Chiloglanis micropogon is a tiny, rheophilic suckermouth catfish of the Congo basin, one of well over a hundred Chiloglanis species that cling to rock and rubble in fast-flowing African rivers with a sucker formed from modified lips and barbels. It barely reaches 2 in and never troubles a keeper's tank size, but its needs are the opposite of forgiving: strong current, clean well-oxygenated water and a naked, scaleless skin that demands careful, conservative dosing. It is a data-sparse species outside the primary ichthyological literature — a genuine river specialist rather than an established aquarium fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Chiloglanis micropogon was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1952. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the squeakers and upside-down catfishes of Africa — and to the genus Chiloglanis, the suckermouth catfishes, which the Mochokidae species registry lists among roughly 228 valid nominal members of the family, with Chiloglanis itself reaching its greatest diversity in the Congo River system.

The genus name Chiloglanis combines Greek roots referring to the lip and to catfishes generally, describing the group's defining trait: an oral sucker built from thickened, modified lips and barbels that lets these small catfish grip rock in fast current. The species epithet micropogon derives from Greek mikrós (small) and pṓgōn (beard), naming the short maxillary barbels, which are only about as long as the eye diameter — a diagnostic feature distinguishing it from longer-barbelled relatives in the genus.

Morphology

This is a small catfish, reaching a maximum recorded size of only about 2 in total length, among the smaller members of a genus that is itself made up of small, flattened rheophiles. The body is naked and scaleless, flattened along the head and ventral surface, and the mouth is modified into a sucking disc formed from the lips and barbels rather than functioning as a conventional catfish mouth — the adaptation that lets it hold station on rock faces in current that would sweep away most fish.

The maxillary barbels are short, roughly equal to the eye diameter, which is the character that gives the species its name and separates it from longer-barbelled congeners. As in other Chiloglanis and Mochokidae generally, the dorsal and pectoral fins carry sharp spines capable of causing wounds if the fish is handled carelessly. Sexual dimorphism is present: FishBase reports that males develop elongate anal and caudal fins along with an enlarged humeral process, features presumably tied to breeding condition rather than everyday identification.

Habitat

Chiloglanis micropogon is native to Central Africa, recorded from Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola. Its documented range spans the lower Congo River and its Kasai and Kwango tributaries, the Dja River, the Lualaba, the rapids at Wagenia Falls, and the Rungumba River, a tributary system reaching toward Lake Tanganyika in the DRC — a spread that places the species firmly in the fast-water reaches of the wider Congo basin rather than in still or slow habitats.

As a rheophilic species — a riffle-dweller — it lives clinging to rock and rubble substrates in swift, well-oxygenated current, the same kind of habitat exploited by many small Chiloglanis across tropical Africa. Specific published temperature and pH ranges for this species were not found in the sources consulted; care should extrapolate cautiously from the well-oxygenated, flowing Congo-basin rivers it inhabits rather than from softwater blackwater assumptions.

Feeding

Like other small Chiloglanis, C. micropogon is a nocturnal benthic grazer and micro-predator, working over rock surfaces in current to take algae, biofilm and small invertebrates rather than actively hunting in open water. The sucker-mouth is used as much for gripping the substrate against the flow as for feeding, and much foraging activity in this genus happens after dark.

No aquarium feeding data specific to this species were found in the cache; an aquarist attempting to keep it should expect to offer sinking foods, algae wafers and small live or frozen invertebrate foods after lights-out, following the pattern documented for the wider genus and family, and should not expect a fish adapted to constant biofilm grazing in current to thrive on an occasional pellet in still water.

Mating

FishBase describes the species as oviparous, egg-laying, with distinct pairing during breeding — meaning courtship and spawning involve a paired male and female rather than a diffuse group spawn. Beyond that note, no further detail on courtship behavior, spawning site selection or triggers was found in the cache; this is a data-sparse species with essentially no aquarium breeding record to draw on.

Breeding

No documented spawning mode, parental care pattern or aquarium breeding account for Chiloglanis micropogon was found in the sources consulted. Small rheophilic Chiloglanis are not established aquarium fish and are essentially unknown to have been bred in captivity; the little that is recorded (oviparous, paired spawning) points to a wild reproductive strategy rather than anything replicated in a tank. Prospective keepers should treat this as an unbred species and not expect to reproduce it at home.

In the aquarium

Chiloglanis micropogon stays small — to about 2 in total length — but that does not make it an easy or generalist community fish. It is a specialised rheophile that needs strong, well-oxygenated current and rock or rubble surfaces to grip and graze, conditions few standard community tanks provide; a powerhead or river-style flow setup and biofilm-encrusted hardscape are closer to what it actually needs than a placid planted tank.

As with essentially all catfish, the skin is naked and scaleless, so this species is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to many medications — dose conservatively, often at half strength, and treat only when necessary. It also carries the sharp dorsal and pectoral spines typical of Mochokidae, which can snag a net and jab the handler, so move it in a container rather than netting it directly. It is a nocturnal forager and appreciates rock cover to retreat into during the day. Given how little aquarium literature exists for this exact species (PlanetCatfish lists a care page but it could not be retrieved for this article), it should be regarded as a specialist's fish for a dedicated biotope river setup rather than a beginner catfish, despite its diminutive size.

Conservation

Chiloglanis micropogon has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is common among small, range-restricted rheophilic catfishes of the Congo basin, many of which remain data-sparse in the conservation literature even where their taxonomy is settled.

Its documented range — lower Congo tributaries, the Kasai, Kwango, Dja and Lualaba rivers, and a Tanganyika-adjacent tributary — sits within a basin facing pressure from damming, sedimentation and artisanal fishing in places, though no species-specific threat data were found. Given the reliance of rheophilic Chiloglanis on flowing, well-oxygenated rock habitat, changes to river hydrology anywhere in its range would be the plausible long-term concern even though no formal assessment exists.
