Clarias batrachus, the walking catfish, is a large, scaleless, air-breathing predator from South and Southeast Asia that can reach 18.5 in in the wild and has become infamous as an invasive species across Florida and parts of the tropics. It is routinely sold as a small, appealing juvenile and grows into a robust, long-lived fish that demands a pond-scale system — one of the clearest examples of the size trap in the aquarium trade. It can breathe atmospheric air through a modified suprabranchial organ, survive for extended periods out of water, and migrate overland on its stiff pectoral spines, all of which make it both biologically extraordinary and a serious concern if released. Its skin is naked and scaleless, making it sensitive to copper and many standard medications, and its serrated pectoral spines lock erect and can snag nets and jab the keeper painfully; it is best moved in a container.

Taxonomy & naming

Clarias batrachus was described by Carl Linnaeus in his landmark tenth edition of Systema Naturae in 1758, one of the earliest formal descriptions of an Asian freshwater catfish. The type locality is Java, Indonesia, though the species' natural range is considerably broader across South and Southeast Asia. It belongs to the family Clariidae — the walking catfishes and airbreathing catfishes — within the order Siluriformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Clarias batrachus as the valid name.

The genus Clarias is large, encompassing both African and Asian species — a distribution that reflects the group's ancient origins. The epithet batrachus is Greek for 'frog', an allusion to the species' broad, flattened head and its ability to survive and move across land, frog-like, when water bodies dry up or become unsuitable. Historical references placed the species under Silurus and other old genera before Clarias became the accepted name; Linnaeus's original combination was Silurus batrachus.

Morphology

The walking catfish has a long, eel-like body with a continuous dorsal fin running most of the length of the back, a flattened head with a wide mouth, and four pairs of barbels — one maxillary pair on the upper jaw and three pairs (nasal and two mandibular) below — that give it a whiskered appearance. Adults are typically an even grey to olive-brown, sometimes with small pale spots; an albino form (white or pinkish) has been widely produced in the aquarium trade and the food-fish industry. The skin is completely naked, bearing no scales, which is characteristic of the family.

Reported maximum size is 18.5 in total length (FishBase), with common length around 10 in; captive fish routinely reach 17.5–23.5 in under good conditions, and large wild individuals are heavier than that figure suggests, with maximum weight around 1.2 kg. The pectoral fins carry a serrated spine that can be locked erect; these spines are stiff enough to give painful jabs and to anchor the fish as it moves across muddy ground, but are not venomous in this species. The suprabranchial organ — a dendritic, vascularised structure above the gill arches — allows the fish to breathe atmospheric oxygen directly, enabling it to survive in poorly oxygenated water and to remain viable out of water for hours.

Habitat

Clarias batrachus is native to South and Southeast Asia: India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia are all within its natural range. It is a fish of lowland tropical environments — slow-moving streams, swamps, ponds, marshes, ditches, rice paddies, and stagnant muddy water — and it tolerates conditions that would kill most other fish: low oxygen, high turbidity, warm temperatures, and wide pH swings.

The species undergoes seasonal movements across the landscape in Southeast Asia, migrating between permanent water bodies and seasonally flooded areas as monsoon rains rise and fall. This overland mobility, combined with its air-breathing capability, makes it exceptionally adaptable. The temperature range recorded by FishBase spans 50–82 °F, but optimal conditions for growth and behaviour lie in the warm tropical range. In water chemistry it is flexible: pH 5.5–8.0 and hardness 2–25 °dH bracket the conditions it tolerates in the aquarium (Seriously Fish).

Feeding

Clarias batrachus is a voracious, opportunistic omnivore with a strong predatory streak. In the wild it takes invertebrates, smaller fish, frogs, plant material, carrion, and virtually anything organic it encounters — it feeds largely at night, using its sensitive barbels to locate prey in murky, dark water. Any fish or aquatic animal small enough to be engulfed will be eaten; it is a true ambush and pursuit predator at scale.

In the aquarium the practical consequence is straightforward: tankmates must be too large to fit in the walking catfish's wide mouth, which at full adult size means very large fish indeed. It accepts large pellets formulated for predatory catfish or carnivores, whole prawns, pieces of mussel, and similar meaty foods. Younger fish will take cichlid or catfish pellets readily. It is not fussy and rarely refuses food; the greater challenge is preventing overconsumption and managing the heavy waste load a large active predator produces.

