Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora hosii was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1895, with type localities in the Kapuas Basin of what is now West Kalimantan, Indonesia — specifically the Siniai River, Jaguh River, Stom Muda River and Lanjak River. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Rasbora hosii Boulenger, 1895.
The species has a complicated taxonomic history in that Bornean fishes once identified as Rasbora sumatrana have since been reidentified as R. hosii or as yet-undescribed species, confirming that West Kalimantan is the core of its range. The genus Rasbora sensu lato has been extensively revised since the early 2000s, with numerous satellite genera carved out — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia, Rasboroides and others — but R. hosii remains in Rasbora under current usage. The species has no widely established aquarium trade name.
Morphology
Rasbora hosii is a moderately large rasbora, recorded to at least 3 in standard length (SL) in unsexed adults — making it considerably larger than the diminutive peat-swamp rasboras of the same island. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, typical of the pelagic-active members of Rasbora, with a subterminal mouth and the delicate scalation common to the genus.
Detailed colour descriptions from wild-caught specimens are not well documented in the aquarium literature. As with most Bornean stream rasboras, the flanks are likely silver with a lateral stripe or iridescent banding, and males may be slimmer than females; however, specific dimorphic colouration data for R. hosii remain sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
Rasbora hosii is known from small, flowing creeks within the Kapuas Basin of West Kalimantan, Borneo. FishBase records it as benthopelagic in streams with flowing water, often over stony substrate — suggesting moderately fast, well-oxygenated conditions under forest cover rather than the stagnant blackwater peat swamps occupied by smaller congeners such as Boraras or Trigonopoma.
However, West Kalimantan's forest streams carry the imprint of the broader Sundaland environment: soils are typically nutrient-poor and acidic, run-off is tannin-stained, and water hardness is very low. Academic work on the Bornean ichthyofauna confirms that the region's streams are soft and acidic, with peat influence common even in flowing lotic habitats. Precise temperature and pH measurements from R. hosii collection sites are not available in current sources, but conditions typical of Bornean lowland forest streams — temperatures in the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius, pH in the acidic range, very low hardness — are the expected baseline.
Feeding
Rasbora hosii is presumed to be an omnivore in the manner of most stream rasboras, consuming small invertebrates — aquatic insects and larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — alongside surface-fallen terrestrial prey and organic detritus in its forest-stream habitat. Its benthopelagic classification suggests it feeds across the water column rather than being strictly a surface or bottom feeder.
In the aquarium, captive rasboras of comparable size and habit adapt readily to small live and frozen foods (Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm) and accept quality dried foods once settled. Providing a varied diet supports condition and natural behaviour in a species that would encounter diverse prey types in a productive Bornean forest stream.
Mating
Rasbora hosii is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courtship follows the pattern typical of the genus: a driving male pursues a gravid female actively through vegetation and open water, the pair pressing together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. There is no nest construction, no territory defence and no pair bond that persists beyond the spawning act itself.
The eggs — weakly adhesive or non-adhesive — are distributed over fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots or the stream substrate, and adults will consume them if access is not prevented. Specific spawning observations for R. hosii in aquarium conditions have not been widely documented in the hobby literature, but the reproductive mode is consistent with other members of the genus.
Breeding
No detailed breeding account for Rasbora hosii appears to be established in the aquarium hobby, reflecting the species' rarity in the trade. By analogy with closely related stream rasboras of comparable size, a separate, dimly lit breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a substrate mesh to protect scattered eggs would be the appropriate approach. Soft, warm, slightly acidic water replicating the Bornean stream environment should be used to condition breeders and encourage spawning.
As with all rasboras, adults should be removed after spawning, as they will readily consume their own eggs. Eggs are expected to hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming shortly after and requiring infusoria-sized first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Given the species' rarity in captivity, any successful breeding would represent a valuable contribution to hobby knowledge.
In the aquarium
Rasbora hosii is encountered only occasionally in the aquarium trade and is not a mainstream hobby species, but its moderate size (to over 3 in) and schooling nature make it an interesting subject for a Bornean biotope display. A group of at least six individuals is recommended — as a social, open-water schooling fish it is stressed in small numbers. Tankmates should be chosen from the same faunal zone: other West Kalimantan stream species, smaller Bornean loaches or, where species mixing is acceptable, comparably sized rasboras from Sundaic habitats.
Water chemistry should prioritise softness and mild acidity to replicate Kapuas Basin stream conditions: very low hardness, pH in the range 5.5–7.0, and temperatures typical of lowland Bornean forest (roughly 75–82 °F). Subdued lighting, tannin-stained water with driftwood and leaf litter, and gentle flow will best suit a species from shaded Bornean creeks. Like most stream rasboras, it is an active mid-water swimmer that appreciates open space alongside planted margins.
Conservation
Rasbora hosii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment), with populations considered stable within its West Kalimantan range. Its occurrence across multiple river systems within the Kapuas Basin provides a degree of distributional security that single-basin endemics lack.
Nonetheless, West Kalimantan has experienced intense deforestation, agricultural expansion — particularly oil palm — and peatland drainage over recent decades, all of which degrade the forest-stream habitats on which small endemic fishes depend. Although R. hosii is not currently classified as threatened, the broader trajectory for Sundaic freshwater biodiversity is one of ongoing pressure, and the resilience of restricted Bornean endemics warrants continued monitoring.
