Synodontis multipunctatus, the cuckoo catfish, is the most remarkable member of the African squeaker genus and one of the strangest fish an aquarist can keep: an endemic of Lake Tanganyika that breeds by brood parasitism, slipping its own eggs into the mouths of spawning mouthbrooding cichlids so the unwitting host raises a clutch of catfish instead of its own young. Away from that headline trick it is a handsome, hardy, boldly spotted catfish of the rocky rift-lake shallows — a genuine squeaker that locks and grinds its pectoral spines to make an audible sound, and one of the few Synodontis regularly bred in captivity precisely because of the cuckoo strategy.

Taxonomy & naming

Synodontis multipunctatus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898 from Lake Tanganyika. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, and to the large genus Synodontis, which holds well over a hundred species across Africa. The Catalog of Fishes treats Synodontis multipunctatus as the valid name.

The genus name Synodontis is an old term applied to these catfishes; the epithet multipunctatus is Latin for "many-spotted", describing the dense, dark, well-separated spots scattered over a pale body that make the species easy to recognise. Lake Tanganyika holds a small flock of endemic Synodontis, and multipunctatus is superficially similar to a few of them (notably S. grandiops and S. petricola), so aquarium fish are sometimes confused or mislabelled; the eye size, spot pattern and fin markings separate them.

Morphology

The cuckoo catfish has the typical squeaker build: a broad, flattened head, a sturdy body, three pairs of barbels (one long maxillary pair on the upper jaw and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs), a tall dorsal fin and a deeply forked tail. The ground colour is a pale grey to gold-brown, overlaid with a bold pattern of rounded dark spots, and the fins carry dark bands. Like other Synodontis it bears stiff, serrated, locking spines at the front of the dorsal and pectoral fins.

Reported maximum size is around 11 in total length (FishBase), but aquarium specimens are usually much smaller, commonly 4–6 in. As in many catfish the skin is scaleless, which matters for medication (see "In the aquarium"). The pectoral spines can be locked erect and rasped against the pectoral girdle to produce the characteristic "squeak", a sound thought to serve in defence and communication.

Habitat

Synodontis multipunctatus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the ancient, deep rift lake shared by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. It lives over the rocky and sandy floors of the lake's littoral zone, often in the same rubble and rock habitats as the mouthbrooding cichlids it depends on to breed.

Tanganyika water is hard and distinctly alkaline — high in dissolved minerals, with a pH typically around 7.8 to 9.0 and warm, stable temperatures near 75–81 °F. This is not a soft, acidic blackwater fish: it needs the mineral-rich, alkaline conditions of its home lake, the same water that suits Tanganyikan cichlids, and it does poorly if kept soft and acidic.

Feeding

The cuckoo catfish is an omnivore and opportunist. In the lake it takes aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs — along with some plant and algal material, foraging over the bottom mostly at dusk and after dark.

In the aquarium it is undemanding and will take sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and most prepared foods; snails are eaten readily. Because it feeds largely at night, it is worth offering food after lights-out so a squeaker in a busy community is not out-competed. It is not a specialist and does not need live food, though it relishes it.

Mating

The mating of Synodontis multipunctatus is its claim to fame: it is a brood parasite, the only well-documented case of brood parasitism in fishes. The catfish do not build a nest or defend a territory of their own. Instead, a group shadows spawning mouthbrooding cichlids and darts in during the cichlid's own spawning, eating some of the host's eggs and releasing their own to be picked up in their place.

The timing is exquisite: the cichlid gathers the mixed clutch into her mouth and broods it as if it were her own. Because the catfish embryos develop faster, they hatch first inside the mouthbrooding female and then consume the host's developing eggs and fry, emerging as a brood of young catfish raised at the cichlid's expense. In the wild the hosts are Tanganyikan mouthbrooders; in aquaria, keepers exploit the trick by spawning the catfish alongside mouthbrooding cichlids (often Tanganyikan or even unrelated African mouthbrooders).

Breeding

This species is one of the few Synodontis bred with any regularity in the hobby, and the method follows its wild biology. A group of catfish is kept with actively spawning mouthbrooding cichlids; when the cichlids spawn, the catfish spawn at the same moment, and the female cichlid picks up catfish eggs along with (or instead of) her own. She is then stripped or allowed to brood, and the fast-developing catfish fry are collected.

Sexing is not obvious — mature females are fuller-bodied than the slimmer males, and a well-conditioned group spawned in the presence of breeding cichlids is the usual approach rather than pairing. The reliance on a host means the catfish invests little parental care of its own; the whole strategy is a shortcut that offloads brood care onto the cichlid. Keepers should be aware that a successful cuckoo spawn comes at the cost of the host cichlid's own clutch.

In the aquarium

Synodontis multipunctatus is a rewarding, hardy aquarium fish given the right water. Because it is a Lake Tanganyika endemic it wants hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.8–9.0) at 75–81 °F, which makes it a natural companion for Tanganyikan and other rift-lake cichlids rather than for a soft-water community. Provide rockwork and caves for daytime cover; it is most active in the evening. A group is more natural and more likely to breed than a single fish.

Two care points follow from its biology. First, it is a scaleless catfish, so it is more sensitive than a scaled fish to copper and to some medications — dose conservatively and treat with care. Second, it carries locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines that readily tangle in a net and can give the keeper a jab, so it is best moved in a container rather than netted. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to eat, but like most catfish it will take very small fish; match it with robust rift-lake companions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Synodontis multipunctatus as Least Concern. It is a widespread endemic within Lake Tanganyika, one of the most species-rich lakes on Earth, and it is not currently considered threatened at the whole-lake scale.

That said, its fortunes are tied entirely to Lake Tanganyika and to the mouthbrooding cichlids it parasitises, so lake-wide pressures — warming and reduced mixing, shoreline development, sedimentation and overfishing of the cichlid community — are the relevant long-term concerns. Much of the aquarium supply is captive-bred through the cuckoo method described above, which reduces collection pressure on the wild population.
