Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius polyuranodon was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes of Asia's freshwater and brackish rivers, and sits in the genus Pangasius alongside well-known aquarium and food fishes such as the iridescent shark (P. hypophthalmus) and the giant Mekong catfish (P. gigas). The Catalog of Fishes treats Pangasius polyuranodon as the currently valid combination, and it has not moved between genera in the way some other catfish groups have been reshuffled.
The genus name Pangasius derives from a local Javanese/Indonesian vernacular name for these river catfish, latinised for scientific use. The species epithet polyuranodon is built from Greek roots and is generally read as referring to the fish's numerous ('poly-') teeth or dentition pattern along the jaws, a taxonomically useful character among the otherwise similar-looking Pangasius species. Because several Pangasius species are superficially alike as adults and are frequently confused as juveniles in the aquarium trade, positive identification often relies on fin-ray counts and dentition rather than colour alone.
Morphology
This is a large, laterally compressed, shark-shaped catfish: a streamlined silvery body, a deeply forked caudal fin, a tall pointed dorsal fin with a stiff leading spine, and long, sweeping pectoral and anal fins that give the fish its 'shark catfish' nickname. Two pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair and a shorter mandibular pair — extend from the mouth. Like all catfish it is naked-skinned rather than scaled, which has direct consequences for how it should be treated with aquarium medications (see 'In the aquarium').
FishBase records a maximum size of about 31.5 in standard length for this species, and individuals reported at or near that size are essentially unmanageable in any home aquarium. The stiff, serrated, locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins can snag and tear a net and jab an unwary handler, so larger individuals are best moved in a container rather than netted.
Habitat
Pangasius polyuranodon is potamodromous, meaning it undertakes freshwater migrations rather than moving to sea, and it occupies both lakes and rivers across its range. Adults are typically found in estuaries and the lower reaches of rivers, moving into the upper reaches during the rainy season, and the species is known to exploit seasonally flooded forest habitat when it becomes available. In the Mekong basin it is recorded as rare in the middle Mekong above the Khone Falls, with the main population found in southern Laos below the falls and through the Mekong Delta; spawning migration there is reported around May to August, coinciding with the flood pulse.
As a facultative air-breather, it can supplement gill respiration by gulping air at the surface, an adaptation useful in the warm, sometimes oxygen-poor floodplain and estuarine waters it inhabits. This combination of river, lake, floodplain and estuarine use across a wide geographic and seasonal range is part of why the species remains widespread despite intense fishing pressure on Southeast Asian rivers.
Feeding
Pangasius polyuranodon is omnivorous and opportunistic. FishBase describes an adaptable diet, and reporting from the Mekong notes that the species feeds on fruit and other food it can access when it moves into seasonally flooded forest — a genuinely varied, river-and-floodplain diet rather than a narrow prey specialism. As it grows, larger individuals are also capable of taking sizeable animal prey, in keeping with the general Pangasius pattern of shifting toward a broader, more opportunistic diet with size.
In captivity — where only very large systems are appropriate — it accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and vegetable matter, and it feeds readily once established. Because a large Pangasius will swallow anything that fits in its mouth, tankmates must be robust species too large to be eaten, and feeding should account for a fish that will keep growing toward its 31.5 in potential for years.
Mating
Wild spawning in Pangasius polyuranodon is tied to the seasonal flood pulse of its home rivers. Reports from the Mekong describe an upstream spawning migration triggered at the onset of the flood season, broadly in the May–August window, with more sporadic downstream movements afterward. This pattern — a coordinated migration timed to rising water rather than a fixed pair-bonding or nest-building behaviour — is typical of large, open-river Pangasiidae, which rely on synchronised environmental cues and open water rather than the courtship rituals seen in many smaller aquarium catfish.
There is no evidence of the species forming stable pairs or performing elaborate courtship display; reproduction is best understood as a population-level migratory spawning event linked to river hydrology, similar to other large migratory Pangasius species in the basin.
Breeding
As with the other large commercial Pangasiidae, Pangasius polyuranodon is not a fish that gets bred in the home aquarium. Its adult size, migratory spawning behaviour tied to flood-season river cues, and lack of parental care all put reproduction well outside what any aquarium — even a very large one — can replicate. Where this species and its relatives are propagated at all, it is done at commercial or research hatchery scale using hormone-induced spawning (typically with pituitary extract or synthetic hormone injections) to trigger egg release in conditioned broodstock, mirroring the techniques long used for its more heavily farmed relative P. hypophthalmus.
There is no parental care after spawning: eggs and fry are left to develop unguarded, consistent with the open-water, flood-triggered reproductive strategy of large migratory river catfish. Aquarists should not expect, and should not attempt to force, captive breeding of this species.
In the aquarium
Pangasius polyuranodon is a genuine size-trap fish: it is sold in shops as an attractive, active, inexpensive juvenile only a few centimetres long, but FishBase gives its real maximum size as roughly 31.5 in SL — large enough that no ordinary home aquarium can house an adult for its full life. Anyone considering this species should plan from the outset for a very large public-aquarium-scale system or a substantial outdoor pond, with strong filtration and unrestricted swimming space; buying one 'because it's small in the shop' is the single most common mistake made with this genus.
Water should be warm and well-oxygenated, with minimal decor so the fish has open room to swim rather than snag its fins or spines on ornaments. As a facultative air-breather it benefits from good surface access. Because it is scaleless, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to some other treatments, so any medicating should be done conservatively and with care. Its stiff, locking dorsal and pectoral spines can tangle in a net and injure both fish and handler, so larger individuals should be moved in a container rather than netted. As a large nocturnal predator it will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be robust and appropriately sized from the start.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasius polyuranodon as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across Southeast Asian river systems, including the Mekong, Chao Phraya and other regional basins, and its use of varied habitats from rivers and lakes to estuaries and flooded forest.
Even so, the species shares the pressures common to large Mekong-basin migratory fishes: damming and hydrological alteration of the flood pulse that its spawning migration depends on, habitat loss in floodplain and flooded-forest feeding grounds, and fishing pressure across its range. Its LC status reflects current range-wide numbers rather than an absence of threat, and populations in heavily dammed or degraded reaches — such as the reduced presence noted above the Khone Falls in the Mekong — illustrate how local declines can occur within an overall secure species.