Mating

In nature, Clarias batrachus reproduces during the monsoon season when water levels rise and inundated areas provide shelter and food for developing fry. Pairs form and spawn in substrate pits or flooded marginal areas; spawning is vigorous and produces several thousand eggs in a single event. Commercial aquaculture facilities and ornamental fish farms in Southeast Asia use hormonal induction to bring ripe fish into breeding condition outside the natural cycle, and large-scale production of both food fish and the albino aquarium strain relies almost entirely on this hormone-induced approach.

In practice, home breeding of Clarias batrachus is not a realistic goal for most keepers. The fish grows far too large for the tank sizes where breeding behaviour can be triggered, hormone injection is required to reliably induce spawning outside the monsoon trigger, and the scale of production needed to raise a clutch of thousands of fry is beyond most home setups. Serious Fish confirms that captive breeding on any meaningful scale requires induced spawning.

Breeding

When spawning is induced — whether by seasonal cues in a large outdoor pond or by hormonal injection at a farm — the male courts the female and both fish dig or select a shallow substrate pit for egg deposition. The eggs are adhesive and laid in the nest; the male provides some initial guarding in the hours following spawning, and both parents attend the brood for roughly 72 hours post-hatch while the fry are immobile, before the young become free-swimming and disperse.

This level of parental attention is unusual in catfish and places Clarias batrachus in a minority among the family. In practice, however, the reproductive biology is academic for the vast majority of aquarium keepers: the species is a farmed fish, bred commercially at scale using hormone protocols, and the albino form in particular is almost entirely a product of Southeast Asian fish farms. The home aquarist is a customer of that production system, not a participant in breeding the species.

In the aquarium

The most important fact about keeping Clarias batrachus is its adult size. Juveniles are small, active, and inexpensive, which is exactly why this species has become a textbook example of the aquarium size trap — the fish sold at 3–4 in in a pet shop will reach 17.5–23.5 in in captivity and live for well over a decade. A single adult walking catfish requires a tank of at least 130–185 US gal (approximately 130–185 US gallons) as an absolute minimum, and a pond or large public-aquarium-scale system is genuinely more appropriate. Most domestic aquaria cannot house an adult specimen humanely.

Clarias batrachus is scaleless, which is the single most important care note for medication. Naked-skinned catfish are significantly more sensitive to copper-based treatments, organophosphates, and many antiparasitic medications than scaled fish — in any treatment the dose should be reduced and the fish monitored closely. Standard guidance is to use half the stated dose and observe before proceeding.

The walking catfish must be housed in a tightly covered tank. It can breathe air and move overland; it will escape through any gap in the hood, and escape in a warm climate can lead to the fish surviving and establishing itself in local waterways — a scenario that has caused serious ecological damage in Florida, where feral populations have been established since the 1960s. Never release this species. The pectoral spines are serrated and lock erect; do not attempt to net the fish — use a bucket or container to move it, or you risk both injury to yourself and damage to the fish. The spines are not venomous in this species, but the mechanical injury from a locked spine is significant.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Clarias batrachus as Least Concern in 2019. The species is widespread across South and Southeast Asia, tolerates a wide range of habitat conditions, and is produced in enormous quantities in aquaculture, so there are no major threats to the global population. Aquaculture production — both for food and for the ornamental trade — is the dominant supply source; it is not primarily a wild-collected fish in the aquarium trade.

However, the IUCN assessment notes a troubling internal dynamic: populations of native Clarias batrachus in parts of its Asian range are becoming genetically eroded by introgression from the African Clarias gariepinus, which has been widely introduced across Asia for aquaculture and has hybridised with the native species. In parts of Thailand and Southeast Asia the native pure-bred batrachus lineage may be declining even as the hybrid/invasive complex flourishes. Outside its native range, Clarias batrachus is itself a damaging invasive: in Florida (USA) established feral populations have persisted since the 1960s and have required active management. It is listed as an invasive species of concern in multiple jurisdictions, and any release from captivity is illegal in many countries.
