Taxonomy & naming
Leptodoras praelongus was described in 1956 by George S. Myers and Stanley H. Weitzman, based on material collected in 1925 by Carl Ternetz at the São Gabriel rapids on the Rio Negro, Brazil. The species was originally placed in the genus Hassar, as Hassar praelongus, and was later transferred to Leptodoras as taxonomic revision of the thorny catfishes (family Doradidae) clarified the genus boundaries; a taxonomic reassessment of Leptodoras confirmed the placement and documented type and additional specimens. The Catalog of Fishes treats Leptodoras praelongus as the currently valid combination.
The genus name Leptodoras combines the Greek leptos, "slender" or "thin", with Doras, the type genus of the family — a reference to the elongated, narrow-bodied build shared by the genus's roughly two dozen species. The specific epithet praelongus is Latin for "very long" or "exceedingly elongated", describing the drawn-out body and snout that set the species apart within an already slender-bodied genus.
Morphology
Leptodoras praelongus reaches about 5.5 in standard length, based on measured specimens (a holotype of 4.5 in SL and an additional specimen of 5.5 in SL). It has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of Leptodoras, with a long, conical snout fronted by a well-developed oral hood — a fleshy flap around the mouth used in probing sand and debris for food. Like other doradids it is scaleless, its flanks instead carrying a row of bony lateral scutes running from behind the head to the tail.
As in the rest of the family, the dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff, serrated spine that the fish can lock rigidly erect — a defence that catches in nets and can jab careless hands, so this is a fish to scoop with a container rather than a net. Doradid spines can also stridulate, rasping against the pectoral girdle to produce an audible sound (hence "talking catfish"), a trait documented across the family though not specifically measured in this species.
Habitat
The species is known from Brazil and Venezuela: the upper Rio Orinoco, the Rio Negro (including the São Gabriel rapids type locality), the Rio Tocantins, and stretches of the Rio Amazonas between the Rios Jutaí and Madeira, with an additional record from the Madeira basin. These are classic Rio Negro-type blackwater systems — tea-dark, tannin-stained rivers running over sand and rock — and the species is specifically associated with large river cataracts and rapids, favouring fast, well-oxygenated flow over quiet backwaters.
Blackwater habitat of this kind is characteristically soft and acidic to circumneutral, low in dissolved minerals, and warm year-round. Aquarium keepers should replicate a strong-flow, sandy-bottomed river reach rather than a still, planted community tank.
Feeding
Leptodoras praelongus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging the sand and debris of rapids after dark for aquatic invertebrates and organic matter, probing with its barbels and oral hood. Congeners such as Leptodoras linnelli show the same pattern — bottom-oriented, night-active foraging with little interest in the water column by day.
In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets, algae wafers, and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp readily once settled. Because it feeds mainly at night, food is best offered after lights-out so it is not out-competed by more assertive daytime tankmates.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Leptodoras praelongus, and breeding across the genus Leptodoras is essentially unreported in captivity. Wild reproduction presumably follows the seasonal cues typical of Amazonian blackwater fishes, tied to flood-pulse timing, but no specific account exists for this species.
Breeding
This species has not been bred in the home aquarium, and no captive-breeding reports exist for the genus Leptodoras as a whole — unlike the armoured callichthyid catfishes, which build bubble-nests and are routinely home-bred, thorny catfishes of this genus remain entirely wild-collected for the trade. Prospective keepers should not expect to spawn it; any aquarium specimens available come from wild harvest in Brazil or Venezuela rather than commercial propagation.
In the aquarium
Leptodoras praelongus stays modest for a doradid, at roughly 5.5 in, but it is a strong-current specialist that needs to be kept accordingly: a long tank with high flow, a fine sand substrate, and driftwood or rock to break the current and provide daytime cover, since it is nocturnal and shy by day. Water should be soft and acidic to neutral, replicating its blackwater origin — cache-sourced congener data suggests roughly pH 5.8–7.5, 1–25 dH, and 64–72 °F, cooler than many tropical community tanks and worth checking against a thermometer rather than assuming standard tropical temperatures.
Being scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; dose conservatively, often at half strength, as with loaches and other naked-skinned catfishes. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigidly and can snag in a net or jab a hand, so move it in a cup or container instead of netting it. It is reported as totally unaggressive and naturally schools, so it is best kept in a small group rather than alone, alongside other peaceful strong-current fish.
Conservation
Leptodoras praelongus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status (Not Evaluated). It is known from a handful of localities across a wide span of the upper Orinoco and middle Rio Negro/Amazon system, which suggests a broad if patchily documented range, but population trends and threats have not been studied.
As with many Rio Negro and upper Orinoco blackwater specialists, the main long-term pressures are likely to be habitat degradation from mining, deforestation and hydrological change in these river systems, along with collection for the ornamental trade, though no species-specific data exists to quantify either.
