Pangasius krempfi is a large, scaleless shark catfish of the Mekong basin that lives an unusual double life: it spends most of its adult existence in the brackish and marine waters of the South China Sea, then migrates far upstream into the Mekong mainstream to spawn. It grows to a reported 47 in SL and over 14 kg, so despite an innocuous juvenile appearance it is a genuine size-trap species — nowhere near suitable for a home aquarium — and its anadromous, ocean-to-river life cycle has made captive breeding essentially impossible. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, its populations reduced by overfishing and by the dams now cutting across its migration route.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangasius krempfi was described by Fang and Chaux in 1949 and placed in the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes of South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Pangasius krempfi as the valid combination, and it has remained in Pangasius since its original description; older regional literature on Mekong catfishes sometimes lumps it loosely with other large pangasiids, but no separate genus has ever displaced it.

The genus name Pangasius derives from a Southeast Asian vernacular name for these catfishes. The species epithet krempfi honours a naturalist named Krempf, following the common 19th- and 20th-century convention of naming a newly described species after a collector or colleague. Within Pangasiidae the genus holds roughly two dozen species, several of which — like this one — are large, migratory, and of major commercial importance across the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems.

Morphology

Like other Pangasius, this species has the classic "shark catfish" silhouette: a streamlined, laterally compressed body, a deeply forked tail, a tall sickle-shaped dorsal fin with a stiff leading spine, and long paired barbels on the upper jaw. The skin is entirely scaleless, smooth and naked rather than plated, which is typical of the family but means the fish lacks the protective scale layer many other freshwater fish rely on.

FishBase reports a maximum size of 47 in standard length and up to 14 kg, making Pangasius krempfi one of the larger Pangasiidae — smaller than the giant Mekong catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) but still a genuinely big-river fish, not a species that stays aquarium-sized. Juveniles sold in the trade are a fraction of this size and give no visual warning of the adult bulk to come.

Habitat

Pangasius krempfi is native to the Mekong basin, ranging from the Mekong Delta up through Cambodia and Laos to around Chiang Saen on the Thailand–Laos–Myanmar border; the type locality lies on the Mekong at the Thailand–Cambodia border. Unusually for a freshwater shark catfish, it is anadromous: genetic and tagging work (Duong et al. 2023) shows it spends the greater part of its life in the brackish and marine waters of the South China Sea coastal zone off the Mekong Delta, then migrates far upstream into fresh water to spawn.

The upstream spawning migration runs from roughly May to September, with at least two distinct populations in the Mekong showing slightly different migration timing (May–September versus May–August). This marine-to-freshwater life history is rare among Pangasiidae and ties the species to an intact, connected river-to-sea corridor rather than to a single static habitat — a corridor now interrupted in several places by dams.

Feeding

As with Pangasius generally, this is an omnivorous, voracious feeder rather than a fussy specialist. In the wild it takes fish, aquatic invertebrates, and other food matched to its size as it grows, foraging opportunistically through both its marine and freshwater phases.

Where it is kept at all — almost always in oversized systems, public aquaria, or aquaculture ponds rather than home tanks — it accepts live, frozen and prepared foods readily, including fish, prawn and formulated pellets. Any tankmates must be too large for it to swallow; a fish that reaches 47 in SL will treat anything smaller as prey.

Mating

Mating in Pangasius krempfi is inseparable from its anadromous migration. Adults that have matured in brackish coastal and marine waters move upstream into the Mekong mainstream during the wet-season migration window, travelling long distances to reach freshwater spawning grounds. This complex, large-scale migratory spawning pattern — moving between marine and freshwater environments on a seasonal cycle — is what PlanetCatfish and the broader Pangasiidae literature flag as the reason captive breeding is essentially unworkable: no aquarium or hatchery setup can replicate an ocean-to-river migration of this scale.

No detailed account of courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented in the wild for this species; what is known comes chiefly from tracking migration timing and genetic population structure rather than direct observation of spawning.

Breeding

Pangasius krempfi is not bred in home aquaria, and for practical purposes it is not bred in captivity at all. Its anadromous, marine-to-river migratory spawning strategy cannot be reproduced outside the wild river-to-sea corridor it depends on, and unlike some of its more commercially important relatives (such as the farmed Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, the familiar "basa" or "swai"), there is no established hormone-induced hatchery protocol for this particular species in the available literature. Wild-caught juveniles and wild spawning runs remain the basis of what limited trade and monitoring exist.

Parental care is absent, as in essentially all pangasiids: eggs and fry are left to develop unguarded after the migratory spawning event, with no nest-building or brood-guarding behaviour recorded.

In the aquarium

Pangasius krempfi should not be considered a realistic aquarium fish. It is sold occasionally as a small, inexpensive juvenile, but it is a textbook size-trap species: a reported adult size of up to 47 in SL and 14 kg means it will outgrow essentially every home aquarium, and rehoming options for a fish this large are extremely limited. Anyone offered a small "Pangasius" juvenile should assume it needs a pond- or public-aquarium-scale system as an adult, not a display tank.

For the rare setting where its size can genuinely be accommodated, water should be kept soft-to-neutral, around pH 7.0–7.5 and 75–86 °F, matching general Pangasius husbandry guidance. Its skin is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and many medications — treat conservatively, often at half the labelled dose. It carries stiff, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag a net and jab the handler, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. As a large, food-driven predator it will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasius krempfi as Vulnerable, a listing in place since 2011. The assessment cites a population decline of more than 30% over the preceding two decades, driven by overexploitation of the migratory spawning runs, hydropower dam construction that fragments its river-to-sea migration corridor, and water pollution across the Mekong basin.

Because the species depends on an intact migratory pathway between the South China Sea and the upper Mekong, it is unusually exposed to mainstream dam-building, which can block or delay the spawning migration even where downstream habitat itself remains intact. Its status is a useful indicator of connectivity loss across one of the world's most heavily dammed major river systems.
