue at the base of these spines produces a protein toxin that causes pain and swelling comparable to a bee sting on puncture. The fish can also rasp the pectoral spine against the pectoral girdle to produce the squeaking sound that gives the family its common name.
Habitat
The one-spot squeaker is a Congo River basin specialist. Its native range spans the main Congo channel, Pool Malebo, and major tributaries including the Kasai and Ubangi, with the Chiloango coastal drainage also recorded (FishBase). The range falls largely within the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo.
The Congo basin is one of the largest river systems on Earth, characterised by warm, soft-to-moderate water with low to moderate hardness. Recorded water parameters are 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and a general hardness of approximately 4–15 °dH (FishBase) to 8–18 °H (Seriously Fish). This is a benthopelagic species that forages over and near the substrate in the river's main channels and seasonally flooded lateral areas; the flood plain is thought to be an important spawning environment in the wild. Cover in the form of submerged wood, undercut banks, and rocky shelves provides daytime resting habitat.
Feeding
Synodontis notatus is an omnivore and benthic opportunist. In its natural range it exploits the Congo's rich invertebrate fauna — insect larvae, small crustaceans, snails, and similar benthic prey — as well as plant and algal matter encountered while foraging along the bottom. Like most Synodontis, feeding activity peaks at dusk and after dark.
In the aquarium it is straightforward to feed. It accepts sinking pellets and wafers readily and takes most frozen and live foods including bloodworm, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworm. Offering some vegetable matter — peas, blanched cucumber, algae wafers — is appreciated and reflects the omnivorous wild diet. Because it is nocturnal, food should be added after the main lights go off, particularly in a community with more active daytime feeders that might otherwise out-compete it.
Mating
Very little is documented about the specific mating behaviour of Synodontis notatus in either the wild or in captivity. In the wild, Seriously Fish reports that the species spawns in seasonal flood areas, which is consistent with the wider pattern seen across many tropical African river fish — rising water levels and temperature cues trigger reproductive activity in laterally connected flood-plain habitats, where eggs are scattered over substrate with no persistent parental defence.
Unlike Synodontis multipunctatus, S. notatus shows no evidence of brood parasitism. It is not a cuckoo catfish. Sexing is not straightforward in this group; females tend to become noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid, while males may remain slimmer, but there is no strong external difference outside the breeding season. In the absence of captive-breeding reports, the aquarist should not assume that conventional pairing methods will produce results.
Breeding
Breeding Synodontis notatus in the aquarium is essentially unreported. Seriously Fish notes the species as an egg-scatterer that spawns over substrate in flooded areas during the rainy season, with no parental care by either sex — but this mode has not been replicated in captivity under aquarium conditions. Commercial supply comes from wild-collected Congo basin fish rather than captive production.
Keepers who wish to attempt breeding would need a large tank with soft, slightly acidic warm water, dim lighting, substantial hiding cover, and ideally a gradual temperature and rainfall simulation to mimic the seasonal cue. Even then, success cannot be guaranteed given the absence of documented captive spawns in the hobbyist or scientific literature. This is a species best enjoyed as a long-lived display animal rather than a breeding project.
In the aquarium
The one-spot squeaker is a rewarding but genuinely large catfish that demands a correspondingly large aquarium. Minimum recommended tank length is 47 in (around 48 inches), and given the adult size of 10–10.5 in this should be considered a floor rather than an ideal — a longer, wider footprint is better. Substrate should be soft sand or fine gravel to protect the delicate sensory barbels; coarse gravel abrades them over time and hampers the fish's foraging. Provide ample cover in the form of driftwood, bogwood, and rocky caves or PVC tubes; the fish will spend most daylight hours wedged in a refuge. Well-oxygenated water with moderate current suits it well, and an external canister filter is recommended to maintain the water quality that a large, meaty feeder requires. Subdued or blue-moon lighting during evening hours encourages natural foraging behaviour.
Two care points are non-negotiable. First, the skin is completely scaleless, making this species — like all mochokids — significantly more sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard aquarium treatments than scaled fish. If medication is required, use a half-dose protocol and monitor closely; this is the same caution that applies to loaches, puffers, and eels. Second, the dorsal and pectoral spines are locking, serrated, and venomous — they tangle immediately in a net and a jab causes genuine pain and swelling. Never use a net to move this fish; always transfer it in a lidded container or a solid cup. With those precautions in mind, S. notatus is peaceful toward fish too large to be considered food, hardy, and long-lived in well-maintained water.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Synodontis notatus as Least Concern in February 2009. The species is widespread through the Congo River basin and no major threats were identified at the time of assessment; the Congo basin population appears stable.
The trade in this species relies on wild-collected fish from the Congo drainage, as captive breeding is essentially unknown. The Congo basin faces ongoing pressures from subsistence and commercial fishing, habitat alteration around major population centres, and developing extractive industry in parts of its catchment, but S. notatus is not considered range-restricted or particularly vulnerable to these pressures at present. Its broad basin distribution provides a degree of resilience absent from the narrowly endemic single-river catfish of the same region.
