Taxonomy & naming
Laubuka myitthaensis was described by Khin & Chen in 2025 in the journal Zootaxa (vol. 5618, no. 2, article 3), based on material collected from the Myittha River in the Ayeyarwady drainage of Myanmar. The species epithet myitthaensis is a Latinised toponym — 'of (the) Myittha (River)' — and is pronounced roughly mee-TAH-en-sis.
The genus Laubuka was originally carved out of the sprawling assemblage that was historically lumped in Chela or Rasbora, and now sits firmly within the subfamily Danioninae (family Cyprinidae). Laubuka species are slender, laterally compressed, predominantly South and Southeast Asian danionines distributed from India and Bangladesh through Myanmar and across continental Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination as Laubuka myitthaensis Khin & Chen, 2025.
Molecular data from the type description report a COI barcode distance of 0.077 from the nearest congener, comfortably exceeding the intraspecific variation typical of the group and supporting species-level separation. The combination of a short dorsal-fin base (11.8–13.4 % SL), dorsal-fin-base length less than half of anal-fin-base length, and 9–10 branched pectoral-fin rays separates L. myitthaensis from all described Laubuka at the time of publication.
Morphology
Laubuka myitthaensis shares the slim, laterally compressed body plan characteristic of the genus — an elongate form well suited to fast-water rheophilic life in stream margins. The dorsal fin is notably short-based, accounting for only 11.8–13.4 % of standard length, and the dorsal-fin base is less than half the length of the anal-fin base, a proportional character that immediately separates this species from most congeners.
The pectoral fins carry 9–10 branched rays, a count at the lower end of the Laubuka range. Body markings are minimal: aside from faint humeral spots, the flanks are largely plain and without the lateral stripe or body spots seen in some relatives. The overall impression is of a small, unadorned silver fish. Maximum size has not been formally published for this species, but close relatives such as L. laubuca reach roughly 2–2.5 in SL, suggesting L. myitthaensis is likely in a similar or somewhat smaller range.
Habitat
The holotype and type series were collected from flowing stream habitat in the Myittha River, a tributary of the upper Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) drainage in Myanmar. This places L. myitthaensis in a moderate-gradient fluvial system rather than in the slow, still or blackwater environments favoured by some lowland Laubuka. The Myittha drains mountainous terrain before entering the Ayeyarwady valley, and its tributaries are typically clear to lightly turbid, moderately fast-flowing streams over gravel or sand.
Related Laubuka species from Bangladesh and adjacent Myanmar (e.g. L. tenella) occupy small tributary streams with flowing water in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions — water chemistry broadly representative of undisturbed upland streams in the region. Water temperatures in the Myittha drainage reflect the subtropical elevation, likely ranging through the low-to-mid twenties Celsius during the warmer months and cooler in winter. No aquarium-specific parameters have been published for the species.
Feeding
No dietary study has been conducted on Laubuka myitthaensis. By analogy with other danionine cyprinids of similar size and morphology in the Ayeyarwady drainage, it is reasonable to infer an omnivorous or micropredatory diet centred on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other benthic or drifting invertebrates — supplemented by algae and organic detritus. The upturned or subterminal mouth typical of Laubuka is consistent with surface or mid-water feeding.
In an aquarium context, specimens could be expected to accept a wide range of small prepared and live foods in line with other small danionines, but this is untested for the species specifically, and no hobbyist-kept material is known at the time of writing.
Mating
No observations of reproductive behaviour exist for Laubuka myitthaensis. As a member of the subfamily Danioninae, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the mode universal among true danios. In this strategy, a gravid female is pursued closely by one or more males through vegetation or over substrate; eggs and milt are released simultaneously, and the adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among plants, mosses or over gravel.
There is no pair bond, no nest construction and no post-spawning parental involvement of any kind. Adults of egg-scattering cyprinids will readily consume their own spawn, so in wild populations eggs that fall into refugial crevices or dense plant growth have the best survival prospects.
Breeding
Laubuka myitthaensis has not been bred in captivity as far as is known. Given its close relationship to other Laubuka and its membership of the Danioninae, the expected breeding mode is egg-scattering over fine-leaved vegetation, moss or gravel, following the pattern documented for relatives such as L. laubuca. Eggs would be expected to be small, adhesive and numerous, with no parental care after release.
For any hobbyist who does obtain this species, the approach used for related Laubuka — a shallow, well-planted spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water, a fine substrate or mesh to protect eggs from the adults, and removal of the spawning pair after eggs are deposited — would be the logical starting point. Incubation times and fry requirements remain undescribed.
In the aquarium
Laubuka myitthaensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be available through the commercial trade in the near term. Its description is recent (2025), and no captive populations are recorded in the literature. Should it become available, husbandry guidance would need to be extrapolated from congeners: a spacious tank with gentle to moderate current, soft to moderately hard slightly acidic water, and a temperature reflecting its subtropical stream habitat — roughly 68–79 °F — would be a reasonable starting point.
Like all Laubuka, it is almost certainly a social species that should be kept in groups. Its plain coloration may limit hobby appeal, but its status as a newly described endemic of a single Myanmar drainage gives it scientific and collecting interest.
Conservation
Laubuka myitthaensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2025 it has not yet been through the evaluation cycle and should be considered Not Evaluated (NE) at this time. Its known range is restricted to the Myittha River in the Ayeyarwady drainage of Myanmar, making it a range-restricted endemic with an inherently small extent of occurrence.
The Ayeyarwady basin faces growing pressure from hydropower development, agricultural runoff, alluvial gold mining, and increasing sedimentation in upland tributaries — all of which affect clear-water stream specialists. Until a formal assessment is conducted and additional survey work defines the full extent of L. myitthaensis's range, precautionary concern is warranted for any species known from a single river in a basin under significant and accelerating anthropogenic pressure.
