Taxonomy & naming
Laubuka sittaungensis was formally described in 2026 by Khin, Song and Chen in the Journal of Fish Biology (doi: 10.1111/jfb.70495), based on 23 type specimens collected from the Phyu Stream, a tributary draining into the Sittaung River in Bago Region, Myanmar. The species epithet sittaungensis is a Latinised toponym meaning 'of the Sittaung,' referring directly to the river system in whose drainage the fish was discovered.
The genus Laubuka is a small group of slender, laterally compressed danionins distributed across South and Southeast Asia — Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Members of the genus share a suite of characters that distinguish them from the broader danio assemblage: a strongly keeled abdomen, elongate falciform pectoral fins, and neuromast-filled grooves along the head. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid placement in Laubuka.
A concurrent review of Myanmar Laubuka diversity (Zootaxa 5618(2):3; doi: 10.11646/zootaxa.5618.2.3) appears to have included material relevant to this region, though the full text of that treatment was not available at time of writing. L. sittaungensis is a very recently described species and has not yet appeared in major aggregator databases such as GBIF or FishBase.
Morphology
The original description of Laubuka sittaungensis diagnoses the species by a combination of meristic and morphological characters that separate it from other known Laubuka. Distinguishing features include an unbranched pelvic-fin ray that reaches the anus; vertical bars visible on preserved specimens; a high predorsal scale count of 18–20; branched anal-fin rays numbering 17½–20½; a vertebral formula of 15–16 precaudal plus 18–20 caudal vertebrae; and a smooth lower jaw.
Like all Laubuka, the body is small and laterally compressed, with a keeled abdomen and an anteriorly positioned anal fin relative to the dorsal — a configuration typical of the genus. The pectoral fins are long and stiff with a falciform (sickle-shaped) profile, another genus-level character. Size data beyond the type series were not published at the time of this writing; congeners typically reach 1.5–2.5 in SL.
Habitat
The type locality of Laubuka sittaungensis is the Phyu Stream, a tributary of the Sittaung River in Bago Region, central Myanmar. The Sittaung is a medium-sized river draining south through the Bago Yoma range into the Gulf of Martaban, flowing through lowland and foothill terrain with seasonally variable flow.
Congeners in the genus Laubuka generally inhabit small tropical Asian streams with clay or stony substrates in lowland and low-forest settings, often in shallow runs with clear to slightly turbid water. On the basis of related species and the biogeography of the Sittaung basin, L. sittaungensis most likely occupies similar stream environments — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in a warm tropical climate. No specific water-chemistry measurements from the type locality were published in the primary description.
Feeding
No dietary data specific to Laubuka sittaungensis have been published. Genus-level and family-level feeding behaviour in small Asian danionins is well documented: members of Laubuka and related genera are opportunistic micropredators and omnivores, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and similar items — from the surface and water column, along with algae and organic detritus.
In an aquarium setting, L. sittaungensis would be expected to accept a range of small prepared foods — fine flakes and micro-pellets — as well as live and frozen offerings such as daphnia, artemia nauplii and bloodworm, consistent with the feeding strategy of congeners.
Mating
No specific reproductive observations have been published for Laubuka sittaungensis. The genus belongs to the danionin lineage, and all members of this group studied to date are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. There is no nest-building, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind.
In related small Asian cyprinids, spawning is typically triggered by warming water and rising water levels in the wet season. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief bursts of contact. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs settle among plants, roots or over gravel, after which the adults take no further interest in the spawn.
Breeding
No captive-breeding records for Laubuka sittaungensis have been published, and the species was described only in 2026 from museum specimens. Based on the biology of the genus and the broader danionin family, it can be expected to follow the standard pattern for small danio relatives: egg-scattering with no parental care, eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation, moss or over a gravel substrate, with adults removed after spawning to prevent predation on the spawn.
Were the species to become available in the aquarium trade, standard small-danionin breeding protocols would apply — a well-conditioned group in a separate shallow spawning tank with a plant mat or mesh base, a small temperature rise and water change to simulate seasonal cues, and removal of the adults after eggs are observed. Data on clutch size, incubation duration and larval development are presently unknown.
In the aquarium
Laubuka sittaungensis is not known to be in the ornamental fish trade as of its description in 2026. It was described from a small series of scientific specimens and has no established common name. Should it enter the hobby, its care requirements would parallel those of other small Laubuka and danionin cyprinids: a longer aquarium with clean, well-oxygenated water, a slightly acidic to neutral pH, a soft or moderately hard hardness profile, and water temperatures consistent with a warm tropical stream in central Myanmar — approximately 72–82 °F.
Like all small danionins, it would be expected to be a social, shoaling species best kept in a group of six or more. Its keeled, compressed body form suggests it is a water-column swimmer rather than a bottom-dweller. Tankmates should be similarly sized and non-aggressive. The long falciform pectoral fins that characterise the genus give Laubuka species an elegant, gliding movement in open water.
Conservation
Laubuka sittaungensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2026, it is currently Not Evaluated (NE). The Sittaung River basin faces significant anthropogenic pressures: deforestation in the Bago Yoma range, agricultural encroachment, and modification of stream channels for irrigation have reduced the extent and quality of suitable small-stream habitat across the drainage.
Many recently described, narrow-range Myanmar endemics are inherently vulnerable simply by virtue of their restricted distributions — a species known from a single tributary faces catastrophic loss of habitat from any localised disturbance. Whether L. sittaungensis has a wider distribution within the Sittaung system, or occurs in adjacent drainages, is not yet known. A formal IUCN assessment and additional field surveys across the Bago Region are priorities for understanding the conservation standing of this newly discovered fish.
