Taxonomy & naming
Clarias gabonensis was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1867. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large Old World group whose members share the accessory air-breathing organ that lets them survive in oxygen-poor water and, in some species, cross land between pools. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Clarias gabonensis as the valid name, with the genus placement unchanged since Günther's original description.
The genus name Clarias derives from a Latinised form referencing the fish's vivacity or liveliness out of water — an apt nod to its air-breathing habit. The species epithet gabonensis simply means "of Gabon", after the country on whose coastal rivers the species was first collected, though its range turns out to extend well beyond Gabon into the wider Congo and Lower Guinea drainages.
Morphology
Clarias gabonensis has the classic walking-catfish silhouette: an elongated, cylindrical body, a broad flattened head, and long dorsal and anal fins that run most of the length of the body without spines — the dorsal fin has no true spine at all. Four pairs of barbels around the mouth help it feel out food in murky or dark water. The skin is completely scaleless, smooth and mucus-covered, which is typical of the genus but also makes the species more sensitive to certain medications than a scaled fish.
Maximum recorded size is 14 in total length (FishBase), with some sources giving 12 in as an alternative maximum record — either way this is a genuinely large catfish, not the small juvenile it is often sold as. The pectoral fins carry a single robust, slightly curved spine that can be locked outward, a feature that snags in aquarium nets and can jab careless hands; this fish is best moved in a submerged container rather than netted.
Habitat
The species is native to central Africa, recorded from the Lower and Central Congo River system — including Lake Tumba and the Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool) — the Ubangui River, and the Lower Guinea coastal rivers of the Ogowe, Nyanga, Kouilou and Chiloango. It lives in rivers, lakes and seasonally flooded forest pools, and juveniles are commonly found sheltering in these temporary forest pools during the rainy season.
Water conditions across this range run warm and moderately soft to neutral, with FishBase and ScotCat both giving a temperature range of about 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5. This is not a rift-lake or hard-alkaline fish, but it is also not an extreme soft-acidic blackwater specialist — moderate, stable tropical river conditions suit it well.
Feeding
Clarias gabonensis is an opportunistic bottom forager rather than a strict piscivore, taking a broad diet of aquatic insect larvae — mayfly (Ephemeroptera), caddisfly (Trichoptera) and midge (Chironomidae) nymphs — along with other insect remains, sand incidentally ingested while foraging, and fish scales grazed or scavenged from other fish. This scale-eating habit is a reminder that it is an opportunist that will exploit whatever food source is available, including its tankmates.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, prawn and other meaty foods readily, and being a nocturnal forager it feeds most actively after the lights go out. Any tankmates must be too large for it to swallow or scale-nip; given its adult size this effectively rules out small or slow-moving fish sharing its tank long-term.
Mating
Clarias gabonensis breeds seasonally in the wild, spawning during the rainy season when rivers rise and flood into surrounding forest and floodplain pools — the same temporary pools where juveniles are later found sheltering. As in other large Clarias, spawning is tied to this seasonal flood pulse rather than to a fixed pair-bonding or nest-building ritual, and detailed accounts of courtship in this species are sparse in the literature.
In commercial and research settings, Clarias species of this size are almost always spawned by hormone induction (pituitary extract or synthetic analogues) rather than left to pair naturally, because the fish are too large and the natural cues too tied to seasonal flooding to reliably trigger in captivity.
Breeding
This is a large, commercially significant catfish genus, and Clarias gabonensis follows the pattern of its relatives: it is essentially not bred in the home aquarium. Where it is propagated at all, it is farmed or hormone-induced at commercial or research scale, exploiting the same seasonal flood-spawning biology described above, rather than through natural pairing in a display tank.
Home aquarists should not expect to breed this species. Between its eventual size, its lack of documented aquarium spawning, and the induced-spawning methods used commercially, Clarias gabonensis sits alongside other large walking cats, big pimelodids and shark catfishes as a species kept for display and grown out, not bred.
In the aquarium
Clarias gabonensis is a genuine size-trap species. It is frequently sold as an inexpensive juvenile a few centimetres long, but it grows to a real adult length of around 14 in — far too large for the great majority of home aquariums, and a fish that ultimately needs a large, heavily filtered tank or a pond-sized setup. Prospective keepers should plan for the adult, not the juvenile, before buying one.
Being scaleless, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to some other medications, so treatments should be dosed conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and eels. Its robust, lockable pectoral spines catch in nets and can jab the keeper, so it is safer to move in a container. As an air-breather with a suprabranchial organ, it needs regular access to the surface and tolerates lower dissolved oxygen than most fish, and it is mostly nocturnal, appreciating caves or cover to retreat into by day. Clarias species are notorious invasive fish outside their native range once released, so this catfish must never be released into local waterways.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias gabonensis as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2009. It is described as widespread across central Africa without major identified threats, occurring across multiple river systems in both the Congo basin and the Lower Guinea coastal rivers, which gives the species a broad enough range to buffer localised pressures.
As with many widespread central African river and floodplain fish, ongoing habitat pressures in the region — deforestation affecting floodplain forest pools, water quality changes and fishing pressure — are the general long-term concerns even where a formal reassessment has not been carried out since 2009.
