Laubuka tenella is a small, shimmering danio described in 2018 from a handful of shallow streams in the coastal drainage of Bangladesh and adjacent Myanmar — one of the most recently named members of a genus that bridges South and Southeast Asia. Reaching around 2 in in standard length, it is marked by short dark vertical bars on the front of the body and a distinct dark lateral band toward the rear, a pattern that sets it apart from its congeners. Known from only three collecting localities across two countries, this delicate, restricted-range fish has barely entered science, let alone the aquarium, but its discovery adds another thread to the growing picture of danionin diversity in the river systems of the Bay of Bengal coast.

Taxonomy & naming

Laubuka tenella was formally described by Kullander, Rahman, Norén and Mollah in 2018, published in ZooKeys (vol. 742: 105–126), with a holotype (DU 9004, 1.5 in SL) deposited from Domdomia stream, a tributary of the Naf River drainage in Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh. The description was based on specimens ranging from 1–2 in SL, with type material drawn from Bangladesh and a referred population from the Thandwe River drainage in Rakhine State, Myanmar.

The genus Laubuka is a danionin cyprinid lineage distributed across South and Southeast Asia, recognized for its elongate body and characteristic coloration. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid combination Laubuka tenella Kullander, Rahman, Norén & Mollah, 2018. The species name derives from Latin tenellus, a diminutive meaning 'delicate' or 'tender,' reflecting the fish's small size and soft-bodied appearance — see Etymology below.

No synonyms or prior combinations are known; this is a newly erected species with no recorded nomenclatural history beyond its original description. Its placement within Laubuka is consistent with the broad characters of the genus and was established by the original authors through morphological analysis.

Morphology

Laubuka tenella is a slim, laterally compressed danionin reaching approximately 2 in in standard length. FishBase records the lateral line scale count as 29–32, and the dorsal-fin formula as ii.8½. The original description gives a size range of 1–2 in SL across examined specimens, with the holotype at 1.5 in SL; AMAZONAS Magazine cites a maximum of around 2.5 in, suggesting the species may grow slightly larger in optimal conditions.

The colour pattern is distinctive within the genus: short, dark vertical bars mark the anterior body from behind the head, transitioning into a dark, continuous lateral band that extends along the posterior flank toward the caudal peduncle. This two-part pattern — anterior bars giving way to a lateral stripe — differentiates it from related species. AMAZONAS describes the overall effect as 'shimmering,' consistent with the iridescent lateral pigmentation typical of Laubuka. The pelvic fins are noted as relatively short compared to congeners. Detailed meristic counts for other fin rays and scale rows are given in the original description.

Habitat

The known habitat of Laubuka tenella is narrow in both geography and ecology. The original description records its collection from very shallow streams no wider than about 10 metres, with slightly turbid water and substrates of clay and stone in the Naf River drainage of Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh. Collections were made in the dry season, when water flow was minimal; during the monsoon, Kullander et al. note, water levels in these coastal drainages can rise several metres, temporarily transforming the habitat.

A second population in Rakhine State, Myanmar, was taken from a stagnant pool in a desiccated river bed with leaf litter and sandy substrate — a markedly different microhabitat from the Bangladesh sites, but equally marginal and seasonal. No water chemistry parameters (temperature, pH, hardness) are recorded in the available sources for the specific collecting sites; the coastal streams of the eastern Bay of Bengal region are generally soft to moderately hard and near-neutral, reflecting the influence of lowland tropical rainfall rather than limestone or mineral-rich geology. The species appears tolerant of low, turbid, seasonally variable conditions.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Laubuka tenella. Like other small danionin cyprinids, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — from the water column and surface, supplemented with algae, biofilm and organic particulates. The slightly upturned to terminal mouth typical of Laubuka suits mid-water and surface feeding in still or slow-moving water.

