A rheophilic Hypostomus from the cascading rivers of Suriname, Hypostomus paucimaculatus occupies boulder-strewn rapids where flowering Podostemaceae cling to exposed wet rock — conditions that demand strong attachment and a body built for resistance to current. Small for the genus at 4.5 in, it was described by Boeseman in 1968 from the Suriname River near Brokopondo and remains largely unknown outside specialist circles.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus paucimaculatus was formally described by Boeseman in 1968 in the Zoologische Verhandelingen (Leiden), number 99, based on material from the Suriname River near Brokopondo, Surinam. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the combination Hypostomus paucimaculatus Boeseman, 1968 as valid.

The genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 is one of the most taxonomically unwieldy in freshwater ichthyology, encompassing well over 100 valid species distributed from Panama south to the Rio de la Plata. The specific epithet paucimaculatus is straightforwardly descriptive, from the Latin pauci (few) and maculatus (spotted), referring to the relatively sparse blotch pattern on the body — contrasting with more densely spotted Surinamese congeners. The species is not known to carry any aquarium L-number registration.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum of 4.5 in standard length (SL), placing H. paucimaculatus toward the smaller end of the genus. The body is covered in the characteristic loricariid armour of keeled bony scutes, the profile strongly flattened ventrally and convex above. Coloration is dark ground colour with large, dark blotches on a lighter background — an inversion of the more common light-spots-on-dark pattern seen in many South American Hypostomus. The underside is pale. The specific arrangement and number of blotches, characteristically few and well-spaced, are the primary visual identification cue.

The mouth is ventrally positioned, sucking and scraping in the Hypostomus manner. No morphological data on tooth counts or specific fin-ray meristics for this species are available in the accessible literature beyond the original description. Like other Hypostomus, the species is likely capable of facultative aerial respiration during low-oxygen conditions, a trait documented widely across the genus.

Habitat

The type locality is the Suriname River near Brokopondo, and the species is distributed through the upper and middle portions of the Suriname River basin, Surinam, from headwaters down to the zone upstream of the lower falls. This places it firmly in the transition zone between upland streams and the lowland river — a stretch characterised by rocky substrate of boulders, stones, cobbles, gravel, and sand interspersed with sandy patches.

A key ecological detail reported in the literature is the association of this zone with rheophytic flowering plants: exposed wet rocks and cobbles in the fast-water zone support dense growths of Podostemaceae, notably Mourera fluviatilis and Apinagia richardiana. These plants colonise surfaces where current is greatest and substrate is stable — conditions that also concentrate epilithic algae and fine detrital matter in the biofilm between plant attachment points. H. paucimaculatus is described as a rheophilic species, well adapted to this high-energy, oxygen-rich microhabitat. Specific water-chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) for collection sites are not available in the accessible record.

Feeding

Hypostomus paucimaculatus is an algae scraper, consistent with the dominant feeding strategy in the genus. In the Suriname River rapids it would exploit epilithic algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and biofilm from the boulders and cobbles that define its microhabitat. The Podostemaceae-covered rocks of its preferred zone likely also provide plant biofilm and attached invertebrate material as incidental dietary components.

In captivity, standard loricariid herbivore fare is appropriate: sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, spinach). Supplement with occasional protein — sinking carnivore tabs, mysis, bloodworm — in modest quantities. A current and surfaces on which the fish can scrape are beneficial for both foraging enrichment and physical conditioning.

Mating

No mating or courtship behaviour has been documented for Hypostomus paucimaculatus in the scientific literature or in hobbyist records. The species is not represented in breeding reports on major databases. The general Hypostomus pattern — territorial males occupying burrow or crevice sites, visual and tactile courtship, female choosing among available territories — is the expected template, but no observations specific to this taxon are on record. Data sparse.

Breeding

Hypostomus paucimaculatus has not been bred in aquaria to any documented degree, and no spawning records appear in the accessible literature or hobbyist databases. The species remains uncommon in the trade. General Hypostomus reproductive biology — burrowing or cavity spawning, paternal guarding of eggs, moderate-to-large clutches — provides a biological framework but should not be treated as confirmed for this species in the absence of specific records. Data sparse.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus paucimaculatus is rarely encountered in the hobby and appears in no major L-number catalogue. At 4.5 in SL it is more modestly sized than many Hypostomus commonly sold in the trade, and a tank of around 40–55 US gal would comfortably house a single adult, provided filtration is sufficient to handle the waste output typical of this feeding guild.

The rheophilic nature of the species in the wild argues for well-oxygenated, well-circulated water. Powerheads or a strong canister-outlet current would be appreciated. Rock work and smooth boulders over sandy substrate come closest to replicating the natural microhabitat. Caves or crevice spaces — ceramic tubes, stacked slate — serve the territorial and refuge needs of the fish.

Specific temperature and pH tolerances are not published for this species. Given the Surinamese origin in tropical upland rivers, a range of roughly 75–82 °F and a neutral-to-slightly-acidic pH (6.5–7.5) represents a reasonable starting point, but this should be treated as inference rather than documented preference. The species is expected to be territorial toward other plecos and benthic competitors but peaceful toward dissimilar tank mates.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus paucimaculatus as Least Concern (LC) in January 2021. The assessment notes that the species has a distribution across the upper and middle Suriname River basin and that no major threats have been identified within this range. The relatively restricted single-drainage distribution means that significant negative changes to the Suriname River catchment — from mining, deforestation, or hydroelectric development — could affect the species even without triggering a category change.

The Brokopondo Reservoir, formed by the Afobaka Dam (completed 1964), lies in the Suriname River below the type locality zone and represents an older hydraulic alteration to the system. The long-term population status of H. paucimaculatus within the now-fragmented Suriname River has not been formally studied, and baseline survey data are limited.
