Laubuka varuna is a slender danionin cyprinid endemic to a handful of west-flowing rainforest drainages in Sri Lanka — the Kelani and Kalu river systems — where it occupies cool, shaded streams among submergent vegetation and leaf litter. Named for the Sinhala word for 'western part of the island', it belongs to a clade of Sri Lankan Laubuka that mirrors the island's sharp west/east climatic divide, each species confined to its own basin. The species grows to roughly 2.5 in and is distinguished from its congeners by a complete lateral line of 31–33 scales, a relatively deep body and the absence of tubercles on the lower jaw. Classified as Endangered by the IUCN in 2022, it faces ongoing pressure from deforestation and the degradation of the wet-zone streams it depends on.

Taxonomy & naming

Laubuka varuna was formally described in 2008 by Pethiyagoda, Kottelat, Silva, Maduwage and Meegaskumbura, part of a landmark revision of Sri Lankan cyprinids that recognised several previously confused danionins as distinct species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Laubuka varuna Pethiyagoda, Kottelat, Silva, Maduwage & Meegaskumbura, 2008.

The genus name has historically appeared as Laubuca in older literature; modern taxonomy follows Laubuka. The genus belongs to the danionin tribe within Cyprinidae and is allied to the chelas and hatchet danios of South and Southeast Asia — small, surface-oriented schooling fishes with a sharply keeled ventral profile and an upturned mouth suited to feeding at the water surface. The genus spans India and Sri Lanka into Southeast Asia, with Sri Lanka harbouring several endemic species including L. lankensis, L. ruhuna and L. insularis, all of which show strong phylogeographic structuring between adjacent rainforest basins.

The species epithet varuna derives from the Sinhala word meaning 'western of the island', a direct reference to its restriction to the wet-zone river systems of western Sri Lanka — an unusually transparent etymology that encodes the fish's range in its name.

Morphology

Laubuka varuna is a moderately deep-bodied danionin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in — comparatively large for the genus. The body is laterally compressed and somewhat arched dorsally, with a strongly upturned mouth that places it firmly in the surface-feeding niche. The lateral line is complete, running from the opercle to the caudal peduncle with 31–33 principal scales plus 1–2 further scales on the caudal fin base, and body depth at the deepest point falls within 27.9–32.4% of standard length.

A key diagnostic character separating L. varuna from related Sri Lankan species is the smooth lower jaw: the dentary lacks the small bony tubercles that appear in some congeners. Coloration in life is typical of the genus — a silvery-blue body with a midlateral stripe or iridescent sheen, and the characteristic dorsal keeling between head and dorsal fin. Detailed colour notes from freshly collected specimens have not been widely published, and the species remains poorly known in live-fish documentation.

Habitat

Laubuka varuna is known only from the Kelani and Kalu river systems in the wet zone of western Sri Lanka — both are relatively short, fast rivers descending from the central highlands through some of the island's last remaining lowland rainforest. These streams are characterised by clear, well-oxygenated water, substrates of sand and leaf litter, overhanging riparian vegetation and a seasonal flow regime driven by the south-west monsoon.

Water chemistry data specific to L. varuna are not published. Based on the ecology of related Sri Lankan Laubuka species and the general character of wet-zone forest streams on the island, the species almost certainly inhabits soft, slightly acidic to neutral water — approximately pH 6.0–7.0 — at tropical stream temperatures broadly in the range of 75–79 °F, with modest hardness. The streams draining western Sri Lanka are distinct in character from the drier east-coast basins, and the species is entirely absent from those systems.

Feeding

No published dietary study exists for Laubuka varuna specifically. The upturned mouth, surface-oriented body posture and ecology of the genus indicate a diet dominated by terrestrial insects and invertebrates falling onto the water surface, supplemented by aquatic insects and small invertebrates taken from the water column — a pattern consistent with danionins generally and with surface-feeding cyprinids of forest-stream environments.

In the aquarium, related Laubuka species accept floating foods readily: small flakes, micropellets and live or frozen insects such as fruit flies and small crickets are taken eagerly. A varied diet including live and frozen invertebrates will maintain condition in captive fish.

Mating

Laubuka varuna is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the reproductive strategy universal in danionin cyprinids. No published account of spawning behaviour exists for this species in the wild, but by analogy with the genus and family it almost certainly spawns in shallow, vegetated stream margins, with males actively pursuing gravid females through submerged plants and releasing eggs and milt simultaneously.

There is no pair bond, no territory, no nest and no parental care beyond the spawning act itself. Adults will readily consume their own eggs. Natural spawning in Sri Lankan forest streams is likely triggered by the onset of the south-west monsoon, when rising water temperatures, increased flow and flooding of marginal vegetation provide the seasonal cue.

Breeding

No captive breeding report for Laubuka varuna has been published. Given the extreme rarity of the species in the aquarium trade — it is essentially unknown in hobby fishkeeping outside Sri Lanka — there is little husbandry documentation to draw on. By analogy with the closely related L. lankensis and broader Laubuka species kept occasionally by specialist hobbyists, the species can be expected to scatter adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, roots or gravel in a shallow, well-planted tank, with adults removed promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Eggs would likely hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later and accepting small live foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp. The species' Endangered status makes any captive propagation by specialist keepers potentially valuable for ex-situ conservation purposes.

In the aquarium

Laubuka varuna is not a species in regular trade. Its Endangered status, narrow endemic range in Sri Lankan rainforest streams and the lack of established captive populations mean it is effectively absent from the commercial aquarium hobby outside occasional collection by local Sri Lankan enthusiasts. Any fish available would almost certainly be wild-caught, which raises significant conservation concerns given the species' restricted range and threatened habitat.

For hobbyists with access to captive-bred specimens, a setup reflecting soft, warm, well-oxygenated forest-stream conditions would be appropriate: a longer tank with gentle circulation, subdued lighting, abundant fine-leaved planting or floating cover, and a dark substrate to bring out the fish's natural coloration. As a surface-oriented schooling fish it should be kept in groups of at least six to eight. It would be poorly suited to a general community tank with boisterous or fast-moving tankmates.

Conservation

Laubuka varuna is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dating from 2022. The listing reflects the species' extremely limited range — confined to the Kelani and Kalu drainages in western Sri Lanka — and the ongoing degradation and loss of lowland rainforest streams throughout its extent of occurrence.

Sri Lanka's wet-zone lowlands have experienced severe deforestation and agricultural encroachment over decades, and the rivers draining them are affected by sedimentation, pollution from agrochemicals, water extraction and the removal of riparian vegetation. The Kelani in particular flows through one of the most densely settled and industrialised corridors on the island, placing additional pressure on stream habitats used by L. varuna in its lower reaches. The species receives no targeted conservation attention and does not benefit from captive assurance populations. Its future depends on the retention of intact forest cover over the headwaters and middle reaches of its two known river systems.
