Rasbora pycnopeza is a small freshwater cyprinid described in 2018 from the Brantian drainage of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo — one of a steady stream of new Rasbora species that have emerged from targeted ichthyological surveys of the island's highland and foothill stream systems. Discovered and formally named in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, it remains poorly known in the hobby and has not yet been assessed by the IUCN, a common situation for recently described, narrow-range species from Borneo's interior watersheds.

Taxonomy & naming

Rasbora pycnopeza was described by Wilkinson and Tan in 2018, in a paper devoted to the fishes of the Brantian drainage in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (volume 66, pp. 595–609). The species is placed in the family Cyprinidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination; the name stands in Rasbora as described.

The genus Rasbora has undergone considerable revision over the past three decades. Several genera were carved out of it — among them Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia and Rasboroides — while others (Trigonostigma, Microrasbora) were erected or reinstated nearby. The Bornean Rasboras represent a diverse radiation of small schooling cyprinids occupying the island's river systems from the coastal lowlands to the montane foothills. No common name has been established in the aquarium trade or scientific literature for R. pycnopeza.

Morphology

No detailed morphological description is available from the sources gathered for this article beyond that the species belongs to the genus Rasbora, family Cyprinidae, and was recognised as distinct from other Bornean congeners in the Brantian drainage. As with most members of the genus, it is presumed to be a small, laterally compressed, schooling cyprinid with the slender build typical of rheophilic or stream-dwelling rasboras.

Habitat

The type locality of Rasbora pycnopeza is the Brantian drainage in Sabah, in the Malaysian portion of northern Borneo. The Brantian system drains interior hill and foothill terrain before reaching the coast, and is characteristic of Sabah's smaller river networks — typically clear to lightly turbid, relatively fast-flowing hill streams over gravel or sand substrates, shaded by riparian forest.

No specific physico-chemical data for the species' exact collection sites were recovered in the sources consulted. General conditions in Sabah's interior stream habitats run soft and mildly acidic, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius. The Brantian drainage has not been subjected to the same level of peat-swamp drainage and large-scale agriculture affecting lowland systems in Sarawak and Kalimantan, though logging pressure in Sabah's forested catchments is a continuing concern.

Feeding

Mating

Rasbora pycnopeza has not been bred in captivity in any account available to the sources gathered here. Like other members of the genus Rasbora, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond, nest, or form of parental care is attributed to any member of this genus.

In stream-dwelling Bornean rasboras, spawning is likely triggered by shifts in water level and temperature associated with rainfall cycles. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously. The adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs are left to develop without parental attention.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Rasbora pycnopeza have been documented. On the basis of Rasbora biology generally, breeding in captivity would follow the standard egg-scattering approach: a separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops over a mesh or marbles, conditioning the adults on live and frozen foods, and a partial water change with slightly cooler water to simulate seasonal rainfall.

Adults should be removed after spawning, as eggs and newly hatched larvae would otherwise be eaten. Fry care would parallel that of other small rasboras — infusoria and paramecia initially, transitioning to nauplii as the fish grow. Given the species' narrow known range and its recent description, it is unlikely to be in commercial breeding programmes at present.

In the aquarium

Rasbora pycnopeza is not established in the aquarium trade and is unlikely to be available through standard retail channels. As a recently described species from a restricted locality in interior Sabah, specimens would only be encountered through specialist collectors or targeted field collection, and export for the hobby has not been reported.

Should it become available, husbandry would follow that of other small, hill-stream Bornean rasboras: a well-filtered tank with moderate current, soft and mildly acidic water, subdued lighting with planting, and a peaceful community of similarly sized species. A shoal of at least six to eight individuals would be the minimum to observe natural behaviour. Water quality and temperature stability are more important than precise chemistry for a fish adapted to the relatively stable microhabitats of forested hill streams.

Conservation

Rasbora pycnopeza has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — a situation typical for species described as recently as 2018, which have not yet been reviewed in any global or regional conservation evaluation. Its known range is restricted to the Brantian drainage of Sabah, making it potentially vulnerable to localised habitat disturbance.

Sabah's forested interior catchments face pressure from commercial logging, plantation expansion (particularly oil palm), and associated sedimentation and water-quality degradation. Narrow-range endemics in such systems can decline quickly if riparian forest cover is lost. Formal assessment and monitoring of the Brantian drainage fish fauna would be a meaningful step in understanding the conservation needs of this and other species described from the same survey.