In an aquarium setting, comparable danionins and Laubuka species accept fine flake and micro-pellet foods readily, along with small live and frozen invertebrates such as daphnia, cyclops, and newly hatched brine shrimp. A varied diet supports good condition and natural coloration. Given the stagnant-pool and shallow-stream habitats from which it was collected, the species is unlikely to be a selective or demanding feeder.

Mating

Laubuka tenella has not been observed spawning in the wild or in captivity in the published literature. As a danionin cyprinid, it is expected to follow the standard egg-scattering reproductive strategy of the group. In typical danios and close relatives, a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over substrate, and the pair release eggs and milt simultaneously in a brief, tight press. The act is repeated multiple times over a spawning bout.

There is no pair bond, no courtship territory, and no nest. Spawning is generally cued by seasonal environmental change — the transition from dry to wet season, warming water, and rising levels — which in the case of Laubuka tenella would correspond to the onset of the monsoon in the Bay of Bengal coastal systems. The 'shimmering' iridescence noted by AMAZONAS may play a role in intraspecific recognition during courtship, as lateral-line iridescence is commonly heightened in spawning-ready males across the danionin group.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Laubuka tenella has been documented in the available literature. Based on its danionin affinities, it is an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, moss, roots or over gravel and sand substrate, with no parental care whatsoever; adults will consume their own eggs if not removed promptly after spawning.

For aquarists wishing to attempt breeding, the general danio approach is a reasonable starting point: a shallow, well-planted spawning tank with a fine mesh or dense moss to catch eggs out of the adults' reach, a slight rise in temperature, and the addition of fresh, soft water to simulate monsoon onset. A well-conditioned group kept in appropriate conditions is likely to spawn without deliberate intervention. Given the stagnant, turbid, low-gradient habitat of the known collecting sites, the species may be less demanding of fast-flowing, highly oxygenated conditions than montane danio species. Eggs and larvae would follow the developmental pattern typical of small tropical danios — hatching within two to three days, free-swimming larvae within a further day or two, initially requiring infusoria or powdered fry food before graduating to larger items.

In the aquarium

Laubuka tenella is a very recently described species that has received attention in specialist publications such as AMAZONAS Magazine (2018), which noted its potential for aquarium breeders. However, it remains essentially unknown in the hobby. No established care parameters exist in the published literature, and captive stocks are not recorded as widely available.

Based on its habitat — shallow, slightly turbid coastal streams and seasonal pools with clay-sand substrate — it is likely suited to a soft-to-moderately-hard, near-neutral water column at temperatures reflecting the tropical lowland coast of the Bay of Bengal, broadly in the range of 72–82 °F. As a shoaling fish, groups of six or more would be appropriate to replicate natural social behaviour. A well-planted tank with open mid-water swimming space and gentle filtration (to replicate minimal-flow dry-season conditions) is a reasonable biotope approximation. This is a small fish — under 2 in in most recorded specimens — and fine-mouthed, so food particle size matters. Compatibility with other small, peaceful fishes is expected. Its rarity and restricted natural range mean that captive reproduction, were it achieved, would carry conservation significance.

Conservation

Laubuka tenella has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026; it was described in 2018 and has not yet been formally evaluated. The IUCN search returns no current assessment for the species, which is typical for very recently described, restricted-range fishes from underworked drainages.

The biological picture, however, gives grounds for concern. The species is known from only three localities — two in the Cox's Bazar/Teknaf area of southeastern Bangladesh and one in Rakhine State, Myanmar. Cox's Bazar District has undergone rapid and ongoing land-use transformation, including deforestation, coastal development, agricultural expansion and intense population pressure; the Teknaf area, as one of Bangladesh's most biodiverse but also most heavily impacted coastal zones, faces severe habitat degradation. Rakhine State streams face similar pressures from agricultural intensification and political instability that hampers conservation intervention. The extremely limited known range, dependence on shallow coastal streams with low dry-season flow, and susceptibility of those microhabitats to siltation and water extraction all point to a genuinely restricted and potentially vulnerable fish that merits formal evaluation.
