Alestopetersius tumbensis is a small Congo Basin tetra seldom seen in the ornamental trade, native to the blackwater extremes of Lake Tumba and connected waterways in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring Republic of Congo. Closely related to the more frequently imported Congo tetra relatives of its genus, it inhabits some of the most acidic freshwaters on Earth — Lake Tumba has been recorded at pH 3.6 to 4.6 — and drifts through open water in the pelagic zone of those stained, tannin-rich lakes and rivers. Its rarity in aquaria owes more to limited collection in its remote range than to any intractability, and its IUCN assessment of Least Concern reflects a broad and stable distribution across the Congo watershed.

Taxonomy & naming

Alestopetersius tumbensis was originally described by J. J. Hoedeman in 1951 under the genus Hemigrammopetersius. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Alestopetersius tumbensis (Hoedeman, 1951), with the parenthetical authority reflecting its transfer from the original placement to the genus Alestopetersius. The family Alestidae — the African tetras — contains a diverse radiation of characiform fishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from the giant tigerfish (Hydrocynus) to small schooling tetras barely a centimetre long.

The genus Alestopetersius is named in connection with the German naturalist and zoologist Wilhelm Peters, whose nineteenth-century expedition work in Africa produced a large number of new species descriptions; the name honours his legacy in African ichthyology. The specific epithet tumbensis refers to the type locality, Lake Tumba, a shallow oxbow lake in the western Congo Basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The species has sometimes been confused in the trade and literature with its congener Alestopetersius caudalis, the yellow Congo tetra, which is more commonly imported and superficially similar.

Morphology

Alestopetersius tumbensis is a slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in. Like other members of Alestidae it carries the adipose fin characteristic of many characiforms, and the body plan is typical of the group: a moderately deep profile, large eyes suited to dimly lit water, and a small, terminal mouth.

Detailed colour descriptions from preserved or captive specimens are sparse in the available literature. As with many alestid tetras, the live colouration is likely to include a lateral stripe or silvery body sheen with some iridescence, but specific pigmentation data for this species in life are not well documented in the sources at hand. Its closest identification challenge is A. caudalis, which hobbyist sources note is the more commonly seen species and from which tumbensis may be distinguished primarily by provenance and morphometric details rather than obvious visual cues.

Habitat

The type locality of Alestopetersius tumbensis is Lake Tumba, a shallow, humic lake in the western Congo Basin, DRC, notable for its extreme acidity. A 2019 ichthyological survey of Lake Tumba (Zanga et al., Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria 49(4):341–354) characterised the lake as very humic with a pH range of 3.6 to 4.6 — among the most acidic waters documented for any significant freshwater fish habitat. The species was recorded in the pelagic zone, occupying open water rather than littoral vegetation.

Beyond Lake Tumba, the known distribution extends to Malebo Pool (the broad reach of the Congo River between present-day Kinshasa and Brazzaville), the Kwenge River in the Kwilu drainage, and the Kouyou River, a Likouala tributary of the Congo system in the Republic of Congo. This range spans a considerable stretch of the central and western Congo Basin, in waters that tend to be soft, warm, and heavily stained with humic acids derived from decomposing forest material.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies specific to Alestopetersius tumbensis appear in the available literature. As a pelagic alestid tetra in the Congo Basin, the species almost certainly feeds on small invertebrates — zooplankton, insect larvae, and small crustaceans — taken in open water, which is consistent with the foraging mode of related species in the genus and family.

In an aquarium setting, such a fish would typically accept fine-particled prepared foods — small-grade flake or micro-pellets — alongside live or frozen zooplankton, Daphnia, and similarly sized invertebrate prey. Given the extreme softness and acidity of its native Lake Tumba, diet in the wild is likely constrained by the limited invertebrate productivity of very acidic blackwater.

Mating

No published observations of courtship or spawning behaviour in Alestopetersius tumbensis appear in the sources consulted. By analogy with other alestid tetras of similar body plan and ecology, egg-scattering open-water or plant-associated spawning with no parental care is the most likely reproductive strategy. Males of alestid tetras often develop more elaborate finnage or colouration during the breeding season and pursue females in active chases.

Given the extreme blackwater conditions of Lake Tumba, any wild spawning would occur in water of very low pH and minimal mineral content. Whether this represents a physiological requirement for embryo development or simply reflects ambient conditions is unknown for this species, but breeders working with similarly acidic-water alestids have found that replicating soft, acidic conditions often triggers spawning behaviour.

Breeding

Alestopetersius tumbensis has not been documented in captive breeding programmes in the sources reviewed here, reflecting its rarity in the ornamental trade. Based on the general biology of the family, reproduction would be expected to follow the alestid pattern: egg-scattering among fine-leaved vegetation or open water, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs, no parental care, and adults that will predate their own spawn if left together after spawning.

For any keeper fortunate enough to obtain specimens, conditioning with live foods, very soft and acidic water mimicking Lake Tumba parameters, and the addition of spawning mops or fine plants would represent a reasonable starting protocol. The pelagic habitat preference recorded in the wild suggests spawning may occur in open water rather than tightly among vegetation.

In the aquarium

Alestopetersius tumbensis is extremely rare in the ornamental trade and virtually absent from hobbyist records. Aquarium Glaser notes that the species is seldom imported and is easily confused with the more widely available A. caudalis (yellow Congo tetra); most fish sold as Congo tetra relatives belong to the latter or related congeners rather than to tumbensis. Any specimens that do reach hobbyists would be expected to require the very soft, acidic conditions of their native range — water with pH below 6 and minimal hardness would be appropriate given Lake Tumba's documented pH of 3.6–4.6.

As a pelagic schooling fish, it would likely do best in a group of six or more in a well-filtered, lightly decorated aquarium with tannin-stained water. Temperatures typical of the Congo Basin — approximately 75–82 °F — and subdued lighting consistent with blackwater environments would suit it. The rarity of the species means that detailed captive care information is sparse, and any keeper working with it would be contributing to a thin body of hobby literature.

Conservation

Alestopetersius tumbensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded by FishBase as dated 16 February 2009. The LC rating reflects a distribution across multiple waterbodies in the Congo Basin — Lake Tumba, Malebo Pool, the Kwenge River, and the Kouyou River — rather than a narrow endemism, and no major threats to the species or its habitat were identified at the time of assessment.

The Congo Basin as a whole remains one of the world's most intact large river systems, with the remote and largely forested catchments of many tributaries providing some buffer against the agricultural and urban pressures that have degraded fish habitats elsewhere in Africa. Lake Tumba and its surroundings fall within a broader area that has attracted conservation attention for its biodiversity. The species' obscurity in the ornamental trade means that commercial collection is not an identified threat.
