Taxonomy & naming
Lepthoplosternum pectorale was described by the British-Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1895 under the original combination Callichthys pectoralis, based on material from the Paraguay River. Over the following century the species was reshuffled between genus-level taxa common in the family Callichthyidae: it passed through Hoplosternum and was also cited as Callichthys pectorale before Roberto Reis's 1997 revision of the non-Corydoradinae Callichthyidae placed it in the genus Lepthoplosternum, which he erected to accommodate a cluster of small-bodied species with notably enlarged pectoral plates.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) accepts Lepthoplosternum pectorale (Boulenger, 1895) as the valid combination. The genus Lepthoplosternum belongs to the subfamily Callichthyinae within Callichthyidae, making this a close relative of the better-known Hoplosternum littorale and Megalechis thoracata rather than of the Corydoradinae cories that share the family. It should not be confused with those genera in the literature, where old synonymies can mislead.
Morphology
Like all callichthyid catfish, Lepthoplosternum pectorale is entirely encased in two lateral rows of overlapping bony scutes — there are no true scales. The body is elongate and somewhat cylindrical, with a broad, somewhat flattened head, a pair of maxillary barbels and a shorter pair of nasal barbels. The dorsal fin is tall and triangular; the adipose fin carries a stout spine. Most conspicuous are the pectoral fins, which are anchored by particularly heavy, serrated spines that can be locked erect — the character that gives the genus its name (pectorale, referring to the large pectoral plates).
Adult size is typically around 2.5 in standard length (SL). Some older references cite up to 5.5 in total length, a discrepancy that likely reflects different measurement conventions and possibly mislabelled congeners; Aquarium Glaser reports the genus reaching around 3 in TL at most, with sexual maturity at roughly 2 in TL. The colouration is generally a warm brown or olive-grey with faint darker mottling, the belly paler. Males in breeding condition develop noticeably thickened, yellow-orange pectoral spines — a useful, visible sexing cue.
Habitat
Lepthoplosternum pectorale is native to the Paraguay River basin spanning parts of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay — in particular the lowland Chaco region, a seasonally flooded alluvial plain with warm, often shallow, sometimes poorly oxygenated waters. This subtropical latitude means cooler temperatures than most tropical catfish encounter: the species tolerates and prefers a range of roughly 68–72 °F, well below the 79–82 °F of a typical Amazonian community tank.
Waters in the Chaco and upper Paraguay drainage can range widely in chemistry depending on season and locality, but the species is recorded across a broad pH window of approximately 5.8 to 7.8. Its obligate air-breathing habit — it periodically rises to gulp atmospheric oxygen — allows it to exploit seasonally stagnant, hypoxic pools and flooded grasslands that exclude purely gill-breathing fish, an ecological advantage shared with its close relatives in the Callichthyinae.
Feeding
Lepthoplosternum pectorale is a benthic omnivore, foraging along the bottom for invertebrates, organic detritus, microorganisms and small food items. In its native floodplain habitat it exploits the rich organic matter deposited in shallow seasonal pools and river margins.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of sinking foods: quality sinking pellets and wafers form a good staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, tubifex and brine shrimp. Because it is most active after dark, feeding at or after lights-out ensures it is not outcompeted by bolder diurnal tankmates. Small, regular feeds suit it better than infrequent large meals.
Mating
Lepthoplosternum pectorale follows the callichthyid breeding pattern: spawning is preceded by the male constructing a floating bubble-nest, typically anchored beneath a broad leaf, a floating plant or another surface structure at the waterline. The male blows a raft of mucus-bound bubbles and may incorporate plant material into the nest structure to give it stability.
Courting behaviour involves the male becoming noticeably more active and his pectoral spines developing a pronounced yellow-orange thickening that serves as a visual signal. Females, which are typically fuller-bodied than males, are enticed beneath the nest to deposit eggs. This approach-to-surface mating posture is familiar from the broader Callichthyinae and is a reliable sign that spawning is imminent.
Breeding
Once eggs are placed in the bubble-nest, the male takes sole responsibility for guarding and tending them, fanning the nest and replenishing bubbles to maintain oxygen levels. This is a genuinely home-breedable species: the bubble-nest strategy is predictable and the male's parental care increases fry survival without keeper intervention beyond providing suitable conditions.
Breeding is most readily triggered by a water temperature drop of a few degrees (mimicking seasonal cooling in the Chaco), combined with a slightly lowered water level and the introduction of floating cover such as broad leaves or floating cork bark for nest anchorage. Fry are small on hatching but accept microworms and finely crushed foods soon after becoming free-swimming. The male should be removed once the fry are free-swimming to prevent predation.
In the aquarium
Lepthoplosternum pectorale is a manageable, subtly rewarding catfish for a keeper who can provide its specific subtropical conditions. A tank of 15–20 US gal is adequate for a small group; soft substrate (fine sand or rounded gravel) suits the species' benthic habits and protects its delicate belly scutes. Driftwood, leaf litter and broad-leaved floating plants recreate the Chaco floodplain feel and give the fish daytime refuge, since it is largely nocturnal.
The most important keeper note is temperature: this is a subtropical, not tropical, fish. Sustained temperatures above 75 °F stress it; a range of 68–72 °F is ideal, making it compatible with other temperate or cool-tolerant species (such as Corydoras paleatus or C. aeneus from the same Paraná-Paraguay drainage) rather than with a warm Amazonian community. Because the scutes replace, but do not function identically to, scales, this fish should be treated as medication-sensitive: use half-doses of copper-based treatments and check any medication for catfish compatibility before dosing.
The locking pectoral spines are a real handling hazard — they readily tangle in a net mesh and the serrations can abrade skin. Always move this fish in a container or soft bag rather than a net. Finally, remember it is an obligate air-breather: the surface must be accessible, and a tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent escapes during its surface trips.
Conservation
Lepthoplosternum pectorale has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is currently Not Evaluated (NE). Its wide distribution across the Paraguay River basin — spanning Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay — and its tolerance of degraded, seasonal and low-oxygen habitats suggest it is not acutely threatened, but no formal population assessment has been published.
The Gran Chaco region faces ongoing pressure from agricultural conversion, water extraction and seasonal burning that affects floodplain connectivity. As an obligate air-breather adapted to ephemeral and hypoxic waters, Lepthoplosternum pectorale is among the more resilient members of its community, but drainage of seasonal wetlands and channelisation of floodplain rivers are the primary habitat-level concerns for the species over the long term.
