Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora ennealepis was described by the ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1989, with the type locality recorded as the Sungai Sekumpai, a tributary of the Sungai Pinoh, approximately 14 mi south of Nangapinoh in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Rasbora ennealepis Roberts, 1989 as the currently valid combination, and the species has been confirmed under that name across multiple subsequent taxonomic treatments including those by Kottelat, Doi, and Parenti.
The species is placed in the subfamily Rasborinae, family Danionidae — the same broad grouping that contains the true danios, zebrafish and a wide diversity of Southeast Asian small cyprinids. Within the large genus Rasbora, which has undergone considerable revision since the late 1990s (with Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides carved out of it), R. ennealepis remains in Rasbora sensu stricto. No junior synonyms are recorded. The species epithet ennealepis alludes to a scale characteristic noted by Roberts in the original description.
Morphology
Rasbora ennealepis is a small, slender rasbora with a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. Like most rasborine cyprinids it has a streamlined, laterally compressed body well suited to life in moderately flowing forest streams. Detailed colouration data in the available literature is sparse, but the species shares the typical Rasbora body plan: a subterminal to terminal mouth, relatively large eye, silvery flanks, and a dark lateral stripe or midlateral pigmentation pattern.
Further morphological details — exact fin ray counts, scale formulae, and the specific lateral-line scale count implied by the epithet ennealepis — are recorded in Roberts' original 1989 description. No long-finned or colour morphs are documented from captivity, and the species is not widely maintained or bred in the hobby, so information on sexual dimorphism is limited. Females of most Rasbora species are visibly deeper-bodied than males when gravid, and this is likely the case for R. ennealepis.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the freshwater systems of western Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo), with its type locality in the Sungai Pinoh drainage — a lowland river system in West Kalimantan province. Borneo's freshwater fish fauna is extraordinarily diverse and dominated by the rivers draining the Sunda shelf, many of which flow through lowland dipterocarp rainforest and associated peat-swamp ecosystems.
Specific water chemistry data for R. ennealepis was not captured in targeted searches, but its Bornean lowland-stream habitat context strongly suggests a preference for soft, slightly acidic, often tannin-stained waters typical of the Sundaland bioregion — conditions reflecting the high rainfall and low-buffering geology of the region's alluvial plains. Temperatures in these lowland forest streams and peat-swamp margins are typically in the range of 72–82 °F year-round. The species is classified as benthopelagic by FishBase.
Feeding
No specific dietary studies on Rasbora ennealepis are documented in the available literature. As with most small rasboras, it is presumed to be an omnivore and micropredator, feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and organic particulates in its native streams.
In the aquarium, small-mouthed rasboras of similar size accept standard small prepared foods — fine flakes, micro-pellets — supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates such as daphnia and baby brine shrimp, which support conditioning and colour. Varied feeding is particularly important for wild-caught or F1 individuals of seldom-kept species.
Mating
Rasbora ennealepis has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the available literature. Based on its phylogenetic placement within Rasbora — and the consistent reproductive biology across the genus — it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of any kind.
In typical rasbora reproduction, a gravid female is pursued by one or more males through vegetation; the pair press together momentarily and release eggs and milt together in short bursts. Spawning in Bornean lowland streams is likely linked to seasonal water-level fluctuations and associated changes in temperature and water chemistry, with the onset of the rainy season often acting as a spawning trigger for many cyprinids in the region.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Rasbora ennealepis have been located in the available literature or the hobbyist database. As a seldom-exported Kalimantan endemic, it rarely appears in the trade and is essentially unknown in aquaria.
By analogy with related Bornean and Sundaland rasboras, a separate breeding setup with fine-leaved plants or java moss over a substrate that allows eggs to sink out of the parents' reach would be the appropriate starting point. Eggs and fry would be expected to follow the typical rasbora pattern: scattered adhesive eggs, with the adults removed immediately after spawning to prevent predation; hatching likely within two to three days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later. Any successful breeding records for this species from the hobby would be genuinely valuable.
In the aquarium
Rasbora ennealepis is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade and is not maintained in hobbyist aquaria in any significant numbers. It is an obscure Kalimantan endemic whose primary documentation exists in the scientific literature. Any specimens that did enter the aquarium hobby would best be kept in soft, slightly acidic water — pH around 5.5–6.5, temperatures 72–79 °F — replicating the tannin-stained Bornean lowland conditions of its native streams.
Small, peaceful, shoaling rasboras of this size class do well in planted aquaria with low-to-moderate flow, gentle filtration, and the addition of leaf litter or peat to lower pH and add tannins. They should be kept in groups of at least six to display natural social behaviour. Given the conservation status of this species, any hobbyist maintaining it should treat captive breeding as a priority.
Conservation
Rasbora ennealepis is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment), reflecting genuine concern about the trajectory of its limited Kalimantan range. The species is endemic to western Borneo — a biodiversity hotspot where freshwater habitats have faced severe and accelerating pressure from agricultural conversion (particularly oil palm expansion), logging, peat-swamp drainage, sand extraction, and the associated degradation of water quality in lowland river systems.
Its restricted known range in the Sungai Pinoh drainage makes it inherently vulnerable to localised impacts. Bornean freshwater fishes as a group are significantly under-surveyed, and many species with limited formal distribution data are likely more threatened than their Red List assessments reflect. No specific conservation programmes targeting R. ennealepis are documented; the most effective conservation measure remains the protection and restoration of lowland forest and peat-swamp catchments in Kalimantan.
