A specialist of fast, rocky rivers in the Suriname highlands, Hypostomus micromaculatus is a mid-sized loricariid whose small, densely packed spots earned it its name and whose rheophilic lifestyle sets it apart from the sluggish-water plecos more familiar to aquarists. Its restricted range in the Suriname River basin and Near Threatened status make it one of the more conservation-notable members of an otherwise species-rich genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus micromaculatus was formally described by Marinus Boeseman in his 1968 monograph 'The genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803, and its Surinam representatives (Siluriformes, Loricariidae)', published in Zoologische Verhandelingen (Leiden) No. 99, pages 1–89 — a landmark work that systematically treated the Surinamese Hypostomus fauna and remained a primary reference for the genus for decades. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypostomus micromaculatus Boeseman, 1968 as a valid species.

Boeseman's monograph placed the species within the large, cosmopolitan genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 — a genus that today encompasses more than 140 valid species distributed across South American river systems east of the Andes, and one of the most species-rich genera in all of Loricariidae. The species is the only Hypostomus endemic to the Suriname River drainage documented in Boeseman's treatment, a narrow distribution reflected in its current Near Threatened status. The informal English name 'Stone-sucker Pleco' alludes directly to its rheophilic, rocky-substrate microhabitat.

Morphology

Hypostomus micromaculatus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 7.5 in SL — a robust, mid-sized Hypostomus by the standards of the genus. The body follows the general loricariid plan: dorsoventrally flattened, heavily armoured by overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, with the unplated ventral surface pale and soft. The head is broad and depressed, bearing the characteristic ventral rasping mouth equipped with spatulate, bicuspid teeth adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from hard substrate.

The species is distinguished by a pattern of small, usually elongate spots on both the body and fins — a coloration captured in its specific epithet. In rheophilic Hypostomus, the body proportions tend toward a more streamlined, lower-profile build suited to maintaining position in fast water without being swept by current, and the pectoral and pelvic fins are broad-based and capable of generating strong adhesion against the substrate.

Sexual dimorphism data specific to H. micromaculatus are not documented in accessible sources; across the genus, males sometimes develop elongated interopercular odontodes during the breeding season, and gravid females are typically wider-bodied when viewed from above.

Habitat

Hypostomus micromaculatus inhabits the upper and middle Suriname River basin in Suriname, with its distribution bounded upstream of the lower falls — a range confined to the higher-gradient, rocky portions of the drainage on the Guiana Shield. The Guiana Shield is among the geologically oldest landmasses in South America, and its rivers drain ancient, nutrient-poor basement rock, producing characteristically soft, acidic to near-neutral, low-conductivity waters.

The species is described as rheophilic, associated with rocky substrates — boulders, stones, and gravel interspersed with sand — in sections of moderate to strong current. These conditions provide both the hard surfaces on which algae and periphyton develop as a food source and the structural complexity that offers refuge from current and predators. The Suriname River is seasonally variable: the wet season brings elevated discharge, cooler temperatures, and more dilute water; dry-season conditions concentrate the flow, warm the water slightly, and expose more rocky outcrops. Specific water parameter measurements for the type locality are not available in accessible sources.

Feeding

No dietary study specific to Hypostomus micromaculatus has been published in accessible sources. The species' rheophilic lifestyle on rocky substrates strongly implies a diet based on the periphyton community — the matrix of algae (including diatoms and green algae), cyanobacteria, fungi, and fine detritus that colonises submerged rock surfaces in flowing water. The high-current, light-exposed rocky surfaces of Guiana Shield rivers support productive periphyton biofilms, and the spatulate rasping teeth of Hypostomus are well adapted for harvesting this resource.

Like other Hypostomus, H. micromaculatus almost certainly also ingests incidental invertebrates entrained within algal mats, and organic detritus trapped between substrate particles. The genus as a whole is capable of facultative air-breathing, though the ecological relevance of this capacity varies among species and habitats.

Mating

Mating and courtship behaviour have not been specifically documented for Hypostomus micromaculatus. The rheophilic, rocky-substrate lifestyle typical of this species implies that suitable spawning sites would be cavities or overhangs within or beneath boulder accumulations — features common in the fast-water sections of the Suriname River that the species inhabits.

Across Hypostomus, territorial male behaviour around cave and crevice sites is typical in the breeding season, with males competing for and defending suitable spawning localities. For a species of the size of H. micromaculatus (up to 7.5 in SL), breeding cavities beneath or between boulders would be the expected spawning microhabitat. This species is not established in the ornamental trade, so aquarium observations are unavailable.

Breeding

Breeding data for Hypostomus micromaculatus have not been published in sources accessible at the time of writing. Extrapolating from the genus, the species would be expected to be a cave-spawner in which the male guards and aerates a clutch of adhesive eggs deposited within a rocky crevice or similar enclosed space. Parental care in most studied Hypostomus species is paternal — the male remains with the eggs, preventing fungusing and removing non-viable eggs until hatching and early fry development.

Given the absence of trade records and captive observations, clutch size, incubation duration, and larval development remain undocumented for this species.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus micromaculatus is not an established aquarium fish and does not appear in the ornamental trade under this name. Its rheophilic requirements — strong current, rocky substrate, well-oxygenated water — would make it a specialist aquarium subject even if available, more akin to hillstream loach and rheophilic cichlid setups than a standard pleco community tank.

Any attempt to maintain this species would need to replicate the soft, low-mineral water of Guiana Shield rivers, with high dissolved oxygen, robust filtration providing strong flow, and a substrate of smooth boulders and coarse gravel. Temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, soft and slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–7.0, low conductivity) would match the general character of Suriname River highland waters. A diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and biofilm on natural stones would be appropriate in principle. These parameters are inferred from habitat description; no captive husbandry records exist to validate them.

Conservation

Hypostomus micromaculatus is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated January 2021. The NT listing reflects the species' restricted distribution — confined to the upper and middle Suriname River basin upstream of the lower falls — which limits the total population to a comparatively small geographic area on the Guiana Shield.

Suriname's interior forest has been subject to pressure from artisanal and industrial gold mining (particularly in and around rivers such as the Marowijne and its tributaries), which can cause localised sedimentation, mercury contamination, and direct habitat destruction that may affect the rocky-substrate communities on which rheophilic species like H. micromaculatus depend. Deforestation for agriculture in the watershed also alters hydrology and sediment loads. The species is not known to be collected for the aquarium trade. Continued monitoring of its range and abundance in the context of expanding mining activity is warranted.
