Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora volzii was described by C.M.L. Popta in 1905, based on material collected from the middle and upper Kapuas and Mahakam drainages of Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Rasbora volzii Popta, 1905, with no subsequent generic transfer on record.
The genus Rasbora has undergone substantial revision over the past three decades. Kottelat and Witte (1999) and later workers carved out several genera from the old, broadly defined Rasbora — Trigonostigma, Trigonopoma, Boraras, Brevibora, Rasboroides and others were separated — leaving Rasbora sensu stricto as a still-diverse assemblage of mainly medium-sized stream fishes. Rasbora volzii has remained within the residual Rasbora through these revisions and is not known to have been placed in any of the segregated genera.
The species epithet volzii honours the collector or dedicatee of the type material; the precise etymology is not recorded in accessible secondary literature.
Morphology
Rasbora volzii is one of the larger rasboras recorded from Borneo, with FishBase citing a maximum total length of 5 in. Like most members of the genus, it is a slender, fusiform, laterally compressed fish suited to open water swimming in streams and rivers.
Detailed colour descriptions are sparse in the secondary literature available. Bornean stream rasboras of comparable size typically display a silvery or golden-flanked body with a dark lateral stripe or midlateral marking that runs from the head toward the caudal peduncle, and this family-level pattern is consistent across many Rasbora species of the region. Specific pigmentation and fin details for R. volzii await more thorough description in accessible monographic work. The species' relatively large adult size distinguishes it from the diminutive Bornean rasboras of the aquarium trade.
Habitat
Rasbora volzii is a freshwater, benthopelagic species native to the Kapuas and Mahakam river systems of Borneo — two of the island's major river drainages, draining the interior highlands of West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan respectively. Its range extends into Sarawak, Malaysia. These are predominantly lowland and mid-elevation tropical rivers with extensive tributary networks and associated forest streams.
Related Bornean Rasbora species, including R. sarawakensis, are characteristically found in slow-moving to moderately flowing forest streams with dense overhanging and marginal vegetation, shaded canopies, and substrates of sand, leaf litter and fallen timber. The genus in Borneo broadly tolerates soft to moderately hard water and slightly acidic to near-neutral pH conditions, reflecting the mineral-poor, often tannin-stained character of forest streams on the island's ancient geological substrate. No specific water chemistry data for R. volzii itself has been published in the secondary literature.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies of Rasbora volzii are absent from available literature. Rasbora species of comparable size and habitat from Bornean and Sundaic systems are generalised omnivores and opportunistic feeders, taking invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface — alongside algae, plant material and organic detritus. The species is a member of a genus of egg-scattering, non-guarding cyprinids in which spawning is characterised by the driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or open water, the pair releasing eggs and milt in brief, closely pressed passes.

As an egg-scattering cyprinid, it would be expected to scatter adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, moss, roots or sandy substrate, with no parental care following spawning. Adults of most Rasbora species will consume their own eggs given the opportunity, so separation of eggs from adults after spawning would be standard practice.
Its relatively large adult size — up to 5 in — means that breeding in the home aquarium would require a spacious, well-planted tank and a conditioned group of adults. The absence of captive-breeding records for this species in accessible literature reflects its rarity in the hobby rather than any fundamental reproductive peculiarity.
In the aquarium
Rasbora volzii is a rare species in the aquarium trade and is not commonly encountered in hobbyist circles. Its large adult size — approaching 5 in — means that any keeper who does obtain it would need a spacious aquarium, considerably larger than those suited to the small rasboras of the trade such as harlequins or lambchop rasboras.
Based on its natural habitat in Bornean forest streams, a suitable setup would feature soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, subdued lighting, tannin staining from driftwood or leaf litter, and ample open swimming space for a fish of its build. It would be expected to thrive as a shoaling species kept in groups, as is typical of the genus. Given the scarcity of published captive-care information, keepers who obtain this species would be contributing genuinely useful observations to the hobby.
Conservation
Rasbora volzii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation completed on 17 January 2019. The species is considered widespread within its Bornean range across the Kapuas and Mahakam drainages and into Sarawak, with no evidence of major population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category under current criteria.
Nevertheless, the freshwater biodiversity of Borneo faces significant and ongoing pressures. Deforestation — for timber, oil palm plantations and pulpwood — removes the riparian forest cover that shades, cools and structurally maintains the stream habitats on which species like R. volzii depend. Sedimentation from land clearing elevates turbidity and smothers substrates, while agricultural runoff introduces fertilisers and pesticides into river networks. These pressures are concentrated in the lowland zones of both Kalimantan and Sarawak where much of the island's floodplain and stream fish diversity is found. The LC assessment reflects current population status rather than immunity to the habitat degradation affecting Borneo's freshwaters broadly.
