Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora borneensis was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1860, making it one of the earlier Bornean cyprinids to receive a formal description during Bleeker's extraordinarily productive career cataloguing Asian fish diversity. The type locality is the Kapuas Lakes area of western Borneo, now administered as Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Rasbora borneensis Bleeker, 1860 as the valid combination; GBIF confirms this placement.
The genus Rasbora has historically been a wastebasket taxon, and a succession of revisions since the 1990s carved several smaller genera out of it — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Rasboroides, and others were elevated or resurrected to accommodate groups that Rasbora sensu lato had absorbed. Rasbora borneensis remains in the core Rasbora assemblage and has not been moved by these revisions. No subspecies or synonyms are in common use for this species.
Morphology
Rasbora borneensis is a moderately elongate cyprinid reaching up to 3 in standard length — considerably larger than the popular aquarium rasboras of the Trigonostigma or Boraras groups. Like most Rasbora, it has a fusiform, laterally compressed body, a small terminal or slightly upturned mouth, and the paired rostral and maxillary barbels typical of the genus (though barbel development varies across the group).
FishBase records that sexual dimorphism is present, expressed in different morphometric ratios between males and females rather than striking coloration differences — a pattern common in Rasbora, where gravid females are typically deeper-bodied. Detailed external coloration notes are sparse in the available literature; the species presumably shows the silvery to olive-gold flanks and pale underparts characteristic of large Bornean Rasbora.
Habitat
Rasbora borneensis is endemic to the freshwaters of southern and western Borneo, with confirmed records from the Kapuas mainstream and the associated Kapuas Lakes system in West Kalimantan. The Kapuas is the longest river in Indonesian Borneo and drains a vast lowland basin that includes extensive blackwater and peat-swamp systems typical of the Sundaland lowlands.
The species is described as benthopelagic, occupying the water column above the bottom in the main river and its lake extensions. It enters the Kapuas Lakes during the wet season, likely moving into flooded marginal habitat as water levels rise, a pattern shared by many large Bornean cyprinids. Habitat notes associate it with blackwater systems and peat-influenced rivers where water is soft, acidic, and tannin-stained — conditions typical of low-mineral Sundaland substrates. Related Bornean Rasbora have been collected at pH values of 4.0 or below in undisturbed peat swamp, though the Kapuas mainstream itself may be less extreme.
Feeding
Specific dietary studies on Rasbora borneensis are not available in the published literature, and FishBase does not list stomach-content data for this species. Based on its body size, mouth structure, and the general ecology of large Rasbora in Bornean lowlands, it is likely a micropredator in the wild — consuming small insects and their aquatic larvae, zooplankton, small crustaceans, and worms.
In the aquarium, rasboras of comparable size accept a wide range of prepared foods including quality flake and small pellets, augmented by live and frozen items such as daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. Small mouth size relative to body length is characteristic of the group, so finely particulate or appropriately sized offerings are preferable.
Mating
No published spawning observations specific to Rasbora borneensis are available. Like all Rasbora and the broader danionin assemblage, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental care. In nature, spawning in lowland Bornean cyprinids is often cued by the onset of the wet season, when rising water temperatures, increased water volume, and flooding of marginal vegetation create the conditions that trigger reproduction.
Courtship in Rasbora typically involves an active male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or open water, the pair releasing eggs and milt in a brief, close-contact embrace. Adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs fall among plants, roots, or substrate, and the adults show no further interest in them.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Rasbora borneensis has not been documented in the hobby literature, and the species is rarely if ever available in the aquarium trade. In principle, large Rasbora from Bornean blackwater systems can be spawned in soft, acidic, tannin-stained water at temperatures in the mid to upper twenties Celsius, using fine-leaved plants or a substrate mesh to protect eggs from the adults after spawning.
As with other egg-scattering cyprinids, adults should be removed after spawning since they will eat eggs and fry. Larvae would likely require fine foods such as infusoria or commercial fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The scarcity of this species in the trade means practical husbandry data remain limited.
In the aquarium
Rasbora borneensis is not an established aquarium fish and is unlikely to be encountered in the general hobby trade. Its large size — up to 3 in — and presumed blackwater preferences make it a fish better suited to specialist biotope setups than to a typical community tank. A Kapuas biotope aquarium, using soft acidic water with a pH toward the low end of the neutral range, tannin-stained with dried leaves or peat, and decorated with wood and fine-leaved plants, would reflect its natural environment.
Given its benthopelagic habit and probable schooling tendencies in the wild, a spacious tank with open mid-water swimming space and subdued lighting would be appropriate. Tankmates should be other soft-water Bornean fish tolerant of acidic conditions. Dietary requirements are straightforward for a cyprinid of this size, but the specialist nature of its water chemistry requirements limits its appeal to experienced keepers with a specific interest in Bornean ichthyofauna.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rasbora borneensis as Least Concern in January 2019, noting its presence in southern and western Borneo without evidence of range-wide decline severe enough to trigger a threatened category. However, its apparent restriction to the Kapuas basin places it squarely within one of the most habitat-threatened freshwater regions in Southeast Asia.
Borneo's lowland peat-swamp forests, which filter and buffer the blackwater systems that many endemic Rasbora depend on, have been extensively converted for palm oil cultivation, timber extraction, and subsistence agriculture over recent decades. The Kapuas basin has not been immune to these pressures. While the species' current IUCN status reflects a lack of quantitative evidence of decline rather than confirmed security, its endemic range and association with peat-influenced systems warrant continued monitoring as land-use change in Kalimantan proceeds.
