Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora daniconius was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822, making it one of the earlier cyprinids to enter the scientific literature. The valid combination is Rasbora daniconius (Hamilton, 1822) per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the parenthetical authority indicating the species was moved from Hamilton's original generic placement.
The epithet daniconius reflects Hamilton's perception that the fish resembled a danio — it means, roughly, 'danio-like', and the common name 'green slender rasbora' found in the UK trade nods to both its build and the faint olive tones on the back. The genus Rasbora has been substantially revised over the past few decades: Kottelat & Witte (1999) and subsequent authors carved out Trigonostigma, Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora and other segregates, leaving a slimmed-down Rasbora for elongate, slender species such as this one. Rasbora daniconius itself has not been transferred to any of those new genera and remains in Rasbora in current usage.
The Biotope Aquarium Project records the type locality as Saadhi Koodu Madugu in the Nagalapuram Hills of India, within the Kalangi River drainage — a southern Indian provenance that underlines the species' wide natural range from the subcontinent into mainland Southeast Asia.
Morphology
R. daniconius is a slim, cylindrical fish with a moderately pointed snout and a terminal to slightly upturned mouth suited to mid-water feeding. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, tapering to a forked caudal fin. FishBase records a maximum total length of 6 in, though the fish is commonly encountered at around 3 in in the wild and in the aquarium.
Colouration is silvery overall, with an olive-gold wash on the back and a narrow, dark lateral stripe running from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle, often bordered above by a thin golden line. The fins are largely hyaline. The metallic flank sheen is most apparent under direct light. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: females become noticeably deeper-bodied and more rounded in the belly when gravid, while males remain slimmer and more torpedo-shaped.
Habitat
The slender rasbora occupies a broad range of freshwater and brackish-influenced habitats across South and Southeast Asia. FishBase lists it as benthopelagic, found in the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Salween basins, the northern Malay Peninsula and westward across the subcontinent to the Indus system and Sri Lanka. The Biotope Aquarium Project notes occurrences in clear-water streams with medium sediment and still to slow-flowing conditions in the Indian hills.
Temperature preferences logged by FishBase sit between 24 and 79 °F (preferred), within a broader tolerance range of 64–82 °F. The species tolerates a wide range of water chemistry: hobbyist sources report it accepts soft to slightly hard water, pH 6.0–7.0, with hardness up to around 12 dH, though its continental range across river systems of varying chemistry suggests considerable plasticity. It is not a peat-swamp blackwater specialist in the manner of many Sundaland rasboras.
Feeding
R. daniconius is an omnivore and active opportunist, feeding in the mid-water column on small invertebrates, insect larvae and whatever organic particles the current carries past. Its terminal to slightly upturned mouth suits interception feeding in moving water rather than grubbing at the bottom.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to a varied diet. Good-quality flake and small micropellets form a reliable staple; conditioning is improved with regular offerings of frozen or live foods such as mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and daphnia. Fast and competitive at feeding, it does well when food is distributed across the tank to ensure slower tankmates receive their share.
Mating
Like all rasboras of its type, R. daniconius is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no pair bond and no parental care — the adults scatter eggs and abandon them entirely. In good condition, a driving male pursues a gravid female through mid-water and among plants, the pair releasing eggs and milt in a brief, close-contact pass.
The species is diurnal and group-living, and spawning activity is most readily triggered by a combination of warmer water, a partial water change with slightly cooler, fresh water, and the presence of fine-leaved vegetation or a moss layer that the eggs can fall into and be partially hidden from the parents.
Breeding
Breeding R. daniconius follows the standard egg-scatterer protocol. A separate, shallow breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or a spawning mop, or a mesh base so eggs fall out of reach, is recommended. A conditioned pair or small group is introduced, and a modest rise in temperature or partial fresh-water change often triggers spawning.
Hobbyist accounts record spawning yields of 200–300 adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, with hatching occurring roughly three to four days after fertilisation. Adults should be removed after spawning as they will readily consume the eggs. The larvae become free-swimming a few days after hatching and accept infusoria and micro-worms initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.
In the aquarium
R. daniconius is a rewarding, underused aquarium fish, well suited to a larger community tank where its speed and size can be properly expressed. Because it reaches up to 6 in (though commonly around 3 in in captivity), it needs a tank of at least four feet in length to allow the open swimming runs it prefers. A dark substrate, bogwood and mixed planting recreate the stream-margin biotopes from which it comes and show the fish's flank lustre to best effect.
It is a confirmed shoaling species — keeping a minimum of six, and ideally more, is essential. Isolated individuals or pairs become nervous and may harass tankmates; a proper shoal channels this energy within the group. Despite its modest colouration it is an alert, fast-moving fish, and an expert jumper — a tight-fitting lid is a practical necessity. It is easy to feed and not demanding of water conditions within the parameters noted above, making it a good choice for fishkeepers who want an active, natural-looking shoal without the need for highly specialised water preparation.
Conservation
Rasbora daniconius is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment), reflecting its wide distribution across South and Southeast Asia and stable populations across much of its range. Its tolerance of varied water conditions and habitats, including brackish-influenced margins, gives it resilience that more specialised, single-basin species lack.
Longer-term pressures across its range include pollution, agricultural runoff and wetland modification throughout the densely populated river plains of the Indian subcontinent and mainland Southeast Asia, as well as deforestation in hill-stream catchments. None of these pressures has yet produced evidence of population-level decline across the species as a whole, but regional subpopulations in degraded or severely impacted drainages may be locally reduced.
