Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius sanitwongsei was described by the American ichthyologist Hugh McCormick Smith in 1931 from specimens collected in Thailand. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes of South and Southeast Asia, a group of large, streamlined, scaleless catfishes built for life in major river channels. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Pangasius sanitwongsei as the valid name and places it firmly within genus Pangasius.
The family Pangasiidae is distinct from the giant Mekong species Pangasianodon gigas; Pangasius sanitwongsei is a separate, sizeable species in its own right, though both share the same broad river corridor. The genus Pangasius holds about 25 recognised species distributed across South and mainland Southeast Asia, several of which have been moved between generic combinations historically; the type locality for this species is the Mekong River system in Thailand.
The specific epithet sanitwongsei honours Prince Sanitwongse, a Thai nobleman and supporter of natural history in Siam, reflecting the early twentieth-century convention of naming large, conspicuous Thai fish after royalty or distinguished patrons.
Morphology
Pangasius sanitwongsei has the long, laterally compressed body typical of pangasiids — a streamlined build suited to fast-flowing river channels. The head is broad and flattened anteriorly, the mouth wide and subterminal, equipped with small teeth and two pairs of barbels (one maxillary, one mandibular pair) that are shorter relative to the large Wels catfish but functional for locating food in low-light conditions. The dorsal profile rises sharply to the tall dorsal fin, which carries a stiff, serrated, locking spine; the paired pectoral fins also bear prominent locking spines capable of tangling in a net and puncturing the skin of a careless handler.
The body is entirely scaleless — a trait shared across Pangasiidae — covered instead by naked skin that is grey to silver-blue above and pale below, sometimes with faint lateral banding in juveniles that fades with age. Adults reach 15.5–19.5 in standard length as a typical aquarium or aquaculture weight; specimens kept in open pond conditions are recorded beyond 23.5 in. The forked, broad tail fin reflects an ancestry in open-water river swimming.
Habitat
The native range of Pangasius sanitwongsei centres on the Mekong River drainage across Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, with records also from the Chao Phraya system in central Thailand. Both drainages are large, lowland tropical rivers characterised by warm water, moderate to high flow velocities in the main channel, and annual flood-pulse cycles that drive fish movements into floodplains and back.
Water parameters in these rivers are warm and broadly neutral to slightly acidic: temperatures in the 75–82 °F range year-round in the lowland reaches, with pH values spanning roughly 6.0–7.5 depending on season and local geology. Hardness is soft to moderate; this is not the hard alkaline water of the African rift lakes. Large adults are mostly found in the main channel or in deep pool habitats; juveniles can be collected from quieter near-shore areas and are encountered in the aquarium trade because they are easy to seine in volume at small sizes.
Feeding
Pangasius sanitwongsei is an obligate piscivore and large-scale generalist predator. In the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems it preys on smaller fish, crustaceans, and larger aquatic invertebrates, hunting primarily at night and in low-light conditions when its barbels and lateral line compensate for reduced visibility. Any fish or invertebrate small enough to be engulfed is a potential prey item.
In the aquarium or aquaculture setting it accepts large meaty foods — whole feeder fish, large prawns, market squid cut into chunks, and high-protein sinking pellets formulated for large predatory catfishes. It will not reliably take small, scattered foods and should not be expected to compete with community fish at feeding time. Because it will consume any tankmate it can swallow, companions must be demonstrably too large to fit in its mouth; the margin for error narrows as the catfish grows.
Mating
In the wild, Pangasius sanitwongsei undertakes upstream spawning migrations during the seasonal flood-pulse, when rising water temperatures and photoperiod shifts trigger the reproductive cycle. The fish aggregate in large pre-spawning groups, moving into the upper reaches of the Mekong and its tributaries to spawn over submerged substrates during the flood season. This migratory reproductive behaviour is typical of large pangasiid catfishes and is tied to hydrological cues that cannot be replicated in a home aquarium.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle — ripe females are broader and fuller-bodied than males — but sexing individuals outside the breeding season is difficult without internal examination. In commercial aquaculture settings, broodstock are identified by experienced hatchery staff and conditioned under managed pond systems rather than in tanks.
Breeding
Pangasius sanitwongsei is not bred in the home aquarium. The species is reproduced commercially in Thailand, Vietnam, and neighbouring countries using hormone-induced spawning: broodstock reared in large earthen ponds or concrete raceways are injected with pituitary extract or synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues to bring females into spawning condition, eggs are stripped, fertilised with milt from treated males, and the larvae reared in shallow outdoor ponds or flow-through systems. The scale, infrastructure, and induced hormone protocols involved are entirely beyond the scope of home aquaculture.
Even in public aquarium settings, breeding attempts are rarely undertaken; the fish's migratory spawning behaviour and requirement for flood-cycle cues make captive reproduction without hormonal intervention essentially impossible. Aquarists considering this species should assume that any specimen in the trade is either wild-collected or commercially farm-raised, and that they will not breed it.
In the aquarium
The cardinal rule with Pangasius sanitwongsei is blunt: adults reach 15.5–19.5 in, sometimes longer, and the vast majority of home aquaria are not appropriate housing at any stage past early juvenile. A fish sold at 2.5–3 in will reach 10–12 in within its first year under good conditions and continue growing. Even dedicated large-fish keepers who maintain 2,000-litre or larger systems will find this species stretching the limits; it genuinely belongs in a public aquarium or a purpose-built outdoor pond in a suitable climate.
For those who can provide appropriate scale, care requirements are as follows. Temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water; avoid extremes of hardness or strong alkalinity. Strong filtration and high water turnover are essential — a large active piscivore produces a heavy bioload. Because the skin is entirely scaleless, this species is sensitive to copper-based treatments and many standard fish medications; always dose at half-strength or less, and if possible treat in a separate vessel rather than in the display system. Locking pectoral spines mean it must be moved in a container, never netted — the spines lock erect on alarm and will both tangle fabric netting and puncture the handler's skin.
Compatible tankmates must be emphatically too large to be eaten — fish approaching or exceeding the catfish's own body length. It is primarily nocturnal; provide large cave structures or shaded areas for daytime retreat. This species is not a community fish and should not be considered for mixed tropical community tanks.
Conservation
Pangasius sanitwongsei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. The broader genus in the Mekong faces well-documented pressures — dam construction on the Mekong mainstream and tributaries blocks spawning migrations, sand-mining degrades river channel habitats, and overfishing for the food market has reduced populations of large riverine catfishes across the drainage. Related species such as Pangasianodon gigas, the Mekong giant catfish, are Critically Endangered, and Pangasius sanitwongsei faces a broadly similar landscape of threats even if the degree has not been formally quantified.
The aquarium trade is a secondary concern: wild juveniles are collected opportunistically alongside pangasiid farming operations, and the size trap means many aquarium specimens are relinquished or die prematurely in undersized tanks, creating welfare concerns without meaningfully contributing to conservation. Commercial aquaculture for the food fish industry is extensive, particularly for congeners such as Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, but this does not protect wild stocks of P. sanitwongsei from habitat loss.
