Synodontis petricola, the Dwarf Lake Synodontis, is a small, spotted squeaker endemic to the rocky shallows of Lake Tanganyika and one of the most popular of all the rift-lake catfishes in the hobby. Reaching only about 4–5 in in full maturity, it is compact enough for a modestly sized Tanganyika biotope, sociable enough to keep in groups, and shares with its larger relative S. multipunctatus a version of the remarkable cuckoo brood-parasite strategy — spawning alongside mouthbrooding cichlids so that the host raises catfish young. A hardy, peaceable, and strikingly patterned fish, it rewards any keeper who can supply the hard, alkaline conditions of its ancient home lake.

Taxonomy & naming

Synodontis petricola was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Hubert Matthes in 1959 from specimens collected in Lake Tanganyika. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, and to the wide-ranging genus Synodontis — the largest catfish genus on the continent, with well over a hundred valid species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Synodontis petricola Matthes, 1959 as the valid name.

The epithet petricola is formed from the Latin petra (rock) and -cola (dweller), naming the species' preference for rocky substrates — fitting for a fish that spends its days wedged under boulders in Tanganyika's littoral zone. In the trade it is frequently labelled "Dwarf Lake Synodontis", "False Cuckoo Synodontis", or simply "cuckoo catfish", which can cause confusion with the true cuckoo catfish S. multipunctatus. Tanganyika holds a small flock of closely related endemic Synodontis — including S. multipunctatus, S. lucipinnis, S. grandiops and S. polli — and mislabelling in the trade is common; spot pattern density, adult size and eye size help to separate them.

Morphology

S. petricola has the classic squeaker body plan: a broad, flattened head, a stocky torso and a deeply forked caudal fin. Three pairs of barbels extend from around the mouth — one long maxillary pair and two shorter, branched mandibular pairs. The ground colour is pale cream to light grey, densely overlaid with small, rounded dark spots across the body and fins, giving adults a leopard-like appearance. The dorsal and adipose fins carry dark markings; the pectoral, pelvic and anal fins are variably spotted.

The species is notably small for its genus. FishBase records a maximum of 4 in total length for unsexed specimens; the hobby literature (Seriously Fish) reports up to about 5 in including fin extensions, though a "dwarf form" of around 4.5 in is also documented. Like all Synodontis it carries stiff, serrated, locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins — these can lock erect, are sharp enough to jab the keeper, and tangle readily in a net. The skin is entirely scaleless, which has direct implications for medication sensitivity.

Habitat

Synodontis petricola is an endemic of Lake Tanganyika, the ancient East African rift lake shared by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia. It inhabits the rocky littoral zone — the boulder-strewn shallows where stones and rubble provide an abundance of crevices, caves and narrow gaps for shelter. It is frequently found in the same microhabitats as the mouthbrooding cichlids on which its cuckoo breeding strategy depends.

Tanganyika water is chemically quite unlike soft tropical rivers: it is hard, mineral-rich and distinctly alkaline, with a pH that ranges from roughly 7.5 to 9.0 depending on source and depth, and stable warm temperatures in the range 72–82 °F. This is emphatically not a soft, acidic blackwater species — it requires the hard, alkaline conditions characteristic of all Tanganyika endemics, and it does poorly if kept soft or acidic.

Feeding

S. petricola is an omnivore and an undemanding feeder. In the lake it forages over the rocky substrate after dark, picking up aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs — along with scraps of plant and algal matter. Some rift-lake Synodontis rasp aufwuchs from rocks; S. petricola feeds opportunistically on whatever organic material the substrate offers.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of foods: sinking catfish pellets and algae wafers are reliable staples, supplemented with frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. It will also graze on fresh vegetables such as cucumber and peas. Like most Synodontis, it is most active at dusk and through the night, so it is worth ensuring food reaches the bottom after lights-out to prevent bolder tankmates from taking everything first.

Mating

S. petricola practices a form of brood parasitism similar to the famous strategy of S. multipunctatus, and this is what earns it the common name "False Cuckoo Synodontis". When mouthbrooding cichlids in the same tank begin to spawn, the catfish rush in and release their own eggs alongside the cichlids' clutch. The female cichlid picks up the mixed batch of eggs into her mouth and broods them as her own.

The catfish embryos tend to develop quickly, and the juvenile catfish emerge inside the mouthbrooding female, where they may consume the host's remaining eggs and larvae before the female releases them. In the wild the hosts are the mouthbrooding cichlids of Lake Tanganyika's littoral zone; in the aquarium the technique can be replicated with compatible mouthbrooders, and flower-pot or spawning-marble rigs are sometimes used to encourage controlled spawning. Sexually mature males tend to be slimmer; females become noticeably fuller-bodied in condition.

Breeding

Breeding S. petricola in the aquarium is achievable and follows the cuckoo strategy described above. A group of well-conditioned fish (ideally four or more, to provide a natural social dynamic) is housed with actively spawning mouthbrooding cichlids — Tanganyikan species are the most natural match but other African mouthbrooders have been used. When the cichlids spawn, the catfish spawn at the same moment; the female cichlid collects catfish eggs along with her own (or instead of them). She is then either allowed to brood to term or stripped after a short interval.

Eggs incubate for approximately 24 hours before hatching (Seriously Fish). Fry are tiny and require infusoria or very fine powdered food initially, graduating to small live and frozen foods. Parental care by the catfish is absent — the entire brood investment is offloaded onto the cichlid host, and successful cuckoo spawning typically costs the cichlid its own clutch. Where no mouthbrooding cichlids are available, commercial breeders sometimes use hormone induction.

In the aquarium

S. petricola is among the most manageable of the Tanganyika Synodontis, and its compact adult size — around 4–5 in — makes it suitable for tanks of 55 US gal or more when kept as a social group. It is important to keep at least four individuals together; solitary or paired fish are shyer and less active, and the species is naturally gregarious in the rocky shallows of the lake. The aquascape should include a generous amount of rockwork with caves, crevices and overhangs for daytime retreat, as the fish are secretive by day and emerge most actively after dusk.

Water chemistry must reflect the fish's rift-lake origins: hard, alkaline water at pH 7.5–9.0 and a temperature of 72–82 °F. This makes S. petricola a natural companion for Tanganyikan cichlids (Tropheus, Neolamprologus, Altolamprologus, Julidochromis and similar species) rather than a soft-water community. Two care points follow directly from its biology. First, the skin is entirely scaleless, making the fish sensitive to copper-based medications and many common treatments — halve doses and consider copper-free alternatives wherever possible, as with loaches and other naked-skinned catfishes. Second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines are sharp and easily tangled in aquarium nets, with a real risk of injuring both fish and keeper; always move this species in a smooth-sided container rather than a net. Tankmates smaller than about 1 in risk being eaten; otherwise S. petricola is peaceful toward robust companions of comparable or larger size.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Synodontis petricola as Least Concern in 2025. The species is a widespread endemic within Lake Tanganyika and is not currently considered threatened at a population level.

Nevertheless, as a Lake Tanganyika endemic its long-term prospects are tied entirely to the health of that lake. Tanganyika faces a suite of ongoing pressures — progressive warming and reduced deep-water mixing that affects oxygen availability throughout the water column, sedimentation from deforested catchments, artisanal overfishing, and urban development along its shores. The aquarium trade relies on a mixture of wild-collected fish and captive-bred stock, the latter produced using the cuckoo method described above. Expansion of captive breeding reduces collection pressure, but wild collection continues and is worth noting when sourcing fish.
