Taxonomy & naming
Rasbora johannae was formally described by D.J. Siebert and M.D. Guiry in 1996, and is placed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the governing authority for valid names) within the genus Rasbora. The species was described as part of the Rasbora trifasciata species complex, a grouping of striped Bornean rasboras that share a broadly similar body plan and were historically lumped under earlier names before revisionary work separated them.
The genus Rasbora has undergone extensive revision since the 1990s, with numerous Southeast Asian species carved into new genera — Boraras, Trigonopoma, Brevibora, Kottelatia, Rasboroides and others — but Rasbora johannae remains in the core genus as currently constituted. Hobbyists and the scientific literature should be aware that Bornean rasboras are an active area of taxonomic revision and synonymies or transfers remain possible as molecular and morphological work continues.
Morphology
Rasbora johannae is a small, slender-bodied cyprinid with a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.5 in. Like other members of the trifasciata complex it carries the lateral-stripe pattern characteristic of its group: a dark horizontal band running along the flank against a pale or silvery background, the precise expression of which is one of the characters used to separate complex members from one another.
Detailed morphometric data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. As a Bornean hill-stream rasbora it almost certainly has a streamlined build suited to moderate current, with a relatively small upturned or terminal mouth. Precise counts of fin rays, lateral-line scales and other meristic characters are recorded in the original 1996 description; these remain the definitive reference for distinguishing this species from close relatives.
Habitat
Rasbora johannae is endemic to Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of Borneo. FishBase records its habitat as small, high-gradient forest streams with gravel-to-cobble substrates and very little or no emergent aquatic vegetation — the clean, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing headwaters typical of undisturbed Bornean hill forest.
Such streams typically carry soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water stained lightly with tannins from leaf litter and decomposing organic matter, though gradient streams over rock and gravel tend to be cleaner and clearer than the blackwater peat-swamp drainages of the lowlands. Water temperatures in Bornean hill streams are moderately warm throughout the year, reflecting the equatorial climate, with seasonal variation driven by rainfall rather than temperature swings. Specific pH and temperature data for this species have not been formally published.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Rasbora johannae has been published. By analogy with other small Bornean Rasbora species of comparable size and habitat it is almost certainly a micropredator and opportunistic omnivore, feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, surface-fallen terrestrial insects, small crustaceans and zooplankton — supplemented by algae, biofilm and fine organic matter.
In the aquarium, small rasboras of this type accept standard micropredator rations: quality micro-pellets or crushed flake as a staple, with live or frozen daphnia, cyclops and freshly hatched brine shrimp to maintain condition. Because the species is infrequently kept, feeding observations in captivity are scarce in the hobbyist literature.
Mating
Rasbora johannae has not been bred in captivity with any regularity, and no published account of its spawning behaviour exists. As a member of the genus Rasbora it is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner following the pattern universal to the genus: no nest is built, no pair bond is formed, and there is no parental care of any kind.
In related Rasbora species, a conditioned male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or along the stream bottom, pressing close alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The eggs — small, slightly adhesive — fall among the substrate or plant stems and are abandoned immediately. Adults do not guard, fan, or attend the eggs and will eat them given opportunity.
Breeding
No detailed captive-breeding account for Rasbora johannae has been published in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. Aquarists wishing to attempt breeding can apply the general approach used for small Bornean Rasbora species: a shallow, darkened tank with a fine-leaved or mossy substrate layer (java moss, spawning mops or a fine mesh) to catch falling eggs away from the adults, soft and slightly acidic water reflecting the hill-stream chemistry of Kalimantan, and well-conditioned adults brought into spawning condition on a varied diet of live and frozen foods.
Eggs would be expected to hatch within one to three days at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later and accepting infusoria, green-water or paramecia initially, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the species' rarity in the trade, any successful captive breeding would be of genuine interest to both hobbyists and the scientific community.
In the aquarium
Rasbora johannae is very rarely available in the aquarium trade and is essentially unknown as a hobby fish. Its small size (under 1.5 in) and presumed shoaling behaviour would make it a candidate for a quiet, species or biotope aquarium styled around a Bornean hill-stream environment: moderate current, a substrate of smooth pebbles and fine gravel, scattered leaf litter and perhaps a few clumps of moss or fine-leaved plants, with subdued lighting.
Water quality should prioritise softness, moderate acidity and high oxygen content in line with its hill-stream origins. It would be best kept as a group of six or more individuals, as small rasboras are social and are more settled and confident in a school. Given its scarcity, any hobbyist acquiring the species should treat captive maintenance as a conservation gesture and document their observations, including any breeding attempts, for the wider community.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Rasbora johannae as Least Concern (LC), with the most recent assessment placing it in that category as of 2019 (FishBase) or the 2022.2 assessment cycle. Despite the LC designation, the species' endemic Bornean range and reliance on intact forest-stream habitat make it worth monitoring: Kalimantan has experienced some of the highest rates of tropical deforestation and land conversion in Southeast Asia, driven by palm oil expansion, mining and infrastructure, and the clear, gravel-bottomed hill streams this fish occupies are sensitive to sedimentation and pollution from catchment disturbance.
The species is not commercially exploited for the aquarium trade at any meaningful scale, and its status rests on the assumption that sufficiently intact hill-stream habitat persists across its range. Continued forest clearance in the Bornean interior could shift that assessment in future Red List cycles.
